David Letterman drives Parnelli Jones 1963 Indy winner
When David Letterman slid out from behind his modernist, L-shaped desk for the final time on May 20, passing the keys to the Ed Sullivan Theater to Stephen Colbert, one might have expected him to take it easy. After 33 years as a television fixture, he'd earned a break writes Dan Carney of Maxim Magazine.

But here he is, not two months later, pulling on a crimson fireproof racing suit, slipping a helmet over his head, and preparing to insert his lanky frame into the cockpit of a cantankerous 1963 Watson roadster in the breezy number-two garage at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Rosberg's hat-trick hopes dealt a blow
Awe-shucks
(GMM)  Nico Rosberg's chances of securing a winning hat-trick have taken a blow even before a wheel turns in Abu Dhabi.

Auto Motor und Sport reports that Mercedes has withdrawn from circulation his winning 'power unit' from Brazil, after a water leak was discovered.

It means he will tackle the entire Abu Dhabi race weekend with a single engine, where usually a fresher 'race' unit is installed after Friday practice.

"I've had two really great weekends in Mexico and Brazil," he said, "so I have good momentum behind me right now and I'm heading into the final race on a massive high."

Ecclestone upbeat over Monza F1 future
Yup, they coughed up the money so Monza will still have a race.
(GMM)  Bernie Ecclestone is now sounding more confident about the future of the historic Italian grand prix.

Earlier, the Monza race seemed endangered for financial reasons, as the F1 supremo warned: "I hope we don't lose it but I think there is a good chance we will."

But Ecclestone has now told Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport: "We will find the right solution -- I no longer have doubts about a future for the Italian grand prix.

"Things have been clarified," the 85-year-old Briton added in an interview with the well-known correspondent Pino Allievi.  "There is only one go-between now, (automobile club chief Angelo) Sticci Damiani."

At the tender age of 9, Briton Hamilton approached the McLaren supremo and announced: "I'm Lewis Hamilton and one day I want to drive for you."

Dennis, still the group chairman at the Woking team, duly backed the youngster throughout his formative career, bringing him into F1 and powering his first title in 2008.

After that, it was not all plain sailing.

F1 decline in Germany 'strange' - Rosberg
Rosberg doesn't understand why Germans don't want to watch two teammates put on a parade in non-screaming F1 cars.
(GMM)  Nico Rosberg admits the decline of interest in Germany is "strange".

Mercedes is dominating, German Rosberg is a winning frontrunner and fabled Ferrari is led from the cockpit by the quadruple world champion Sebastian Vettel.

And yet German race promoters are struggling to fill grandstands and pay the fees to Bernie Ecclestone, with the country having to sit out the 2015 calendar altogether.

"It was disappointing to lose the grand prix this year, but next year it will be back," Rosberg told the Spanish sports daily Marca.

Belardi Auto Racing Confirms Veach for Indy Lights Seat
Zach Veach
Belardi Auto Racing is thrilled to confirm driver Zach Veach for the 2016 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires championship.  Veteran Mazda Road to Indy driver and three-time Indy Lights race winner Veach will be back behind the wheel this coming season, as Belardi has confirmed that the Indianapolis, IN driver will begin the season in one of their Dallara IL-15 race cars. Veach spent two years in the top level of the MRTI ladder system, winning three times as a sophomore in 2014 as he battled Gabby Chaves and Jack Harvey every weekend for the championship. Veach and his management team worked tirelessly last winter to step up to IndyCar in 2015, but when they were not able to put together a program, Veach remained trackside every weekend working with the IndyCar Radio Network as a driver analyst for IndyCar and Indy Lights events. The team will continue their efforts to fully fund this Indy Lights program, as well as other potential rides next year, but the effort with Belardi is their primary focus for 2016.

Kyle Busch - NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion - with his family
Navigating through negative comments from detractors on social media is often a tough road. For Samantha Busch, criticism has been a much more personal topic of late, one that brings emotional timbres to her voice.

Busch missed the first 11 races of the year as he recovered, returning to competition in mid-May with an exemption from NASCAR officials that kept him eligible for the title.

Formula E Won't Add Second U.S. Race
What pipe is Alejandro Agag smoking? Real Race fans are not going to pay to watch silent race cars. If it's free they will show up

Formula E has no plans to add a second U.S. race to its calendar for the third season, according to the series' CEO. The racing series' sole U.S. stop during the '15-16 season will be Long Beach, Calif., on April 2. Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag told SBD Global the series is currently focused on other markets.

"I don't see another [race] coming to the U.S. in season three," he said. "Maybe season four."

The electric racing series, which has already announced Hong Kong as a new addition for its third season, is looking at cities in Australia, Asia and Europe. At the top of the list is Tokyo, with Agag saying the series is having "very positive conversations" with the Japanese capital at the moment. While Formula E has no imminent plans to expand its presence in the U.S., the market remains a priority for the series' organizers.

Manufacturers reject 'client engine' proposal (Of course they would) UPDATE

The governing body's position is expected to become clearer later today. We expect Bernie Ecclestone or Jean Todt will speak out and force something down the existing manufacturers' throats. Why?

Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz spoke to Red Bull-owned Speedweek, and said he still has no concrete plan for an engine supply deal to either of his teams, neither Red Bull Racing nor Toro Rosso.

When asked if either or both will be in F1 next year, he replied: "I cannot give a definite answer to that question because we still don’t know if we will get an engine and what else is planned for the future.

Young American Sage Karam is no longer under contract with Chip Ganassi Racing reports racer.com.

"The team allowed his option to expire, and they are still very high on Sage, but the opportunities for the team are unknown and the budget for the 8 car is also unknown, so they didn't want to keep him bound with nothing to offer," said Mickey Ryan, who also managed Dario Franchitti and Dan Wheldon.

As IndyCar contracts because of the low TV ratings from NBCSN teams and drivers are unable to find sponsors so there is a good chance Karam will not have a ride next year.

Additional Car Tethers among Verizon IndyCar Series Safety Enhancements for 2016
IndyCar puts a Band-Aid on a gaping wound.
Tethering aerodynamic components of the Dallara IR-12 chassis is among safety enhancements announced by INDYCAR that will be implemented for the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season.

The high-tensile Zylon tethers minimize the possibility of components becoming detached from the race cars during accidents.

The rear beam wing and rear wheel guards will be tethered for all Verizon IndyCar Series events and the car's nose will be tethered on superspeedway ovals (1.5 miles or longer). Dallara also has designed a tethering system for the front wing main plane for the three superspeedways on the 2016 schedule - Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway.

Larson Planning Winter Dirt Return
Kyle Larson willing to put his NASCAR career at risk with a Sprint Car injury like Tony Stewart suffered
Kyle Larson confirmed that he will contest a schedule similar to the one he ran last winter, beginning with the 75th annual Turkey Night Grand Prix midget race Nov. 26 at Perris Auto Speedway. Larson also plans to race his winged sprint car during the early January Winter Heat Sprint Car Showdown at Cocopah Speedway in Arizona before turning his attention to the Jan. 12-16 Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. "As soon as our season is done I'll go to Perris to do the Turkey Night," Larson confirmed while at Phoenix Int'l Raceway over the weekend.

"I'll do the first three nights at Cocopah Speedway and then I'll do the Chili Bowl. So that'll be my open-wheel schedule for the offseason." Larson's focus the last few years has been on his career in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, so he hasn't done nearly as much open-wheel racing as he did while climbing the racing ladder. He said in the future he hopes to do more open-wheel racing when his schedule allows, but he said he needs permission from his team owner Chip Ganassi in order to do that. "I'd like to (run more open-wheel races), but I just don't know about that. I'd have to get permission," Larson said. National Speed Sport News

VW Will Not Cancel Its Uber-Expensive Motorsports Programs (yet)
Except for LeMans, Porsche and Audi will continue their dominance in front of the empty grandstands at most WEC races. The justification? An engineering exercise
In the aftermath of Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal, new VW CEO Matthias Muller has finally answered the biggest and most concerning question looming over the German brand's various global motorsports programs with VW, Audi, and Porsche.

Muller spoke last weekend in Bahrain at the FIA World Endurance Championship season finale, and according to former Porsche CEO, its major racing programs will not be axed.

"The motorsports programs are not in danger of being dropped or significantly reduced because motorsports is very important for the group and the brands," Muller was quoted by Autosport. "Basically, we do not question our motorsport efforts."

U.S. Lifeline To Rescue Ford's V8 Supercars Future After Ford Australia Cuts Ties To Series
The Ford teams in V8 Supercars racing are "hoping a lifeline" from the U.S. will "keep them tied to the blue oval brand after the end of the Falcon," according to Paul Gover of the Sydney DAILY TELEGRAPH. It "could even mean the return of the Mustang to frontline Australian motorsport."

Ford Australia is "cutting all ties to motorsport as it prepares to close its factory" in Broadmeadows in '16, "even taking back the Falcon road cars it traditionally loans to the Prodrive and DJR-Penske teams." It ended an estimated A$2M-a-year support of Prodrive at the end of last year, which "meant the Ford Performance Racing name disappeared from the V8 Supercars grid."

The Top Speed Trap States
Waunakee, WI (MMD Newswire) -- When it comes to embracing transparency, no government enterprise fails more miserably than traffic enforcement. Police departments and municipalities resist disclosing the number of tickets they issue for fear of branding their communities as speed traps. And local courts routinely reduce speeding charges to non-moving violations to avoid sharing ticket revenue with the state.

Left unchecked, so-called "Policing for Profit" can have disastrous consequences, as it did in Ferguson, Missouri, last year.

Hinchcliffe Can’t Wait For The 2016 IndyCar Season
James Hinchcliffe
Looking fit and healthy James Hinchcliffe traveled to the Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend to soak up the sunshine, to see Jeff Gordon’s last race, to renew business acquaintances and to enjoy the life of a fan. And another motive was to talk to an Xfinity Series owner or two about a road course ride next summer, even though he’s never driven a stock car. “I really want to do a road course race in an Infinity car next year,” he said. “For me, Watkins Glen would be an awesome one, as it is so close to Canada.”

Hinchcliffe says he is fully recovered from his frightening accident at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway six months ago. In that high-speed practice crash, the affable Canadian had a suspension piece pierce his left thigh and fracture his pelvis. While seriously injured and hospitalized for an extended period, the results could have been much worse if not for the quick and professional action of the Holmatro Safety team, who basically saved his life.

Montoya Tops Bahrain Rookie Test
Montoya jokes around with Porsche team boss Enzinger
Juan Pablo Montoya didn't waste any time getting up to speed in the Porsche 919 Hybrid, as the Colombian topped the time charts in Sunday's FIA WEC Rookie Test in Bahrain.

The open-wheel and NASCAR ace laid down a 1:40.861 lap time late in the three-hour afternoon session to outpace the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, driven by Richie Stanaway, by 1.273 seconds.

Montoya's time was just over one-second slower than Timo Bernhard's pole-winning lap set on Friday, which saw cooler night-time conditions. Bahrain marked his first laps in the LMP1 contender.

Scotts Miracle-Gro Not Renewing Roush Fenway NASCAR Deal
UPDATE The Ortho brand of Scotts Miracle-Gro will not return as primary sponsor of Greg Biffle's #16 Roush Fenway Racing Ford in 2016, the organization and team confirmed Friday. "We have enjoyed a long-standing and greatly productive working relationship with Ortho and the Scotts' brand," RFR President Steve Newmark said in a statement. "Over the course of the last decade they -- at different times -- have been able to successfully activate various marketing platforms through our partnership. They had great success activating around Greg and the No. 16 team and I think all of us enjoyed the 'What's Buggin' Biffle' promotion. However, their marketing strategy for '16 will take them in a different direction. We would of course welcome working with them again in the future and look forward to that possibility." NASCAR.com
