Matthew Brabham discusses his Formula E debut
Mazda Road to Indy star Matthew Brabham had a difficult Formula E debut in Malaysia
Matthew Brabham received an 11th-hour call up to race for the Andretti Formula E team in Malaysia. Despite only landing in Kuala Lumpur on Friday morning, he was able to start the Putrajaya ePrix from ninth on the grid. In the incident-packed race he came home 13th. Here are his thoughts on the event.

You received a late call-up, how were you able to prepare for not only driving the cars, but also the conditions given the heat and humidity in Malaysia?

"It's been a challenge for sure. It was a last-minute call-up and it took me 14 hours to get to Dubai and then seven hours to Malaysia. When we arrived I didn't have time to walk the track so just went straight out for the Friday evening practice. It's definitely a tough track to learn as well. It was a lot more challenging than Beijing and it was a lot more fun as well. I enjoyed it, but it was definitely tough. When I first went out in that first session I didn't really know what way some of the corners went, but once I'd figured it out it was alright."

GP3: Tuscher quickest on day two in Yas Marina
Swiss driver Matheo Tuscher posted the best lap time on day two of post-season testing at the Yas Marina Circuit with a 1:55.583. Italian driver Luca Ghiotto clocked the fastest time of the morning session with a 1:55.976.

The second day of post-season testing at the Yas Marina Circuit again got underway with beautiful sunshine and a light breeze as the drivers exited the pitlane, some of which had switched teams and some making their maiden appearance in a GP3 car.

Jenzer Motorsport’s Matheo Tuscher was first to set the pace in the 1m57's, but there was an early red flag when Colombian driver Tatiana Calderon went off at the Armco at turn two. Trident’s Ghiotto led the way once the session resumed before Ferrari Academy driver Antonio Fuoco who had switched to Carlin for day two – flew to the top of the standings, the first driver to dip into the 1m56's.

Don't underestimate Honda's technological muscle
Honda thinks it can beat Mercedes.  Too funny.  They could not even keep the car running over 2 days in Abu Dhabi.  Mercedes never had a disaster like that from Day 1.
Honda F1 boss Yasuhisa Arai has warned his rivals that his company has been conducting extensive research into turbo and hybrid engines ahead of its return to the grid with McLaren next year.

Honda was lured back to the sport by F1's new power unit regulations six years after it sold its F1 operation to Ross Brawn at the end of 2008. The latest generation of V6 turbo engines and energy recovery systems use very different technology to Honda's previous F1 engines, but Arai says his company has conducted extensive research in those areas since it was last in F1.

Illegal Red Bull wings were a "silly mistake" says Marko
Helmut Marko
Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko insists that the illegal front wing flaps on the RB10s in Abu Dhabi were the result of a "naïve" interpretation of the rules.

Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel qualified fifth and sixth but ultimately started from the pitlane after the FIA discovered a spring arrangement that allowed the flaps to flex.

"It was a silly mistake from our side," Marko told this writer. "I would say it was a naïve interpretation of the regulations. We thought it was within the regulations."

Meanwhile Marko said he was happy with the progress the team made in 2014 after its disastrous start in testing.

Canadian IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe readies for new challenge
Hinchcliffe with his girlfriend Kirsten
Canadian IndyCar racer James Hinchcliffe drives really fast for a living, so he must like taking risks.

After three years with Andretti Autosport, the personable Canuck will be changing wheels for the upcoming season to upstart Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, co-owned by Calgary resident Ric Peterson.

Hinchcliffe was in town Thursday to talk about the new multi-year deal he's inked with a team that's just finished its third year of racing in the Verizon IndyCar Series.

"The timing was just right," Hinchcliffe said of his decision to pursue other racing avenues. "My contract was up and they had a contract available at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, and Ric has always wanted a Canadian driver in the car. For me, as the only Canadian driver, to be able to connect with the only Canadian team owner, is a really cool feeling."

Video: Sebastian Vettel driving Ferrari F12 at 210 mph on public highway (Update) UPDATE (GMM)  Sebastian Vettel's press office has denied claims the German driver reached mind-numbing speeds on the public roads of Abu Dhabi last week.

A video is doing the rounds on Youtube apparently depicting Vettel, who is switching from Red Bull to Ferrari next year, reaching a top speed of 350kph on an Abu Dhabi highway at the wheel of a F12 Berlinetta.

Bild newspaper said the claims have been repeated by Matthias Malmedie, a motoring presenter for the German broadcaster RTL2.

But Vettel's press office rejected the claims, insisting the driver of the car was "explicitly not" the quadruple world champion.

Steve O'Donnell addresses NASCAR questions
Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's executive vice president and chief racing development officer, held an impromptu fan question-and-answer session Tuesday on Twitter while waiting for his flight to take off. Here are some of the best nuggets from his replies to fan tweets:

- This season, teams found it was legal for crew members to yank the side skirts just in front of the rear wheels during pit stops, which created an odd image during races (it provided an aerodynamic benefit). But NASCAR plans to address the flared side skirts with a rule change next season, O'Donnell tweeted.

- One fan asked O'Donnell if he could change the Chase for the Sprint Cup format back to how it was from 2004-2013 (officials have said they view the new format as a major plus for the sport).

"No, but thanks for asking," O'Donnell tweeted, including the surprised smiley face emoji.

Steve Byrnes diagnosed with cancer (Update) UPDATE Fox Sports' Steve Byrnes, who has been on leave from the network while battling Stage 4 head-and-neck cancer, tweeted Wednesday evening, "My Oncologist just called and said my PET scan showed 'progress.' Thanks for your prayers, and Happy Thanksgiving. Grateful!"

10/09/14 For many years now Steve Byrnes has been a major staple in the world of NASCAR themed television. His knowledge of the sport, combined with his sense of humor, has endeared him with the fans beginning with the SPEED Channel and continuing with his current presence as an analyst with Fox Sports 1.

That's why it was so sad to learn that Byrnes is, once again, dealing with the serious issue of cancer. The details were recently released via a press release from Fox Sports which stated:

"Steve Byrnes' cancer has returned: Longtime NASCAR on FOX on-air personality Steve Byrnes is taking an indefinite medical leave of absence, effectively immediately, to focus on his health after receiving news he has suffered a recurrence of cancer"

GP3: Ceccon fastest on day one of post-season testing
Italian ace Kevin Ceccon posted the quickest laptime of the day: a 1:55.501 set in the morning. French rookie Andrea Pizzitola topped the times in the afternoon session with a 1:55.832, narrowly beating Mitch Gilbert in the Arden International car.

The morning test session opened up in glorious conditions at the Yas Marina Circuit for day one of post-season testing. There were plenty of new faces and many drivers testing a GP3 car for the very first time as the pitlane was frenetic with activity with everyone keen to get on track.

Frenchman Pizzitola was fast out the doors for ART Grand Prix with Carlin’s Ed Jones in second and Ferrari Academy driver Antonio Fuoco in third. Jenzer Motorsport’s Kevin Ceccon went P1, but Pizzitola lapped a tenth quicker to re-take his place at the head of the timings.

GP2: Pierre Gasly tops Day 1 at Yas Marina
The 2014 GP2 Series post-season testing opened today at Yas Marina Circuit for three days with many new faces joining some more familiar ones. Each team have been provided with seven sets of Medium Pirelli tires for the three days.

When the track went live, Arthur Pic (who has already been confirmed with Campos Racing for the 2015 season) took to the track and set the early pace to top the timesheet just as a first red flag stopped the proceedings: F3 European Champion Esteban Ocon had stopped his DAMS car at Turn 11. At the re-start, 2014 GP2 Vice Champion Stoffel Vandoorne became the first man to dip under 1m50s: the ART man went top with a laptime of 1:49.445, half a second quicker than Pic. A second red flag halted the proceedings briefly when Zoel Amberg stopped his Trident car.

IndyCar team looking for ride-buyer with big check
Mikhail Aleshin's absence in 2015 because his check won't clear will create a new two-driver lineup for the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports IndyCar team.  They will test 2012 GP2 Series champion Davide Valsecchi, an Italian, at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway on Dec. 16. He will test alongside recent signee James Hinchcliffe.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports previously tested Indy Lights champion Gabby Chaves, Rodolfo Gonzalez and Rocky Moran Jr. on the road course at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Schmidt said the team's second driver must have ties to funding i.e. he must buy his ride.

"We're not going to be able to fund it internally," he said. "The driver must have full or at least partial (funding)."

Mikhail Aleshin's IndyCar return unlikely due to Obama sanctions
Aleshin's IndyCar career is over because his check won't clear as the open wheel ride-buying cancer that is destroying the sport continues unabated
Continued U.S. sanctions against supporters of Russian president Vladimir Putin apparently will cost an impressive Verizon IndyCar Series driver a chance to race in this country another season.

Sam Schmidt, a co-owner of Indianapolis-based Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, told The Star this week that Mikhail Aleshin's financial contributions to the race team are not only behind, they're frozen.

"There's a clear road block in terms of the transfer of money," Schmidt said. "We can't seem to get any."

The U.S. government placed sanctions on SMP Bank, along with other Russian institutions connected to Putin, beginning last spring amid tensions in Ukraine.

Ferrari spin-off to reduce Fiat Chrysler debt by $894 million
(Reuters) -- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles expects its net industrial debt to drop by about $894 million (715 million euros) thanks to a planned Ferrari spin-off, a regulatory filing showed on Wednesday.

FCA had already said in a separate filing with U.S. market regulator SEC earlier this month that it would receive 2.25 billion euros from Ferrari before it spins off the luxury sportscar unit from the group next year.

The company added on Wednesday that this payment and the removal of Ferrari's own debt of 133 million euros from the parent group's accounts would be offset by the loss of Ferrari's cash and receivables worth 1.67 billion euros.

Kurt Busch gets delay on protection hearing
A Delaware family court commissioner has granted NASCAR driver Kurt Busch's request to delay a hearing on a protection from abuse petition filed by his ex-girlfriend. Busch's attorney asked for the delay in court papers filed last Friday, saying Busch is participating in a race car rally in Italy and that his return flight is Dec. 2, the same day as the scheduled hearing.

The postponement was granted over the objections of an attorney for Patricia Driscoll, who said Driscoll wants a no-contact order entered as soon as possible. The new hearing date is Dec. 16. The family court matter is separate from an ongoing criminal investigation by Dover police into Driscoll's allegations that Busch assaulted her inside his motorhome at Dover International Speedway in September.  Associated Press

Abu Dhabi test: Even a rookie can dominate in the superior Mercedes F1 car
It is so superior, even your grandmother could win in the Mercedes F1 car
Proving that even a grandmother could probably win in the Mercedes F1 car, reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein set the pace on the final day of F1 testing for 2014 in Abu Dhabi a good 1/2-second faster than all the other pretenders.

Meanwhile Honda is learning just how ridiculously over complicated the new F1 engine technology is.  The McLaren-Honda's development car spent most of Tuesday and Wednesday in the garage as the Woking team and its Japanese engine partner fixed a new electrical problem on the car.

McLaren test driver Stoffel Vandoorne did venture out late in the afternoon, but the McLaren soon came back to the pits on a truck, having completed an installation lap before hitting trouble on lap two. It was egg on the face for the Japanese.

Stick a fork in Mustang tuner Saleen - it's done
Saleen Automotive, creator of crazy Mustangs and the gorgeous Saleen S7 supercar, is in a bad way. According to its own quarterly earnings report the company is getting sued by its bank, it owes its law firm money, it's resorted to paying contractors in stock, it's looking for a buyer, and, as of September 30th, 2014, it only has $7,261 in cash left.

$7,261 is not enough to run a car company.

The company's most recent quarterly earnings report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, or Form 10-Q, is horrific. But the nature of it can only hint at what potentially lies beneath the surface for Saleen.

It's full of painful admissions and sad disclosures, like the one admitting that it might not be around much longer if it doesn't find a buyer, and another saying that it has failed to pay back its bank loans.

The goal in recent years has been to demonstrate what GoDaddy can do for small businesses, not necessarily to generate controversy, GoDaddy CMO Barb Rechterman told "USA Today."

Di Grassi: I had a much better race than in Beijing
Lucas di Grassi sits atop the Formula E driver standings
Lucas di Grassi believes his drive from the back of the grid to a podium finish in the Putrajaya ePrix felt better than winning the opening Formula E race in Beijing.

The Brazilian, driving for Audi Sport ABT, lined-up 18th for the start of round two after clipping the wall in qualifying yet he was able to carve his way through the field during the 31-lap action-packed race and maintain his lead in the drivers’ standings.

“I felt I had a much better race than in Beijing where I won,” said di Grassi. “For sure this was beyond my expectations. Everyone is here to win, everyone is pushing to the limit as this track has proven once and for all this car is very tricky to drive even if you have done all the testing. The tiniest margin can ruin your whole weekend and that’s what happened in qualifying from my side and then to come all the way from the back of the grid on a street track to second is an amazing feeling.”

Ecclestone: I said children, not youth
What? Can't you hear right
Bernie Ecclestone claims he was misquoted over recent comments about the sport's target audience.

Not for the first time, the F1 supremo opened his mouth and the reverberations were felt throughout the sport... and beyond.

In a recent interview with Campaign Asia-Pacific, Ecclestone, when asked about who the sport is targeting, he replied: "If you have a brand that you want to put in front of a few hundred million people, I can do that easily for you on television. Agag: Putrajaya ePrix was world-class
Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag talks about the success of this weekend's Putrajaya ePrix
Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag believes the Putrajaya ePrix was a spectacular event that took the championship to new heights.

“When you start well the important thing is to always try to do even better,” he said. “This was our goal ahead of Putrajaya, after our debut in Beijing, and I think we can say we have achieved this.

“The race was spectacular, full of overtaking and emotions, thanks to a really nice track. I think the audience on track and all those who followed the race on television had a great time. Even more satisfied are all the fans who voted for Bruno Senna in FanBoost: thanks to them the driver could exploit extra 40bhp boost to make a beautiful overtake on Nico Prost. This is the first time fans can really interact with a sport and become protagonists!
