Kanaan, who won the 2013 Indianapolis 500, is an avid biker and recently completed the Ironman 70.3 triathlon – also in Miami - with teammate and reigning IndyCar champion Scott Dixon.

Kanaan is not expected to miss any time in the car. He was a member of Ganassi’s Rolex 24 winning team this season and is expected to be in the mix to compete again at the event in January.

Stoffel Vandoorne tops final F1 test of 2015 for Pirelli
Pirelli brought several versions of its Ultra-Soft tires to test, so we do not know who had the softest version, but it was interesting to see McLaren, at the hands of GP2 ace Stoffel Vandoorne, at the top of the timesheets. Maybe Fernando Alonso should take that sabbatical. Vandoorne might be faster at 1/10th the salary.

NHRA Making Changes To Comp Eliminator
GLENDORA, Calif. -- Bolstering its initiative to increase sportsman participation, NHRA is announcing changes for Competition Eliminator beginning in 2016.

Changes are being made to the Competition Index Control system that was originally introduced in the eliminator in 1990.

"Competition Eliminator is truly one of the most unique categories, in that it offers all out racing between a wide variety of classes of vehicles and engine combinations," said Josh Peterson, vice president, racing administration.  "We want more competitors to participate in this category.  The Competition Index Control system has undergone several changes over the years, yet is the best means to maintain parity between the 100 different class combinations.  We think these adjustments to the CIC system will increase participation and improve competition in the class."

Denny Hamlin undergoes successful knee surgery
Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 FedEx Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, had successful surgery on his right knee yesterday.

Hamlin, who tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament while playing basketball in early September, is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of the 2016 NASCAR season in February at Daytona International Speedway.

The surgery was previously scheduled and was done by OrthoCarolina's Dr. Patrick Connor. The injury did not force Hamlin to miss time, and he finished ninth overall in this year's Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Team officials say Hamlin’s status for this week’s Champion’s Week festivities is uncertain at this time.

Vettel confident Ferrari can beat Mercedes in 2016
Sebastian Vettel wants to be #1 again
After two seasons dominated by Mercedes, Sebastian Vettel is the only driver aside from Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to win races, claiming three in his first year with Ferrari.

Next year, though, the former Red Bull driver believes he can add more to his tally as Ferrari are "fired up" to challenge Mercedes.

"I think it has been an upward curve all year long," he told Sky Sports F1.

"If you consider where we were in winter testing – probably something like 1.5s [per lap] behind – and now after a grand prix distance something 10 to 15 seconds behind, I think we are definitely doing the right things.

"We know that there's an awful lot to do. We know that Mercedes is very strong – not just the car, not just the engine, not just the drivers - it's the package.

SHR announces new crew chiefs for Stewart, Patrick
Will new crew chiefs turn these two backmarkers into winners in 2016?
Will new crew chiefs turn these two backmarkers into winners in 2016?
Stewart-Haas Racing has made new appointments within its competition department as the championship-winning race team wastes no time preparing for the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

Michael Bugarewicz has been promoted from race engineer on the #4 team to crew chief for the #14 team of Tony Stewart. The 33-year-old from Lehighton, Pennsylvania, replaces Chad Johnston, who has left SHR to pursue a new opportunity. Bugarewicz joined SHR in 2014 where in his role as race engineer, he helped Kevin Harvick secure his first Sprint Cup championship. Bugarewicz began his NASCAR career in 2005 at Roush-Fenway Racing in the engineering department, assisting a variety of teams as a race engineer in the Camping World Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Sprint Cup Series. Before coming to SHR, Bugarewicz was the race engineer on Roush-Fenway's No. 17 team, where he worked with Matt Kenseth (2011-2012) and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (2013). Bugarewicz graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering (2004) and a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering (2005).

Insanity reigns in motorsports today
In the immortal words of Vince Lombardi, what the hell is going on out there writes Peter DeLorenzo of Autoextremist? First, there's the ongoing intransigence in F1. Bernie Ecclestone's stranglehold on the sport has led it down the primrose path to irrelevance. The races are boring, the technology exists for technology's sake and nothing else, and the sanitized, pasteurized and regimented "show" is as exciting as watching paint dry. Lewis Hamilton, the newly crowned 2015 World Champion, visited NASCAR's last race at Homestead-Miami Speedway and admitted that F1 could learn a lot from NASCAR in the way the races are presented. And his view is shared by many, including former World Champion and current McLaren-Honda pilot Fernando Alonso, who admitted after the last F1 race of the season in Abu Dhabi that the WEC and MotoGP races were "more fun."

F1 is 99.99% car (Update) UPDATE A reader adds, Dear Ar1.com, It was plain to see for anyone who watched the race that the Mercedes Benz strategy was to hand the win to Rosberg.  By keeping Hamilton out way too long on the second set of tires, then pitting him very late in the race, and putting on the slower choice of tires, they gave him no chance of beating Rosberg.  Guess MB does not think Rosberg can beat Hamilton on talent, so they do it for him with intentionally bad race strategy. Bob in Florida

Dear Bob, Yes, in F1 today, the Mercedes team dictates the outcome of the race, not driver talent. Will 2016 be Rosberg's turn to be World Champion? AutoRacing1.com Staff

Even before the race began at Yas Marina, the stewards ruled that the Ferrari-Haas collaboration is above board, after Mercedes queried rules "ambiguities".

But the FIA declared that "there is no evidence that competitors have not complied" with the rules, even though there will be tighter restrictions for new teams like Haas in the future.

VW's easy fix to diesel scandal
Two months into its diesel scandal, Volkswagen says it finally has found a silver-bullet solution.

In receiving the blessing of the KBA, Germany's type approval authority, to clean up hazardous emissions from the 1.6-liter diesel, VW has now resolved the hardest aspect of its massive recall as that specific engine required technical modifications.

Not only does the proposed new component bring the cars into compliance in Europe, VW Group believes the fix will not even impede fuel efficiency or engine output.

GP2: Vandoorne wins again
Stoffel Vandoorne
Stoffel Vandoorne clinched his seventh GP2 win of 2015 in Abu Dhabi, and his 11th in two years to go top of its all-time win list

Stoffel Vandoorne has handed his team the perfect leaving gift by closing out his championship winning season with victory in the final feature race tonight in Abu Dhabi. His seventh win of the year also claimed the record for most wins in a season, to his obvious delight as he celebrated on the podium alongside Raffaele Marciello and Mitch Evans.

The top four drivers chose to start the race on option tires, with Marciello the first man on track on primes in P5: when the lights went out front row starters Pierre Gasly and Vandoorne led the field towards turn one, easily handling the fast charging Evans, but behind them Marciello was very slow to get away and was swamped by his option shod rivals, with Alex Lynn, Rio Haryanto, Alexander Rossi, Jordan King and Norman Nato all blasting by the Italian.
