F1 Summit Called To Give Teams Chance To Focus On Economics
F1 teams "have been called to a summit meeting on Dec. 18 in a bid for a breakthrough in the sport's costs crisis," according to AUTOSPORT. Lotus, Sauber and Force India "have been pushing for ways to help their financial situation, with the hike in engine prices this year having hurt all the customer teams." Frustrations about the situation "further increased after last week's F1 Commission gathering when, despite an all-day meeting, the subject of costs did not get debated at length as other issues took precedence before time ran out." The failure to address the costs situation properly has left the FIA and F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone determined not to let the matter slip -- "which is why they have called a fresh meeting for later this month where it is expected to be the main focus." Autosport

AUTOSPORT's Jonathan Noble wrote F1 teams and the FIA "have given the green light for the introduction of the virtual safety car (VSC) in 2015, following successful late-season tests." The "push for a way of better controlling driver speed followed Jules Bianchi's horrific crash at the Japanese Grand Prix." Trials of a virtual safety car system -- "where a speed limit is imposed around the track for incidents that do not require a full safety car -- began in United States GP practice." Autosport

GP3 runner-up Dean Stoneman targets U.S. switch
Dean Stoneman
According to an article on Racer.com, GP3 runner-up and former F2 champion Dean Stoneman is eyeing a seat in Indy Lights or IndyCar.

"My goal now is to continue that momentum and secure a test in America. I feel I'm capable of going straight to IndyCar, but if I need to start in Indy Lights, I'm OK with that route. There's a lot of interest building around both series, and I want to invest myself into a career there."

"I believe I have the talent to start in IndyCar, but with Indy Lights, you can also learn the tracks before moving up, but I'm not the type of personality to go for the easier path or aim low to start," he said.

The 17-race season begins March 8 in Brasilia, Brazil, and the North American opener March 29 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., will mark the competitive debut of distinctly different aerodynamic bodywork kits supplied by Chevrolet and Honda.

Verizon IndyCar Series Releases 2015 Rule Changes
IndyCar eliminates standing starts because the car isn't good enough to do them well
The 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series rulebook was issued to teams this week and changes to the sporting and technical regulations include double points for the 99th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race and the season finale at Sonoma Raceway on Aug. 30.

"The best thing the sanctioning body can provide competitors, manufacturers and fans is a stable, consistent rulebook, so most of the changes for 2015 are clarifying and tidying up definitions," said Derrick Walker, president of competition and operations, INDYCAR. "The rulebook is continuously evolving and we always look to refine it to make the product better."

Spyker Cars has one foot in the grave
Spyker N.V., together with its wholly owned subsidiary Spyker Automobielen B.V. (collectively "Spyker" or the "Company"), today filed a voluntary petition for financial restructuring in an effort to address certain short-term operational and liquidity challenges. The District Court of Midden-Nederland in Lelystad, the Netherlands (the "Court") granted Spyker's voluntary petition for temporary moratorium of payment ("surseance van betaling"), the Dutch equivalent of the American Chapter 11 proceedings, and has appointed an administrator who, together with the Board of Management, bears final responsibility for management of the company as long as the  moratorium of payment status is in force. The Court's ruling to grant a temporary moratorium of payment protects the Company from its creditors throughout the duration of the moratorium. The Company's wholly owned subsidiary Spyker Events & Branding B.V. entered temporary moratorium of payment a month ago.

GM recalling 316,357 more autos - North America total now at 30.4 million
Recall Motors, er...we mean General Motors, is recalling 316,357 more vehicles in North America because their headlights can stop working.

The recall affects the Buick LaCrosse sedan and the Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender SUVs. All of the vehicles are from the 2006 through 2009 model years.

GM says the low-beam headlights or daytime running lamps could intermittently or permanently stop working. If that happens it increases the risk of a crash.

Mercedes celebrates F1 title with special edition SL63s
Lewis Hamilton Edition
Mercedes-Benz is celebrating its triumph in the Formula 1 World Championship with two exquisite special models of the SL 63 AMG - co-created by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Lewis Hamilton, who became the Formula 1 champion for the 2014 season after a series of memorable duels, proposed black as his base color. Nico Rosberg, his fiercest rival in this season's races, chose white as his color theme. Mercedes-Benz is only producing 19 of each model. And each model in the "World Championship 2014 Collector's Edition" is effectively one-of-a-kind: for each individual vehicle is dedicated to one of the 19 Formula 1 race tracks used this year and is unmistakably identifiable as such through some of its equipment and appointment details.

World champion and serial winner: the two Mercedes Formula 1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were first through the checkered flag in 16 out of the 19 Formula 1 races this year, delivering up some thrilling duels in motorsport's elite discipline at the same time, sometimes literally wheel-to-wheel. The prize for this outstanding performance: first and second place in the drivers' championship and undisputed champion of the constructors' championship. To mark these achievements, Mercedes-Benz has dedicated a unique Collector's Edition to each of its two world-beating drivers. The sporting competitiveness on the tarmac which propelled them both to their superlative performances can also be seen in the two very different designs.

France planning to eliminate diesel-powered cars
Looks like those diesel polluting Audis in WEC may soon become a dinosaur
France may be done with diesel. Prime Minister Manuel Valls has announced his intention to eliminate diesel-powered passenger cars from his country's roads, Reuters reports.

It's part of a broader environmental effort that will include the launch next year of a pollution rating system for automobiles, which will facilitate the banning of the dirtiest cars from urban centers.

Approximately 80 percent of cars in France today run on diesel, thanks largely to a tax system that makes the fuel about 15 percent cheaper than gasoline.

Garcia joins China Racing in Uruguay
World-class GT racer Antonio Garcia will race alongside Nelson Piquet Jr. at China Racing for the next Formula E race.

Spaniard Garcia will make his series debut at the Punta del Este ePrix on December 13. He is replacing Ho-Pin Tung, who is unavailable to drive due to a prior commitment.

Garcia, who tested for the team during pre-season at Donington Park, said: “I’m looking forward to my first Formula E race. The track is new for everyone so for me the main challenge is going to be learning the car, in particular managing the battery. Having two races under his belt, Nelson [Piquet] should help me with this, as well as being able to analysis his data from Beijing and Putrajaya to help me get up to speed. During testing at Donington, I felt comfortable in the car and was lapping within the top five, so that’s where we hope to be fighting in Punta del Este. I guess I now need to start promoting myself for FanBoost!"

The Tung/Garcia swap is expected to be the only change to the Formula E driver line-up for round three of the series, which takes place later this month.

New engineer for Raikkonen
Lots of changes on the technical side at Maranello
Kimi Raikkonen is set for a change of race engineer at the Ferrari Formula 1 team next year, with former Marussia chief engineer David Greenwood likely to get the role.

Greenwood has already been recruited by Ferrari following the collapse of Marussia, and made his first appearance with the Maranello team at last week's Abu Dhabi test, although his exact role for 2015 is still being specified. However, Greenwood is likely to replace Antonio Spagnolo as Raikkonen's race engineer. Spagnolo is set for a factory role.

Raikkonen is known to get on well with British engineers, and amid his difficult 2014 campaign, Ferrari called upon David Lloyd mid-season to try to help improve communication between the Finnish driver and his engineers.

Legendary driver, crew chief, innovator Armstrong passes away
Dale Armstrong
Dale Armstrong, whose talents as a driver, tuner, fabricator and innovator rivaled those of drag racing legend "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, died Friday at his home in Temecula, Calif., with his wife, Susie, and their menagerie of rescued dogs and cats by his side. He was 73.

Although he was best known as crew chief to Kenny Bernstein when the Texan won five of his six NHRA championships, Armstrong was much, much more. In fact, he already had completed one successful career before he and Bernstein joined forces in 1982.

Born in Holden, Alberta, Canada, Armstrong developed his mechanical skills modifying hot rods in his family's garage. He started racing in 1957 and, in 1965, moved to Southern California because it provided him an opportunity to race his Chevy II up to five days a week.

Fast facts for this coming weekend's Sydney NRMA 500
1. While Jamie Whincup is champion elect for 2014, the fight for second will be raging at the Sydney NRMA 500 between Mark Winterbottom, Craig Lowndes and Shane van Gisbergen.

Despite often being labeled a regular championship bridesmaid, Ford’s Winterbottom has only finished runner-up once – back in 2008.

However he has been a regular contender and has never finished outside the top five in the final point score since joining Ford Performance Racing in 2006.

Lowndes – third and 95 points behind Winterbottom – is trying to help Red Bull Racing Australia and Triple Eight achieve the historic feat of its fourth 1-2 championship finish in successive years, which has never before been achieved by a team in 55 years of ATCC/V8SC history.

If Lowndes can finish second overall it will be the sixth time in his career he’s finished runner-up (2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013).

van Gisbergen – fourth and 39 points behind Lowndes – could improve upon his best-ever championship result. His previous best was fourth in 2011 with Stone Brothers Racing.

Former Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica beat MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi to victory in the annual non-championship Monza Rally.

Monza was a straight fight from the outset between Kubica and three-time winner Valentino Rossi, also driving a Fiesta.

In mixed conditions, Kubica opened up a small advantage on the two stages of the opening evening, but the Pole fell behind during Saturday, not helped by a tire choice that he felt was too hard.

Having started the final day seven seconds behind Rossi, he won both of Sunday's stages - the final one by 17s - to put the result beyond doubt.

Barrichello wins Stock Car Brazil Championship
Rubens Barrichello
Former IndyCar driver and 11-time Formula One Grand Prix winner Ruben Barrichello clinched the 2014 Stock Car Brazil championship with a third-place finish at Curitiba. It was the 42-year-old Sao Paulo native's first racing championship since Barrichello won the 1991 British Formula 3 championship.

Driving the #111 Full Time Sports Chevrolet Sonic, Barrichello earned wins earlier this season at Goiania and Cascavel, and scored three second-place finishes, in addition to the third-place today. And after competing overseas for years, Barrichello noted that the championship was special because it occurred in front of the Brazilian public.

"Only now, Brazil starts to know me," Barrichello told Autosport. "And I am loving being in my country, in front of such an emotional public."

Mercedes: Manufacturers won't exit F1
Wolff says other manufacturers won't leave F1. Yeah right.  If you have no chance to catch up (with the current rules no one can catch Mercedes) and you lose all the time your product looks inferior and you are spending $100s of millions advertising that your cars are inferior.  So you have to leave.
Amid a push by Red Bull to change the power units for 2016 - with an idea for twin turbos and standard energy recovery systems having been put forward - there has been speculation that not all the current car makers may stick around.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has suggested that Renault could turn its back if costs are not brought under control, while Mercedes is unlikely to remain if F1 abandons the current hybrid power units.

But Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff insists the situation is not as dramatic as has been made out, and says that all the manufacturers involved are F1 are fully behind the current V6 turbo engines.

When asked about statements from Horner saying F1 should not be afraid of Mercedes quitting if the rules are changed, Wolff told AUTOSPORT: "They are interesting comments, but probably the whole story has been turned around a little bit.

"What we have said is that Formula 1 needs long-term stability and that the constructors in Formula 1, Renault, Honda and Mercedes, decided to enter Formula 1 based on a set of rules.

"And all of the constructors, including Ferrari, share that vision, share that view.

Porsche to start 1-2 for WEC finale
We have seen this before, Porsche starting up front, then in the race Toyota mops them up.

Porsche will start the final round of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship in Brazil from pole position for the third race in a row with the #20 919 Hybrid of Mark Webber on pole.

Though they faced stiff opposition from the sister #14 car of Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb, which has started from pole position on three occasions in 2014, the trio would average out with a 1min 17.676secs to edge their teammates by a tenth of a second.

Title winners Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi head up row two as they close on the manufacturers' title for Toyota, while the #2 Audi of Marcel Fassler, Benoit Treluyer and Andre Lotterer starts fourth. Tom Kristensen, in his final ever sportscar race, will get away from sixth place in the #1 Audi.

GP2: Pierre Gasly ends testing on top
The final day of post-season testing saw once again a few changes in the field starting with Kimiya Sato joining RT RUSSIAN TIME for the day whilst Emil Bernstorff moved to Carlin. Raffaele Marciello re-joined Racing Engineering alongside Mitch Evans. 2014 GP3 Series Champion Alex Lynn tested with ART Grand Prix. After two days spent with Trident, Rene Binder switched to Hilmer Motorsport for the last day. Norman Nato moved to Arden international while Pal Varhaug returned to a GP2 car with Status Grand Prix. Jordan King moved to MP Motorsport and finally, Trident had a complete new line-up made up of Luis Sa Silva and Simon Trummer.

As the track went live, the cars quickly fed onto the track with Esteban Ocon setting the early pace until Kevin Ceccon demoted him to P2. Within the first hour, Pierre Gasly who has been the quickest man over the first two days was able to lap the track in a 1:49.455, a laptime good enough to go top. Ocon and Rio Haryanto both broke the 1m50s barrier too, but they were still five tenths slower than Gasly. In the final thirty minutes of the session, Gasly improved on his personal best whilst Jordan King and Marciello also improved to move up to P2 and P5 respectively. At the checkered flag, Sergey Sirotkin, Ceccon, Binder, Lynn and Nathanael Berthon rounded up the top ten.

GP3: Ghiotto quickest on final day in Yas Marina
Trident’s Luca Ghiotto posted the fastest time on the third and final day of post-season testing at the Yas Marina circuit with a 1:55.134. Ferrari Academy driver Antonio Fuoco led the way in the morning session.

The test got underway in hazy and humid conditions. Riccardo Agostini returned to the paddock with his team Hilmer Motorsport and was first to lap in the 1m56’s.
