Race Team Execs Debate The Hot Topics Facing Them, Including Sponsor Costs
Race team execs from various global motorsports outlets touched on the challenges and opportunities they are facing during a Day 2 panel at the '16 Motorsports Marketing Forum. Joe Gibbs Racing President Dave Alpern revealed that sponsorship revenue still accounts for 85% of JGR's annual revenue, starkly underscoring why corporate partnerships are as integral as they are in NASCAR.

Alpern also hit on the NASCAR TV ratings topic, saying when JGR talks to sponsors, the topic "comes up all the time." He said, "It's a big deal. What I have to keep reminding our staff and partners is (a sponsor is) investing in a marketing platform. TV is a very big bucket (of that), but it's just -- we haven't talked about B2B, there are a number of things. ... It's on us to fill other buckets with other things that make up for that." Execs on the panel also hit on how they approach sponsorship pitches and when to bring their team owner into the mix.

Predicting the 2017 Indy 500 winner
With a year of experience under his belt, can Alexander Rossi backup his Indy 500 win with a repeat?
With a year of experience under his belt, can Alexander Rossi backup his Indy 500 win with a repeat?
The 2017 Indianapolis 500 is still almost six months away. But if you listened to Trackside this week, you heard a discussion that I found interesting writes George Phillips of Oilpressure.

The question that was thrown out was -- If you were to bet money based on what we know right now, would you bet on Team Penske to win next year's Indianapolis 500 or would you take the field? That's what I like about the offseason. The lack of weekly racing brings out conversations that make you think.

Keep in mind, Team Penske has already committed to five cars for the first time ever -- at least in my memory. Their five cars present a formidable lineup -- Juan Montoya, Helio Castroneves, Will Power, Simon Pagenaud and Josef Newgarden. That lineup represents five Indianapolis 500 victories, three IndyCar championships and a very promising newcomer to the team that came in third in this past Indianapolis 500.

Waltrip & Joy Comment on Announcement of Monster Energy as NASCAR Premier Series Entitlement Sponsor
Darrell Waltrip
Darrell Waltrip
NASCAR and Monster Energy on Thursday announced a multi-year agreement for the energy drink company to become the new entitlement sponsor of NASCAR's premier series, beginning in January.  Below, FOX NASCAR analyst and Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip and FOX NASCAR play-by-play announcer Mike Joy offer their perspective on the announcement.

On the announcement of Monster Energy as the new premier series sponsor:

"Whether I was driving, owning a team or broadcasting races for FOX Sports, I have always wanted an entitlement sponsor that will promote the sport and take it to places it never has been before, putting it in front of fans we've never appealed to before.  RJ Reynolds set an extremely high mark years ago in where they took NASCAR as the series sponsor.  Afterward, Nextel and then Sprint were the right sponsors at the right time due to the technology they could provide, and they took NASCAR to another level in their own way.  By the same token, I expect Monster Energy will promote the series in ways it never has been marketed before."

Lorandi fastest on Day 2
Jenzer Motorsport’s Alessio Lorandi clocked the quickest time on day two of post-season testing. The Italian’s laptime of 1:55.734 was set in the afternoon. Finn and Red Bull protg Niko Kari led the way in the morning session at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Day 2 of post-season testing in Abu Dhabi got underway with a brand new face: Frenchman Anthoine Hubert with ART GP, as well as the return of Kevin Joerg (Arden). ART GP’s Jack Aitken was first into the 1m56’s with he track slightly damp at Turns 13/14 at the start of the day. Matheus Leist clocked the second quickest time for Trident in a busy start to proceedings. Finn and Red Bull protege Niko Kari led the way in the morning session at

Switching to Arden Motorsport for day 2, Steijn Schothorst moved up to P2 ahead of Max Defourny (ART GP). After the one hour mark, Aitken continued to lead the way by half a second, until Kari shot to the head of the timesheet with a 1:55.949. Lorandi went third at the start of the final hour where the top three remained unchanged in a trouble-free session.

At the checkered flag it was Kari, Aitken, Lorandi, Leist, Arjun Maini, Schothorst, Hubert, Giuliano Alesi, Max Defourny and Leonardo Pulcini.

Schothorst was first to set the early pace at the beginning of the afternoon session. There was a brief red flag for Alesi who stopped on track. Once the session resumed it was Kari who lit up the timing screens to take top spot until Leist demoted the Finn to second. Santino Ferrucci (testing for Trident) then bettered his time to go P1 as he was the first driver to dip into the 1m56’s.

Lorandi again showed his pace as he flew to the top of the timings before Kari re-claimed P1. There was a second red flag when Ferrucci stopped at the pitlane exit. The action was quick to resume and it was an Arden one-two-three briefly with Schothorst leading the way over Kari and Joerg.

Koiranen GP tester Raoul Hyman moved up the order to P2 in the final half hour while the Dutchman improved on his own personal best to lap in the 1m55’s in P1. There was another short interruption to proceedings when Julian Falchero stopped on the back straight. There were under 10 minutes remaining when the track was live again, but there was enough time for Italian Lorandi to sweep into P1 and retain it until the checkered flag.

Behind the Jenzer driver was: Ferrucci, Schothorst, Kari, Hubert, Raoul Hyman, Aitken, Leist, Maini and Joerg.

Tomorrow’s third and final day of post-season testing will run from 08.00 – 10.30, with the afternoon session being held from 13:20 – 15.50 (GMT+4).
