Warwick pans McLaren for driver procrastination
Rumor has it that after Honda fell flat on their face in their opening test of the new engine, Alonso may have told McLaren he won't drive for them and would prefer to tend to his garden rather than ruin his reputation further, throwing McLaren's driver lineup wide open
Former F1 driver Derek Warwick has slammed McLaren for their "disgusting" treatment of Jenson Button, who he feels deserves to stay.

The Brit and his team-mate Kevin Magnussen are still waiting to hear whether or not they have a job for next season.

Although the McLaren board met on Thursday, they failed to reach a decision and announced that their driver line-up will only be revealed "next week at the earliest."

McLaren's delay has resulted in widespread criticism of their handling as they have either deprived Button of a farewell grand prix or Magnussen of the opportunity to find another race-seat.

Warwick, though, is hoping that when it all pans out, Button will still be in F1.

Kimi Raikkonen hallucinating
Kimi Raikkonen looks like a deer in headlights.  He is hallucinating if he things Ferrari is going to make gains against the Mercedes powered teams - the rules are frozen. They will only widen the gap if anything.
Kimi Raikkonen says Ferrari has everything it needs to recover from a difficult 2014 campaign, in which the team placed fourth in the Constructors' Championship.

Ferrari endured its first winless season since 1993 with Raikkonen finishing 12th overall, the lowest placing for a full-time driver for the team in over 30 years.

But the Finn, who will line-up alongside four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel in 2015, is confident that the team has the resources to move up the grid.

"It's not been an easy year for me or the team," admitted Raikkonen.

"Ferrari is always expected to win races and fight at the front. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, but for the next season we laid down the basis for Ferrari to come back to the level it should be at.

Diageo boss defends F1 participation
Amidst calls by the Eurocare to ban alcohol sponsorship, Johnnie Walker's parent company insists it is an "extraordinary opportunity" to promote responsible drinking.

The European Alcohol Policy Alliance, known as Eurocare, recently wrote to FIA president Jean Todt claiming that alcohol sponsorship in Formula 1 goes against EU law.

Urging Todt to take "take moral leadership", the letter stated that FIA "has responsibilities, both as a shareholder in the Formula One business and regulator of the sport."

The letter continued: "Allowing alcohol sponsorship in Formula One seems to contradict many official guidelines for the marketing of alcohol.

In open wheel racing, talent not required, just a big checkbook
GP2 champ Jolyon Palmer is delusional if he thinks talent counts for much in open wheel racing.  All that matters these days is how big a check you can bring to buy your ride - as the cancer destroying open wheel racing continues unabated
Jolyon Palmer says it is "gutting" that winning the GP2 championship doesn't carry enough weight to earn him an F1 seat.

Having won the championship in Sochi – with the Abu Dhabi round still to go – Palmer was hopeful of earning a seat in F1, but arrived in Abu Dhabi with Felipe Nasr having secured a seat at Sauber for 2015. Admitting he is not holding much hope of getting an F1 seat next year, Palmer is set to become the third champion in a row – after Davide Valsecchi and Fabio Leimer – to fail to make the step up and he says the title should be enough to earn the winner a drive.

"It's gutting really, because people who I've beaten are on the grid and there's nothing I can do about it." Palmer said. "I won the championship with a round to spare, I've done everything I possibly could this year and won the GP2 championship in a bit of style as well and the guy I've beaten quite comfortably all year [Nasr] is on the grid.

"But that's the state of F1 this year, he's got the backing and Sauber needed the backing. If I think about it too much I get very better, so the best is to focus on what I can do, not worry about what anyone else is doing and maximize my own future."

However, Palmer said he felt it was hurting GP2's reputation if the championship winner isn't progressing in to F1.

Far from the best, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. is Most Popular Driver again (Update) UPDATE
Girlfriend Amy Reimann with Earnhardt Jr. as he rides his Daddy's coattails to another most popular title
Getty Images for NASCAR
NASCAR Sprint Cup champions, they come and go. Heck, there have been four different champs just in the past four years! But Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s status as the undisputed fan favorite - that's eternal.

Earnhardt won his record 12th straight award for Most Popular Driver Friday during NASCAR's season-ending ceremony. The award is voted on by fans, leaving little doubt as to who would come out on top. Other drivers who finished in the top 10 were (in alphabetical order): Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Brad Keselowski, Danica Patrick, Tony Stewart and Josh Wise.

Keselowski displayed a sense of humor about his runner-up status. Either that, or he is in a monster truck of delusion.

Bill Elliott holds the record for most overall popular-driver awards with 16, and he was the last driver to win it before Earnhardt kicked off his streak. In fact, the streak began after Elliott removed himself from the voting for the award, and at this point, that might be what it takes for Dale Jr. to stop winning it.

Whincup crowned the best ever in Australian motorsport
Jamie Whincup
Jamie Whincup is the greatest driver in the history of Australian motorsport. And the 31-year-old appears destined to hold the best record in the sport for some time to come.

The Sydney NRMA 500 was thrown into turmoil for the second successive day as massive storms smashed Sydney Olympic Park and while he didn't back up his two wins of yesterday, Whincup was fourth today, plenty to give him the biggest points margin of his six titles.

Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen exploited a mistake on what ultimately became the very last lap by Garth Tander to win the Sunday race and incredibly leapfrog Mark Winterbottom to finish second behind Whincup in the 2014 Championship.

Thieves steal 60 trophies from Red Bull (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Added photos of stolen trophies below.

Horner - thieves stole replicas worth nothing
(GMM)  More than 60 trophies won by Red Bull were stolen from the F1 team's factory late on Friday night.

Team boss Christian Horner confirmed that a vehicle broke through the front entrance of the quadruple world champion's Milton Keynes headquarters, causing "significant damage".

"Beyond the aggressive nature of this break in, we are perplexed why anyone would take these trophies," he said on Saturday.

Horner said that while the value of the trophies is "extraordinarily high" to the team because they were earned through success, "their intrinsic value is low".

Longtime racing official Evelyn Pratt dies at 95
Evelyn Pratt
Doug Allen photo
Longtime and loved Southern California racing official Evelyn Pratt has passed away in Texas.  She was 95-years-old.  In a career that spanned more than 65-years in racing, she not only served as a race official, but was also a racer herself in the Ascot Powder Puff Class.

"Evelyn’s passing is being felt and mourned throughout the racing world," said saddened Perris Auto Speedway promoter Don Kazarian early on Saturday morning.  "She was the hardest worker in all of motorsports.  She was a pit steward with the original CRA, SCRA and up until a couple of seasons ago with USAC/CRA.  Evelyn performed her job with diligence and pride.

She was firm, but fair.  Down through the decades she was involved with the greats in the sport all the way down to the little guy who had never been on the track before and she treated them all the same.  When a driver needed a scolding about conduct on the track or in the pits, she was would deliver it in a stern manner so he would understand.  And, if that same driver needed some understanding later that night, she would be the first one to throw an arm around him and talk to him."

Below are snippets from a BMW Motorsport press release about the marque's 2015 racing programs

DTM: Consistency in the cockpit for year two with the BMW M4 DTM.

BMW Motorsport will again race with eight BMW M4 DTMs in the 2015 DTM season. The driver line-up is virtually unchanged. Reigning DTM champion Marco Wittmann (DE), Martin Tomczyk (DE), Maxime Martin (BE), Bruno Spengler (CA), Augusto Farfus (BR), Timo Glock (DE) and Antonio Félix da Costa (PT) will again take on the tough opposition in the DTM in BMW Motorsport colours in 2015. Aston Martin's next Bond car hints at future design - will have Ford V-8
Limited run DB10
Aston Martin says that James Bond's next car also previews the brand's new look.

The DB10 two-door coupe, built exclusively for the next installment in the Bond film franchise, Spectre, overhauls a design language first used by the V12 Vanquish in 2001.

"The DB10 gives a glimpse to the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins," the company said in a statement.

Aston Martin chose not to sit the DB10 on the new platform it is developing for future generations of cars. Instead it sits on the same VH (vertical/horizontal) platform first introduced on the 2001 Vanquish, a company spokeswoman told Automotive News Europe, adding that the DB10 is powered by a Ford-supplied 4.7-liter V-8 engine used in the V8 Vantage.

Affected vehicles include certain 2015 Ford Mustangs equipped with 2.3-liter engines built at Flat Rock Assembly Plant, Sept. 25, 2014 to Oct. 9, 2014. Ford is aware of 712 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories and 16 in Canada. These totals are as of Dec. 3, 2014.

Whincup dances in the Sydney rain
The start was dry
A fierce Sydney storm failed to halt the relentless march of all-time V8 Supercar Champion Jamie Whincup as he increased his already spectacular margin on a crazy day at Sydney Olympic Park.

The Sydney NRMA 500 was hammered by a massive downpour in the second of the two Saturday races – Whincup won the first – and the race was red flagged, the second time that has happened this year after the extraordinary scenes at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Whincup was superlative as the jet black clouds closed in and as always his team made the perfect call for wet tires moments before it bucketed down. With the track flooding, race control made the call soon after to stop the race.

In an interview today on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Stevens touched on how he and Busch quickly became a successful pair. "Kyle and I, we have a little bit of history now of building some communication and some success behind us," he said.

The First Time with Kimi Raikkonen
The first thing Kimi Raikkonen did this morning was wake up
2014 has been a year of firsts for Kimi Raikkonen, and not all of them wanted - his return to Ferrari marked his first winless Formula One season since 2006, and his first without a podium since his maiden year in 2001.

As the Finn refocuses for 2015, determined to help the Scuderia become a front-running force once more, we asked him about some of the other firsts in his life - including why he never bothered with childhood heroes, how his first big crash came in one of his first F1 tests, and why he quickly established as a child that ice hockey wasn't for him...

Who was your first hero when you were a child?

Kimi Raikkonen: I never had any heroes. That's not for me.

What was the first Grand Prix you can remember watching?

According to a police report, investigators collected a garbage can by the house, which was set by the curb for pick-up. Investigators informed the Drug Enforcement Agency, which noted it found many meth-making materials in the can, including empty containers of drain cleaner, batteries and cold medicine. Ambrose was almost dead last, his reflexes slowed after years of driving wallowing NASCAR Cup cars
Marcos Ambrose says he has work to do ‘cleaning up bad habits from NASCAR' after a low-key first day back in the V8 Supercars saddle at Sydney Olympic Park.

Although Ambrose was classified in 24th in the final practice run, he is hopeful of capitalizing on the set-up of fellow DJR driver Scott Pye, who was fourth fastest.

The results were also affected by the age of the new rubber allocated to Ambrose due to his status as a wildcard entry.

Ambrose and his DJR-led crew that is filled with Team Penske personnel methodically ticked off a pre-planned work sheet through the three 20-minute practice sessions.

Indy Car titan Roger Penske takes the flag on race car ownership
Roger Penske
Roger Penske's utter dominance as a race-car owner and one-man titan makes it easy to forget that he was once a star driver with Indy 500 dreams.

One wouldn't expect a man who heads an automotive fiefdom with revenues north of $19 billion, whose very name is synonymous with speed, to consider the road not taken. But sometimes Roger Penske wonders what might have been if he had accepted an invitation to try out for the Indianapolis 500.

That was back in 1965, when the 77-year-old was just a 28-year-old Lehigh grad from Shaker Heights, Ohio, and a driver on the brink of superstardom. After making his professional debut—in which, as a rookie in 1961, he'd claim the checkered flag in three consecutive events on the way to earning a Sports Car Club of America championship—he won eight more races over the next three years.

Vergne puzzled by Red Bull logic
Jean-Eric Vergne
Jean-Eric Vergne has expressed disbelief regarding the decision by Scuderia Toro Rosso to drop him in favor of 20-year-old Carlos Sainz and 17-year-old Max Verstappen. Vergne, 24, had been with the Red Bull 'B' team from 2012-2014, and this season outscored teammate Daniil Kvyat who was promoted to the senior Red Bull squad over Vergne.

"Nothing has made any sense," Vergne told AUTOSPORT before the Toro Rosso driver decision was officially confirmed.

"Last year I know [the reason I lost out on a Red Bull drive to Ricciardo], this year I guess there is some politics. I don't know.

"They [Red Bull] always say points matter; they know I was 5kg overweight compared to my team-mate, so I had at least two tenths [disadvantage] that no one knew about in qualifying - they know all the technical issues I had that didn't allow me to score points.

Drivers Larson, Karam Discuss Brand-Building Via Social Media
Up-and-coming drivers Kyle Larson and Sage Karam yesterday during the closing session of the '14 NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum in Las Vegas shared some thoughts on how they are using Twitter, Instagram and other social media to grow their brands.

Karam, who is competing in the Verizon IndyCar Series for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, said, "I found in my experiences that fans and people that don't know you, they want to see behind-the-scenes stuff and they love visual stuff. If you just put a tweet out saying, 'At the track,' you might get a few favorites or retweets. But then if you show them a photo at the track in your garage with your engineers, it gets so much more interest."

Larson, a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitor also with Ganassi, added, "Drivers interact with other drivers (on social media) a lot in a good way and they'll get into each other on the racetrack. ... That gets fans really involved." SportsBusinessdaily.com

Stewart has surgery on leg, heads to Vegas
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart has undergone a fourth surgery on the leg he broke last year during a sprint car race in Iowa. Stewart was released from the hospital on Wednesday. He was then headed to Las Vegas to celebrate Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kevin Harvick's championship. Stewart broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg during the Aug. 5, 2013, crash and underwent two surgeries immediately after the accident, including one to insert a metal rod inside the tibia. A third surgery last year was to close a wound on his shin.

Stewart spokesman Mike Arning called Monday's surgery in Charlotte, NC, the equivalent of routine maintenance. Arning said Stewart will be on crutches in Las Vegas, where he will attend an industry-wide luncheon on Thursday and the season-ending awards ceremony that will fete Harvick. But because of the surgery, Stewart will defer team owner duties to co-owner Gene Haas. SHR will have Haas sit with Harvick at the head table and handle speaking duties, while Stewart planned to sit in the audience. Associated Press

Test

Rival networks Fox and NBC have co-produced a 30-second spot marketing their upcoming NASCAR coverage. The spot, which will run on Fox Sports and NBC networks, shows race highlights and ends with a voice over that says, "NASCAR. A new era. A renewed spirit."

One of the highlights include footage of a post-race brawl that involved Jeff Gordon, Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick. In between the highlights, the spot has copy that reads, "A new era. A renewed spirit. This season. Two networks. Fox Sports. NBC Sports. Join Forces. Buckle Up."

NBC Sports Group CMO John Miller and Fox Sports Exec VP/Marketing Robert Gottlieb oversaw the production. The spot will be unveiled at the '14 NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum in Las Vegas today. Fox and NBC last summer signed $8.2B in new rights deals that take effect in less than three months. Xfinity Establishing Goals Of What It Wants Out Of First Year Titling NASCAR's No. 2 Series
With fewer than 80 days left before the start of the inaugural NASCAR Xfinity Series season, Comcast Senior Dir of Sports Brand Marketing Matt Lederer said his team is already baselining its goals for the sponsorship, and that Year 1 will be focused on building the brand. Lederer, speaking yesterday at the '14 NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum, said, "We were very methodical about our strategy. For Year 1, it's all about brand metrics: Are (NASCAR fans) increasing their consideration of us? What is their impression of us? Has it improved through sponsorships? We've begun to baseline that data. We do a combination of internal and outsourcing to follow our brand metrics. Impressions, likelihood to recommend ... those are the things we're going to measure."

Keselowski Calls For Fourth Manufacturer To Enter NASCAR, Wants More TV Programming
'Bad Brad' Keselowski
Seemingly always ready to share a frank opinion on the state of his sport, Brad Keselowski was true to form during a one-on-one interview at the ’14 NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum, where the driver voiced both cautious optimism about the new Chase format and concern about challenges ahead. Keselowski said he views NASCAR today as being "in a good position."

Keselowski: "We've kind of hit a spot where we feel somewhat steady, but we certainly have challenges ahead of us. ... The NASCAR sponsorship market has leveled off. We’re seeing a lot of sponsors re-up, a few new ones come in and a few exit. It seems to be at a fairly steady rate. We have NASCAR fans kind of in a box. Everybody looks at NASCAR fans as baby boomers, and I saw that the average NASCAR fan is about seven years older than the average fan of sports. That's a challenge, but also one thing that comes to mind is, How do we transfer to winning over Millennials?"

Talks To Extend Sprint's Cup Series Title Sponsorship Will Begin Soon
Feeling bullish after the first season of the new Chase for the Sprint Cup format, NASCAR COO Brent Dewar expressed plenty of confidence about the future during a one-on-one interview yesterday at the '14 NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum, held at the Aria Resort in Las Vegas. Dewar said the mainstream allure of the new knockout-style Chase reinvigorated both fans and the industry, leading to growth in ratings and the potential for new sponsorships. Dewar said he expects more drama in the early part of next season as drivers start to utilize what they learned this season about how the new format works. He added that he expects ESPN to continue to cover the sport meaningfully despite the fact that media rights are shifting to NBC and Fox. Dewar, a longtime GM exec before joining NASCAR, also revealed that he and other key execs will soon begin talks with Sprint, whose title sponsorship runs through '16, about a new deal. Citing Sprint's recent challenges in the telecom industry, Dewar conceded that the task will be a tall one. "That will be a big effort,” he said. The following are other highlights from the interview.

NASCAR Champion pays tribute to military
NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Kevin Harvick visited Nellis Air Force Base Tuesday
LAS VEGAS—In a massive hangar that houses the fighter jets flown by the Thunderbirds, against the backdrop of a gigantic American flag reminiscent of George C. Scott’s monologue in the movie "Patton," Kevin Harvick fielded questions from a group of enthusiastic NASCAR fans.

But this was no ordinary fan engagement. Those asking Harvick about everything from the final laps at Homestead-Miami Speedway to the now-notorious shove of Brad Keselowski at Texas Motor Speedway were clad not in the livery of their favorite drivers, but in camouflage.

The recently crowned NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion came to Nellis Air Force Base to express his appreciation for those who serve, with his words often interrupted by the near-deafening roar of jets taking off from a nearby runway.

The Peterson in the name is Ric Peterson, a Calgary native and owner of Oculus Transport, a major oil field services company that operates in Western Canada.
