Ericsson takes measured approach to first IndyCar test (Update)
Marcus Ericsson
Marcus Ericsson - "‏First day in the new office. Over a 100 laps completed and lots of things learned. The car is so much fun to drive! Big thanks @SPMIndyCar for a great day! Can we start 2019 already!?"

UPDATE Added photo of Ericsson in the SPM Honda and his quote from Twitter.

12/04/18 When the first car came to life Tuesday morning at Sebring International Raceway, Marcus Ericsson, still dressed in street clothes, stood and smiled broadly while watching it leave the pits.

“I’d never seen these cars live before,” Ericsson said after watching Team Penske’s three-car fleet begin a day-long test. “It was cool to see the other guys go out. The car looks really cool. I’ve watched a lot of clips on the internet to prepare myself for this. To be here today and also have Penske here is a perfect spot for me.”

Nine days ago, Ericsson was competing in the Formula One season finale in Abu Dhabi. On Tuesday, he was writing the latest episode of his racing career, far from the opulence of F1, deep in the shopworn charm of Sebring, and enjoying every lap of his first test with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

Trump tariff threat will force Audi to open a huge manufacturing plant in the U.S.

You either make cars here in the USA or pay a 25% tariff Trump tells automakers.....like USA companies pay for cars sold in Europe and China

Audi generated 5.06 billion euros ($5.7 billion) of global operating income last year, excluding items, making it the biggest single contributor to Volkswagen’s overall profit. About 700 million euros of the brand’s earnings before interest and taxes, or 15 percent of its total, comes from the U.S., estimates Michael Dean, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence.

The sum would be essentially wiped out if President Donald Trump followed through with a threat to impose a 25 percent duty on automotive imports from the European Union, BI estimates. VW Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess and other German car executives met with President Donald Trump on Tuesday in a bid to prevent the move.

Fernando Alonso won't have to deal with such rules in 2019
Formula 1 has moved to change rules relating to how the grid is formed when penalties are handed out in an effort to prevent drivers not heading out in qualifying.

Regulations for 2018 changed so that drivers who amassed more than 15 places worth of penalties were sent to the rear of the grid.

This followed a string of embarrassing instances were teams picked up penalties which were cumulatively worth dozens of grid spots.

One thing is certain, Mary Barra will get a big bonus from GM for laying off workers and increasing profits.  Thousands of workers have to go on unemployment or uproot their family. CEOs don't care how many people they screw as long as they get a huge bonus

Statement from GM CEO Mary Barra:

“I had very constructive meetings with members of Congress from Ohio and Maryland.

"I share their concerns about the impact the actions we announced last week will have on our employees, their families and the communities. These were very difficult decisions -- decisions I take very personally.

"I informed the members that many hourly employees at the impacted U.S. plants will have the opportunity to work at other U.S. GM plants and that we are committed to working with them to minimize the impact on the communities.

"I also informed them that all salaried GM workers impacted by these actions are being offered outplacement services to help them transition to new jobs.”

VW Says Its Next Generation of Internal Combustion Engines Will Be Its Last
Stick a fork in the internal combustion engine. It's about done.
Stick a fork in the internal combustion engine. It's about done.
Pretty much every major car company is planning a big pivot to electric vehicles in the coming years, but few are going as big as the Volkswagen Group. It’s planning nearly 30 cars on one platform alone by 2022, and more on other EV architectures in development like the Porsche Taycan. So how does VW balance that with developing more gasoline and diesel cars? Simple: It doesn’t.

Bloomberg today reports that Volkswagen’s next generation of internal combustion engines, due out starting in 2026, will be its last. After that it will focus primarily on EV development.

VW and its brands won’t go cold turkey, of course. According to this story, the plan is to continue revising conventional engines as necessary, especially for developing markets that lack a charging infrastructure. Just don’t expect all-new ones in the decades to come:
