Andretti team tabs Leverage Agency to seek sponsorship  Andretti Autosport has hired N.Y.-based marketing firm Leverage Agency to assist it with sponsorship sales. It will be the IndyCar team's first exclusive sales agency. Leverage, which is led by CEO Ben Sturner, will be working to sign new sponsors for Andretti, which lost two of its biggest partners, Izod and 7-Eleven, earlier this year.

Andretti Autosport Senior VP & CMO John Lopes said, "We've operated very autonomously over the years, however, with the increasingly competitive landscape of sports sponsorship, we felt it would be prudent to align with a group like Leverage to expand our reach quicker." The race team currently has more than 50 partners. It is searching for partners in the lifestyle and apparel, retail and other categories.

Verstappen critical of Petrov  Former Formula 1 pilot Jos Verstappen has said in his opinion Renault number #2 Vitaly Petrov was the most disappointing of driver of the season and he has criticized the Russian rookie for having far too many accidents.

“I would say Vitaly [Petrov] was both the worst driver and worst newcomer this season,” Verstappen wrote in his latest column in Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf.

“In the last race he was very strong and kept Fernando Alonso behind him - as a result of which the Spaniard lost out on the title. But apart from that a lot went wrong. More ...

Scott Speed talks about getting sacked  Scott Speed doesn't believe Red Bull Racing treated him fairly, ethically or legally, in releasing him on Nov. 24.

"I'm very disappointed," Speed said. "This is by no means settled and I'm sure there will be a lawsuit over it. It's a 100 percent breach [of his contract]. I think it was handled very poorly. The last thing I wanted to do is sue someone. It's retarded, it's childish, but I have been given no other choice. It's like they're saying, 'Have fun making the motor home payment next year.'

"You're released two weeks after the season, in late November, and it's late to try to do something. It was a big surprise."

Red Bull Racing released this statement a week ago regarding Speed: "We have exercised our rights to end the relationship at the end of 2010," officials said. "We wish Scott the best of luck in his career." More ...

Alex Brundle fastest after opening day at Barcelona  Alex Brundle finished fastest on the opening day of Formula Two winter testing at Barcelona today, rising to the top of the timesheets in the closing stages of the final overboost-enabled session.

Brundle, fourth and second in the day's earlier sessions, set his overall best with 12 minutes of the session remaining, meaning he faced an anxious wait as several drivers took turns trying to better his time.

Afternoon pacesetter Jack Clarke ensured a dramatic finish as he set his fastest time in the final 30 seconds of the session, going purple in sector two but ultimately falling just over a tenth of a second shy of Brundle’s benchmark. Brundle therefore ended the session - and the day - fastest, marking an impressive return to F2 following a season competing in British Formula 3. More ...

Alex Tagliani: Personal Connections
Alex Tagliani (R) and his 'Smokin Hot' wife Bronte
"There are a lot cool things about the IZOD IndyCar Series -the cars, the speed, the technology, the racing, the adrenaline rush -but recently, I was really reminded of one of the things that really makes IndyCar special for me: personal connections.

"I got to really appreciate the more personal side of the IndyCar series, starting with a visit with some really young fans at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. I went with fellow IndyCar drivers Justin Wilson and Ed Carpenter as part of the "Racing for Kids" charity program in an effort to lift their spirits and help them forget the medical challenges they face.

While I know they are all a little young to know who we are, the kids are pretty impressed to know we are racecar drivers and just happy we spend time in a playroom playing video games or coloring, or visiting them in their rooms. We signed autographs, handed out hats and Mattel Hot Wheels die cast cars and took photos. More ...

Q and A with IndyCar driver Justin Wilson
Justin Wilson
F1 Archive caught up with Justin Wilson recently to talk about his past season in IndyCar and what the future holds.  You can read the full article here, but below are the questions and answers from that article.

Formula 1 Archive: You recently re-signed for a second year with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing – how much of a benefit is that in terms of season preparation and building relationships with engineers and other team members?

Justin Wilson: Rejoining DRR (Dreyer & Reinbold Racing)for a second season should be a huge advantage as it means we can concentrate on some of the finer details that really make a difference in the IZOD IndyCar series.

I’ve already met up with the team and we have started to focus on those areas we know we need to work on. We are analyzing each race from this season and working out what to do better.

One of the things that I’ve learned with the Dallara is that the car set-ups are very track-specific. You have to develop a Toronto set-up year after year at Toronto – you can’t just bolt on a Long Beach set-up that worked well earlier that season just because it’s a similar kind of street course.
And it’s not just the road courses, the ovals are the same. Staying with the same team means we have an opportunity to start where we finished last season and find more speed at every track. More ...

Q and A with Mark Webber on shoulder fracture
Mark Webber
There has been a lot written about Red Bull Racing’s Mark Webber this week in regard to a shoulder injury that he revealed in his new book, an injury he failed to disclose to team bosses at Red Bull Racing. After seeing the amount of media attention this tidbit of information stirred up, the Aussie racer released the following Q and A.....

It has emerged that you sustained a shoulder injury prior to the Japanese Grand Prix. Now everyone’s talking about it…
A little bit of information can be a dangerous thing! I came off a mountain bike while training between the races in Singapore and Japan, and an x-ray revealed a small fracture to my right shoulder. I was very confident it wouldn’t affect my performance in the car, which is why I didn’t tell anyone.

Do you regret not telling anyone at Red Bull Racing?
There was no need. The shoulder wasn’t causing me a problem, so there was no need to talk about it to anyone. If I’d had any issues with it in the car, then of course I would have told the team. But that wasn’t the case. I’ve never missed a Grand Prix but of course if I couldn’t drive the car a) safely and b) on the limit, I would have notified the team. More ...

Gordon will drive the car for 22 races annually over the next three years to raise awareness of and help solve the growing problem of hunger among older Americans. The DTEH car is candy apple red fading down to black, with dominant white DTEH logos. DTEH is helping millions of older Americans who are facing hunger across the United States.

As part of the No. 24 sponsorship, DTEH, Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports will engage the NASCAR fan base, corporations and charitable organizations via a text-to-donate program; activation at racetracks across the country; further research on the causes and consequences of hunger in older Americans; and an innovative national grant program that will provide resources to address the problem at a local level. Proton rebadges Lotus Europa
Proton Lekir
Malaysian car company Proton, which normally only makes boring econo cars, is set to make some vehicles that will excite enthusiasts. However, these cars aren’t exactly Proton originals, but rebadged Lotus cars.

First up is the Lekir, which is essentially a Lotus Europa dressed up in re-altered clothes. Lotus (which is owned by Proton) had recently discontinued production of the unloved Europa in favor of the new Evora, so it can easily start building its old model for its parent company. This will allow Lotus to sell more vehicles and will in return bring in some much needed enthusiasts to Proton dealers. Also, since Proton has a much larger international distribution network, the Europa could finally see the success it never had.

When the Lekir hits the showroom, it will feature either a 1.6-liter pr 2.0-liter turbo charged four-cylinder engine, the latter producing about 220-hp.

The award is given to a driver who has shown the promise of being a superstar in the making. Its namesake belongs to John Blewett lll, a successful modified racing driver who died following a racing accident in 2007. "I am honored that a respected organization like EMPA has recognized the success of my past season," Karam said. "I hope the Young Gun Award nomination draws more attention to open-wheel racing, INDYCAR and Andretti Autosport. It's an exciting time to be involved in INDYCAR and the ladder system."

The award will be presented during the EMPA's convention Jan. 9-11, 2011 in Valley Forge, Pa.  Past winners of the award include Lucas Wolfe, Bob Santos lll, Cody Darrah and Ryan Truex.

"For Sage to be nominated for this award is quite an honor and he is very deserving," said J-F Thormann, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Andretti Autosport. "We're very proud of what he accomplished in his first year with us and we can't wait to see what is capable of doing in 2011 and beyond."

Karam, a 15-year old native of Nazareth, Pa., won the 2010 USF2000 driver championship with Andretti Autosport, scoring nine victories in 12 starts during the season. He also helped Andretti Autosport clinch the USF2000 team title, its first championship since re-branding in 2009.  He will move to the Star Mazda presented by Goodyear in 2011 with Andretti Autosport.

Bobby Rahal buys Lincoln Park mansion  Retired professional race car driver Bobby Rahal, who won the 1986 Indianapolis 500, moved from Chicago to Columbus, Ohio, in 1981, but the Glen Ellyn native never forgot his roots. A part-time Chicago resident from 2005 until 2008, Rahal, 57, now is set to make Chicago his exclusive home. He recently paid $3.295 million for a 12-room, 6,600-square-foot Lincoln Park mansion and also has listed his longtime six-bedroom, 13,192-square-foot mansion on 8 acres in New Albany, Ohio, for $4.75 million.

“In 2005, I bought a home on the same street as my new house,” Rahal said in an exclusive interview. “I sold it (in 2008), but it always was my plan to come back to Chicago.; And my wife’s family and my family both are from the area. Chicago’s just a fabulous place to live. We love our house, and we love our street.” More ...

Piquets win libel case against Renault  Statement from the Lawyer for Nelson Piquet Junior and Nelson Piquet Senior – Dominic Crossley of Collyer Bristow LLP:

“Today the Renault Formula One Team apologized in the High Court for defaming my two clients, the motor racing father and son Nelson and Nelsinho Piquet.

This marks the start rather than the end of the long journey they are both taking to correct many of the wrongs that took place during last year’s “crashgate” scandal.

They were both treated appallingly by Renault F1 when they dared to reveal the scandal to the governing body; and Nelsinho was abused terribly throughout his absurdly short career in F1. It is to the immense credit of both my clients that they have refused to be deterred from righting the wrongs despite the ferocity of the attacks and the size of the opponents they have had to confront.

Nelson Piquet dominated F1 during the early 80s and his reputation as a motorsport legend should remain untarnished by this saga. F1 has been deprived of the best of Nelsinho and it is to its detriment that his talent is now being demonstrated elsewhere.

Whilst neither of them should ever have had to prove Renault F1’s allegations false they are both delighted with the successful conclusion of the case.” More ...

Ecclestone uses mugging bruises for sponsor advert
(GMM)  Bernie Ecclestone has proved he can turn even a violent mugging into a commercial opportunity.

The F1 chief executive was viciously punched and kicked outside F1's London headquarters late last month as a reportedly hugely-expensive watch was taken from his wrist.

A graphic photo of his battered face is now featured on a print advert for his sport's official watch sponsor, including the Ecclestone quote: "See what people will do for a Hublot."

The Nyon-based Swiss watchmaker confirmed in a statement that the photograph and quote attributed to 80-year-old Ecclestone in the advert are genuine.

7sur7.be said the adverts will debut in the Financial Times and the International Herald Tribune on Wednesday.

Indian F1 driver Karun Chandhok said the move was "classic Mr. E".

Kovalainen: Recovery going well  Heikki Kovalainen says he's on the road to recovery after his final CAT scans revealed he had not suffered serious injury in his RoC crash.  Kovalainen's return to the Race of Champions, which he won back in 2002, ended prematurely when he crashed his Audi R8 sportscar in last Sunday's first heat.

The impact knocked the Lotus Racing driver unconscious while his girlfriend and passenger, Catherine Hyde, suffered a hairline fracture of the pelvis and muscle damage.

However, the good news for Kovalainen at least, is that the final brain scans, which took place on Sunday, did not reveal any "problems."

"Recovery going well," the Finn Tweeted.

"Final scans for the head done, no problems and just one more week resting then back to fitness training!"

Hill: Schumacher didn’t disgrace himself  1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill has predicted that Michael Schumacher will ‘prove everyone wrong in 2011’ and bounce back from what was a pretty disappointing comeback year. Indeed while Schumacher’s performances weren’t especially great in 2010, Hill added he didn’t think the German did that bad, even if he did only finish ninth in the standings.

"I don't think he disgraced himself at all this year," Hill told the Press Association. "He showed it's hard to come back and maintain pace when you're older.

“He will have had things to think about I'm sure, but he will never give up. That's what defines him. He's a formidable competitor, and I'm sure he is going to prove everyone wrong next year."

Schumacher 7, Stirling Moss 0  UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, By the end of this past season old man Schumacher was beating his younger, very highly regarded, teammate Nico Rosberg on a regular basis.  If he beats him again in 2011 the anti-Schumacher British media will eat their words.  And God forbid, if Schumacher wins a race or his 8th world title, jealous people like driver Stirling Moss and the rest of the British media will eat crow.  It was Schumacher who destroyed F1 win and title records of British greats Jimmy Clark and Jackie Stewart, so I guess it is understandable why they try to discredit Schumacher on a weekly basis.  Tom Reynolds

12/07/10 Michael Schumacher has 7, count them 7 F1 world titles.  Stirling Moss has zero, count them zero.  So you can imagine just how jealous Moss must be that he was never good enough to win a single world title.

Following the end of the championship, Sir Stirling Moss has given his opinion on Michael’s return to the sport he once used to command, and has classed it as ’flawed’ and claims that for the first time, Michael was partnered with a competitive teammate and he couldn’t keep up...

"The fact he was seven-time world champion ruins what being a world champion is all about," Moss was quoted as saying. "He is flawed. He was all over the place. We never saw him at his best when he had a really good driver alongside him. We never saw him in a Ferrari with a driver of similar talent really, so I think that (the number of titles) is misleading."

"I don't think he regrets coming back, but it was ill-advised. The most important contribution he had was dragging Ferrari back to the top. But the fact he is carrying on next year is interesting, although quite frankly, I wouldn't be worried if I was up against him."

Recent NASCAR Layoffs  Layoffs have been a part of NASCAR for two years now and came about as the economy tanked. When that happened, corporations had to tighten their budgets which meant, of course, layoffs of their own.

It also meant many of them that spent good sponsorship money in NASCAR had to pull the plug on it – or at least reduce it significantly. One result is that even several of the top-tier teams have had to negotiate less expensive deals with two, three or even four financial supporters to make it through the 36-race season.

Penske Racing laid off 50 people earlier in the week with more to come. The prime reason is that Penske has yet to find sponsorship for Sam Hornish, Jr., whose NASCAR career might be derailed if the money can’t be found.

Richard Petty Motorsports laid off 75 employees. RPM itself might have ceased to exist had not new capital been infused by Petty and a couple of investment firms.

Roush Fenway Racing. laid off as many as 60 people.

While people starve NASCAR's ethanol fuel to come from Wisconsin  UPDATE Click here for a rather different take on the proceedings. Michael Knight is a veteran PR and media type with a long history in IndyCar and motorsports.

Here is an excerpt from Knight's blog:

Color NASCAR’s second Sprint Cup awards activities in Las Vegas green. But, for a few moments last Thursday, I was trying so hard to keep from laughing that I was close to blue.

What had me amused, other legitimate considerations aside, this clearly was at least an indirect shot at the IndyCar Series. NASCAR has many ways to play the racing political game and in the aftermath of the unhappy IndyCar-International Speedway Corp. split, this was an example of who still has the muscle in the U.S. motorsports industry.

Remember, when IndyCar went to ethanol a few years ago it was using corn ethanol in association with a U.S. trade group (EPIC). When said trade organization went belly-up, IndyCar had to go to Brazil for its ethanol.

Now NASCAR has staked its claim to the red, white and blue benefits of green and that’s no coincidence. It’s a political shot across the bow of the IndyCar series. NASCAR is even copying IndyCar’s E-logo on the green flag. More ...

Team Penske signs big IZOD deal  UPDATE #2 Here are some of the facts and some other clarifications on the Penske to IZOD press release.

1. IZOD has said time and time again that they are not interested in being a full time primary sponsor on any car.  They are only willing to pay for full IZOD branding on an INDYCAR at the Indy 500 and a few select races.

2. There are few teams, or perhaps any team other than Team Penske, that have the luxury of running a car for the full season on the budget for the Indy 500 and another race or two.  For their own reasons Team Penske may have decided to do that for IZOD.  Andretti was obviously unwilling to do that.  No one knows if Penske has signed another sponsor for six to ten races, or fifteen other sponsors for ‘one offs’ at the other races or will self fund the balance of the races.  What is clear is the MONEY a sponsor pays for the Indy 500 and one or two other races is not sufficient to run a car for the season.  All the B2B and other intangible marketing reasons fall short if a team doesn’t have enough money to pay their employees, make lease payments, pay for hotels and airfare as all of those type of expenses require hard cash.

3. No competent company that is considering a full season INDYCAR primary sponsorship would entertain a proposal that has them paying to be the primary sponsor at five million dollars or so a season and then vacating the car for the biggest race of the year, The Indy 500, which returns the biggest marketing value of the year.  Not going to happen.

4. With Andretti Autosport just barely piecing together Hunter-Reay’s car on a very thin budget last year it is no surprise that Andretti Autosport had to find a sponsor that was willing to be a primary sponsor, and provide a proper budget, for the entire season.  It may very well have been part of RHR’s contract that the team have a proper full season sponsor and a proper budget to allow the team to field a competitive car at all of the races, which takes time, planning, and money.  Additionally, you can bet Michael Andretti is focused on returning his team to the winners circle on a regular basis and fighting for the championship.  Hunter-Reay is without a doubt their best chance of doing that, and they will need a full proper budget to compete with Penske and CGR.

So with Hunter-Reay unavailable to run a ‘one off’ or two, Andretti Autosport unwilling to provide a part time sponsor a full time driver and sidepods in return for payment for a couple of races it is not so surprising that IZOD ended up with Team Penske who has the luxury of running Team Penske sidepods for some races and all the time in the world to try and sell sponsorship for the other races.  If you factor into the deal that Verizon is a Penske sponsor as well and will provide substantial media buys where the IZOD brand is prominent it makes perfect sense.  More ...
