Audi extends motorsport commitment, but no Sebring for new R18
New Audi R18
Audi aims to continue its string of victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours with a completely new LMP1 sports car development. Since its debut in 1999, the brand with the Four Rings has won the world’s most important endurance race as many as nine times with the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. In doing so, Audi has equaled this feat in the race’s roll of honor with Ferrari. With the new R18, which was presented at the Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt on the evening of Friday, December 10, 2010, Audi is aiming for its tenth Le Mans success in 2011.

For the first time since 1999, Audi will contest Le Mans with a closed coupe again. "In the future, aerodynamic efficiency will be even more important at Le Mans than it was in the past," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "A closed car has clear advantages in this respect. Our computer simulations have been confirmed in the wind tunnel and during initial track tests." More ...

Legal dispute erupts over Gordon's logo  UPDATE #2 Robby Gordon Statement about Speed Energy Logo:
"To our fans and SPEED Energy supporters, I am happy to announce that we were able to reach a mutually beneficial settlement of our dispute with Specialized Bicycles regarding logos, and we will soon be selling all of our same merchandise with our new SPEED Energy Logo. In fact, we anticipate having merchandise with the new SPEED Energy logo available for on-line purchase between December 18th-20th with shipping available for holiday delivery. In the meantime, merchandise with the old logo has been discontinued. SPEED Energy plans to have energy drink products with the new SPEED logo available in stores in early January 2011. Please continue to check back for updates on when and where products will be available in your area. We want to thank you for your continued support of SPEED Energy and Robby Gordon Motorsports. We believe the new look of the product and merchandise is cooler than anything you've seen." Planet Robby

12/10/10 Robby Gordon, involved in a legal battle with Specialized Bicycle Components, has altered the logo for his Speed Energy drink. A settlement in the case is likely, according to court filings, and apparently will come with the alteration of the logo, which keeps the two diagonal orange bars of the original Speed Energy logo but does not include the connecting bar that made it look more like the letter S. Specialized obtained an injunction in federal court last month to keep Gordon and Robby Gordon Motorsports from using his original logo on the new drink - which he is selling in order to fund his race team - after claiming that his logo looked too much like the one used by the bicycle company. The injunction was to go into effect once Specialized posted a $3 million bond to cover damages in the event it lost the lawsuit. According to recent court filings, no bond has been posted. The two sides participated in mediation Nov. 23 and "are now working towards a potential settlement of this action." Scene Daily More ...

Q and A with Wolfgang Ullrich on new closed cockpit car  Wolfgang Ullrich explains why the German auto maker had moved away from the open-cockpit cars for LeMans and ALMS.

Q. Why have you decided to go with a closed-cockpit car?

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich: There are two reasons. The first is the change to the sporting rules, about two and a half years ago, when they decided to change the pit stop limit from four mechanics to two. With four guys changing tires the driver change was the important factor for the pit stop time. Now, with the doubling of the time to change the tires, even with the closed car, you can easily change the driver before the tire change is complete.

Point two is the more you reduce the engine power the more important the fuel efficiency is. The aerodynamic efficiency of a closed car will always be better than an open one, because you have all the disturbances that are given by the open cockpit, such as the driver helmets. So, nowadays, there is not really a choice – it has to be a closed one. More ...

Latest F1 news in brief - Monday  UPDATE
CLARIFICATION: Autosport editor says Fernandes' Lotus effort 'cynical'
(GMM)  The editor of the authoritative motor racing magazine Autosport did not publicly criticize Team Lotus on its Facebook page. Earlier on Twitter, the team's technical boss Mike Gascoyne slammed the British magazine for its recent coverage of the Lotus saga. The magazine had raised eyebrows with its December cover by insisting that Group Lotus linking up with Renault for 2011 means "The real Lotus is back".

"Lots of fans unhappy with the Autosport articles this week, me too," said Gascoyne.

Gascoyne posted a link to what he described as the "unprofessional" reply of Autosport editor Andrew van de Burgt to the criticism of the allegedly biased coverage. It was reported that van de Burgt had posted the disparaging reply on Team Lotus' official Facebook page and then deleted it, but the Autosport editor clarified on Monday that the excerpt linked by Gascoyne was in fact extracted from a private letter and used without permission. Van de Burgt said he is seeking legal advice.

FIA to confirm new rules for 2011, 2013  UPDATE The International Automobile Federation (FIA) said in a statement after a meeting of its World Motor Sport Council in Monaco that the new specification engine would underline a “commitment to improving sustainability and addressing the needs of the automotive industry.

“Following dialogue with the engine manufacturers and experts in this field, the power units will be four cylinders, 1.6 liter with high pressure gasoline injection up to 500 bar with a maximum of 12,000 rpm.”

The FIA said the new engines would deliver a 35 percent reduction in fuel consumption as well as featuring extensive energy management and energy recovery systems. Current engines are rev-limited to 18,000 rpm.

At the same time, they would maintain current levels of performance.

Each driver will be allowed five engines in 2013, but that allocation will be reduced to four from 2014. This year, with 19 races, they were allowed a maximum of eight with a penalty of 10 places on the starting grid for any additional units. More ...

Lopez: There won't be two Lotus teams  'Lotus Renault GP' is not the only team using the 'Lotus' name in Formula One as Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes's outfit is set to run under the 'Team Lotus' name in their second season in the sport. Fernandes also planned to race under the black-and-gold livery.

The dispute between the two parties over who has the rights to the 'Lotus' name will be resolved London High Court.

Lopez, though, is hoping for a solution before the new season kicks off in March.

"As far as having four (Lotus) cars next year on the grid, I don't think it's going to happen," he told Reuters.

"I tend to be a positive person, so I would say that nobody has anything to win from this - except maybe Group Lotus as having four cars running for the same brand and only being involved financially in two of them.

"The natural course of things should be that whoever is the Lotus brand should race as Lotus and whoever isn't, and actually had asked for a license to do so, should race as something else. More ...

Former Hamilton sponsor jailed  UPDATE Added photo of Lewis Hamilton on Macau grid in 2004 for Moulin backing.

Lewis Hamilton on Macau GP grid in 2004.  Note Moulin sponsorship on his car
12/12/10 A former sponsor of Lewis Hamilton, when the 2008 F1 World champion drove in Formula 3, has been jailed for 12 years after having been found guilty to committing fraud amounting to over $60 million. The fraudster is also the father of Hamilton’s ex-girlfriend Jodia Bo-kee.

Hong Kong businessman Ma Bo-kee, 67, was owner of the world’s leading world’s largest eyewear companies Moulin International before being declared bankrupt in 2007.

Hamilton met Jodia Bo-kee during college and they started dating. She helped arrange for Moulin International to sponsor Hamilton in the high profile 2004 Macau F3 race. That year he took pole position in qualifying at the tricky street circuit but spun out during the race.

In his 2008 autobiography My Story, Hamilton wrote about his ex-girlfriend Jodia Bo-kee: “At the time I was without McLaren, I had to find my own sponsorship money. Jodia said, ‘My dad owns this company in Hong Kong and would love to sponsor you.’ I told her there was no way I wanted to do that but she went away and sorted it out anyway.”

Jodia Bo-kee reportedly are no longer in touch and Hamilton now dates 32-year-old Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger.

Porsche unveils new 911 GTS RSR
2011 Porsche GT3 RSR
The Porsche 911 GT3 RSR takes off into the new motorsport season with extensive modifications. The 2011 version of the world’s most successful GT race car celebrated its international premiere at the “Night of Champions” party held at the R&D Centre in Weissach to mark the end of the motorsport season. Priority in the further development of the GT3 RSR was given to the newly designed aerodynamics at the front and rear, changes to the suspension kinematics and to the engine.

The 4.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine now delivers 455 hp (355 kW) at 7,800 revs, five horsepower more than its predecessor. The power increase results from an engine management system which adapts even better to different fuel grades, as well as a redesigned exhaust system and a modified air intake housing. Moreover, the drivability of the famously efficient engine has undergone further improvements. Maximum revs remain unchanged at 9,400 rpm.

Clearly visible are the modifications to the front. A new front lip provides higher downforce at the front axle. The front wheels are now wider with the rims growing from 11 to 12 inches giving additional grip and less of an understeering tendency. The position of the rear wing and the shape of the wing mounting also underwent optimization and were adapted to the new rear fairing with additional air outlet louvers. The rear lid was also redesigned for optimized air ducting. Like the 911 GT3 Cup and the GT3 R, the RSR has now been equipped with the LED rear lights taken from the latest 911 road-legal cars. Ferrari welcomes move to scrap team orders  (GMM) Stefano Domenicali has welcomed the FIA's abolition of the rule prohibiting team orders.

The governing body, now headed by president Jean Todt, revisited the controversial rule after Ferrari's place-swapping during this year's German grand prix at Hockenheim.

The Maranello based team never admitted to ordering Felipe Massa to move aside for Fernando Alonso, but at the same time has always maintained that F1 is a team sport in which team strategies are commonplace.

"Finally, we have said goodbye to this pointless hypocrisy," said team boss Domenicali after Friday's announcement that article 39.1 has been "deleted" for 2011.

"For us, formula one is a team sport and we have always maintained that viewpoint and it should be treated as such," he told reporters at the Bologna motor show.

Scott Speed files $6.5 million lawsuit against Red Bull Racing  NASCAR driver Scott Speed filed a $6.5 million breach-of-contract lawsuit Friday afternoon against Red Bull Racing, the team that released Speed following the 2010 season. In the lawsuit, filed in North Carolina Superior Court in Statesville, N.C., Speed claims that Red Bull did not fund the team as necessary to compete at the Cup level. According to the lawsuit, Speed signed a three-year deal in September 2007 for a salary of $300,000 in 2008, $500,000 in 2009 and $1 million in 2010. He would receive 50 percent of prize money for each top-10 finish, 45 percent for finishes 11th-20th and 40 percent of prize money for finishes of 21st or worse. In June 2008, the deal was amended to include 2011 at a salary of $1.5 million and options for 2012-2013 at raises of $500,000 annually. In January 2010, the deal was revised to cut Speed's pay from $1 million to $500,000 for 2010, according to the complaint. In May 2010, Red Bull picked up Speed's option through 2013, according to the complaint, but then fired him Nov. 23. The $6.5 million figure represents the salary Speed would have received from 2011-2013, in addition to the $500,000 reduction for 2010. Speed said Wednesday that the filing of the lawsuit was in hopes of being able to pay bills due next year, given that the chances of now getting a ride for 2011 are slim. Red Bull Racing officials indicated Wednesday that they would not comment on Speed's release or any pending litigation. Scene Daily

Jack Clarke finishes on top at Barcelona
Jack Clarke
Jack Clarke put the seal on a fantastic F2 winter testing campaign by finishing fastest on the final day of the second test at Barcelona.

With prime conditions in the first hour of the day, Clarke made a decisive call to switch to new rubber early in the first hour of the day and it paid dividends as he stormed to a 1:37.121s. Several drivers mirrored the move and also set their best times in the first hour, although others were able to make a slight improvement when the overboost function was enabled for the final evening session.

Clarke though set the standard and finished more than half a second clear of the rest of the field, continuing his remarkable trend of finishing inside the top three in every session during the four days of winter testing at Portimão and Barcelona. More ...

FIA scraps team orders ban for 2011  (GMM)  The rule prohibiting team orders will be "deleted" from the regulations in 2011, the FIA announced on Friday.

After a meeting in Monaco of the World Motor Sport Council, the sport's governing body said the controversial article 39.1 "is deleted" from the rules.

The regulation - introduced in 2002 - came under the spotlight this season, when Ferrari was penalized $100,000 but otherwise escaped without sanction for switching the order of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso by issuing a clandestine radio message.

Now, teams simply face the prospect of bringing "the sport into disrepute" according to the standard article 151c "and any other relevant provisions" will apply to their actions during grands prix.

Also rubber-stamped on Friday was the new four-cylinder turbo engine formula for 2013, including a five-engine per driver limit in 2013 reducing to four engines in 2014.

In 2011, gearboxes must be used for five consecutive races instead of four as was the case this year, and cars will feature moveable rear wings to boost overtaking.

Electric single seater presented in Mexico  UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, An open wheel car that can run 20 to 25 minutes between battery replacements?  I can see future race cars where pit stops will be who can change their batteries and tires faster.  You are spot on, electric is the future for the automobile.  IndyCar missed a golden opportunity to become a test bed for every car manufacturer in the world by not having two engines in their new 2012 car - a small (very small) fossil fuel engine coupled with an electric motor.  The fuel tank could be reduced in size and the space and that of the sidepods replaced with quick change batteries.  Any race series that does not have electric power as part of their future in the next 5 years is going to become irrelevant to every car manufacturer.  Yehuda Rosenberg

Meira: Kanaan likely to get ride  Vitor Meira has spent a considerable amount of time with Tony Kanaan lately -- training for and competing in triathlon races -- and he has formulated an opinion about the unemployed former Izod IndyCar Series champion: Getting a ride for next season won't be difficult; getting one that pays well likely will be.

Both drivers are in Brazil this week, and Meira said Thursday that companies in their home country don't figure to provide the level of sponsorship that Kanaan seeks.

Kanaan, who lost his ride with Andretti Auto- sport after 7-Eleven did not renew, is looking for $3 million per year to help fund a ride. He made that amount last season with Michael Andretti's team. More ...

MAZDASPEED Motorsports: News from PRI  UPDATE #2
Road to Indy Ladder
Added the Road to Indy Ladder graphic to the right.

12/09/10 A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, With the announcement that Mazda is joining ranks with IndyCar for the development of drivers, what does this do to their relationship with Nascar and the Grand-Am series? Jon Edwards needs to be in an IndyCar instead of driving around in those Grand-Am POS. Is this one more feather in the cap of RB and IndyCar? Does Nascar have any idea what is hitting them now (Attendance, TV Ratings, Sponsors all in decline) and what will hit them (IndyCar getting back to where they were 15-20 years ago as a major player in the US and international racing scene)? Thanks. Brandon Stevens

Dear Brandon, Mazda is still involved with the Grand-Am series, so we do not view this announcement as a negative against them, but more of a positive statement that IndyCar and open wheel are on a roll and they want to be part of it.  Mark C.

12/09/10 The number one brand in road racing returned to the biggest motorsports trade show in the country to make a number of early announcements for the 2011 season as the MAZDASPEED team gathered at the annual Performance Racing Industry show to share updates on a variety of topics.

2.    Mazda and Honda jointly announce “B-Spec” in conjunction with the SCCA and NASA.  Other OEM’s encouraged to join in.  (SEE BELOW)
