IndyCar Spring Training slated for February at Laguna Seca
IndyCar teams will test at Laguna Seca on Feb. 8th before heading to COTA on the 12th and 13th
2004 CART action. IndyCar teams will test at Laguna Seca on Feb. 8th before heading to COTA on the 12th and 13th
Monterey County’s WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will host the inaugural INDYCAR Spring Training Friday, February 8 for drivers and teams ahead of the 2019 season. This is the first time these open-wheel cars have returned to their spiritual road racing home in 15 years, and the INDYCAR Spring Training provides teams with a valuable opportunity to be reacquainted with the challenging 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course, many of whom will drive it for the first time.

The final race of the past several INDYCAR seasons has determined the championship outcome, and this special on-track testing will provide teams and drivers with vital data gathering information in their INDYCAR championship quests since all roads in the 2019 INDYCAR season ends at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca September 20-22.

“Laguna Seca is such a cool place and I’m really excited that the INDYCAR Series is headed there in 2019,” said Simon Pagenaud of Team Penske. “With the test in February, we have a lot of work to do to get our car in the right place since it is a totally new place for our team, but it’s an exciting challenge we are ready for. I feel like I have a bit of an advantage over the competition having competed and won there in the American Le Mans Series. It’s such a fun California track and I know there’s a lot of buzz around that race as it will serve is the finale race next season. There’s just a lot to be looking forward to there and that all starts with our winter test.”

Critic turns Tesla believer
Tesla Model X
Tesla Model X
Daniel Burrus is author of seven books including the best-sellers Flash Foresight and TechnoTrends. The New York Times referred to him as one of the top three business gurus in spectacularly high demand as a speaker. It turns out that Burrus recently decided it was time for a new SUV. Something unusual happened when he decided to take the Tesla Model X on a test drive.

He recounts that he’d also taken test drives with the newest SUVs from BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Cadillac. “However, it was when I drove the Tesla Model X that I felt like I was driving in the future. After that test drive, my view of the other brands was changed. All the others instantly felt like the past,” says Burrus.

Cosworth out engineers Mercedes
Aston Martin Valkyrie race version
Aston Martin Valkyrie race version
Not that long ago, Aston Martin and Cosworth came forth with the first pictures and output numbers for the 6.5-liter V12 of the Valkyrie. Without taking the hybrid assistance into account, the 11,100-rpm mechanical marvel is much obliged to churn out 1,000 horsepower (1,014 PS) and 546 pound-feet (740 Nm) of torque.

As impressive as that is, let’s not forget that Mercedes-AMG took a different approach with the One. The Affalterbach-based outfit is modifying the 1.6-liter hybrid power unit from its Formula 1 racing car for this application, promising more than 1,000 ponies. The thing is, this high-revving V6 needs rebuilding every 50,000 kilometers (31,070 miles).

Another scandal at VW
Volkswagen's 2015 diesel emissions scandal isn't entirely in its rearview mirror yet, and now another scandal threatens the automaker. VW confirmed this week that it sold thousands of pre-production Volkswagen vehicles as used cars, which did not meet regulations in the United States and Europe.

German publication Handelsblatt reported on VW's admission after a spokesperson told reporters 6,400 pre-production cars were sold between 2006 and 2018. To make matters worse, Herbert Diess, CEO of VW Group, was aware of the practice since 2016 when he headed the Volkswagen brand. It took the automaker two years to finally inform owners their cars were sold without proper licensing from regulatory bodies. VW did not sell pre-production cars from other brands--only its mass-market Volkswagen brand.

Scott Tucker must pay $1.3 billion award in payday loan suit
Scott Tucker
Scott Tucker's race days are over. Today he dons a pinstripe suit behind bars
A U.S. appeals court on Monday upheld a nearly $1.3 billion award against a pro racecar driver who was sent to prison following a conviction for cheating consumers through his payday loan businesses.

Information Scott Tucker's companies provided consumers did not accurately disclose the loans' terms, a unanimous three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled.

The judges also said a lower court did not abuse its authority when it ordered Tucker and other defendants to pay back nearly $1.3 billion.

The case was brought by the Federal Trade Commission, which accused Tucker of deceiving consumers across the U.S. and illegally charging them undisclosed and inflated fees.

An attorney for Tucker, Paul C. Ray, said he was reviewing the decision, but he noted that one of the judges said a larger 9th Circuit panel should rehear the case.

FOX Sports opens the FIA Formula E Championship season live from Saudi Arabia on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 AM ET on FS1, with former Formula One engineer Steve Matchett hosting coverage of the Ad Diriyah ePrix.

The 13-round season, highlighted by the premiere of the series’ wildly anticipated Gen2 car, debuts on the 1.55-mile, 21-turn street course in Ad Diriyah, with Bob Varsha, Jack Nichols and IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti on the call.

“Formula E is unique,” said Matchett, who hosts for FOX Sports all season. “The series has no rivals; it stands alone. Frankly, upon its inception, the series seemed to be treated as a quirky novelty, something all but ignored by many enthusiasts of motor sports' established championships. However, this did nothing to dampen the ardor of this new 'green' series -- quite the opposite.

Manufacturers are now moving their best talent, like Al Oppenheiser, and most of their R&D money to electric cars.
Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer and spiritual leader of the Chevrolet Camaro program for more than a decade, is moving to General Motors' newly formed AV/EV organization to focus on zero-emission-vehicle development. Mark Dickens, current executive director of Performance Variants, Parts, Accessories, and Motorsports Engineering—not to mention card-carrying member of the Bonneville Salt Flats 200-MPH Club—will assume Oppenheiser's role as chief engineer of the Camaro program.

Credited with shepherding the fifth- and sixth-generation Camaro and performance variants such as the Z/28 and the ZL1 into existence, Oppenheiser developed a loyal team of colleagues within Chevrolet---not to mention the respect of the Camaro community and of Chevrolet performance fans as a whole. There is a contingent of late-model Camaro enthusiasts for whom Oppenheiser represents the human element behind the sheetmetal, tiny daylight openings and all. How they will react to his departure remains to be seen.
