U.S. proposes Vehicle-To-Vehicle mandate to avert crashes
Not only will cars be able to drive autonomously, they will also communicate with other cars around them
Not only will cars be able to drive autonomously, they will also communicate with other cars around them
U.S. auto safety regulators proposed requiring all new vehicles to be equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems, citing the technology's significant potential to reduce crashes.

The proposed mandate, released by the Department of Transportation today, would require all new cars and light trucks to have dedicated short-range communication systems that transmit and receive basic messages about the vehicles' speed, location, braking and other data. DSRC systems allow cars to "talk" to other vehicles on the road and to infrastructure equipped with the systems, allowing drivers to "see" around corners and be warned of potential crash.

Google is taking its autonomous R&D into production
Google's parent company Alphabet GOOG said Tuesday it would be spinning out its driverless-car technology from a research unit into a business unit, a signal the technology is getting closer to commercial viability.

The business unit will be called Waymo.

This is just the latest news during a time when auto makers have increasingly turned to Silicon Valley to develop self-driving car technology. In March, General Motors GM, +0.70% bought Cruise Automation, a self-driving technology startup, for $1 billion, and in May, Fiat Chrysler FCAU, +1.89% entered into a deal with Alphabet to develop self-driving Pacifica minivans.

The utility companies will supply the fuel of the future, gasoline stations will become extinct by 2050.

Early last year, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. proposed spending $654 million to install 25,000 electric-car chargers across Northern and Central California -- the largest charging program the nation had ever seen.

Those plans have since been scaled back, though they are still ambitious writes David R. Baker of the SF Chronicle.

Next week, California utility regulators are expected to vote on a considerably smaller, $130 million version of the program, after a long debate that raised fundamental questions about how public charging stations should be financed and installed.

Jenson Button
British Formula 1 greats Jenson Button and David Coulthard have joined the line-up of driving stars who will compete at the first Race Of Champions on American soil – inside Miami's new baseball stadium Marlins Park on January 21-22, 2017.

Majority of automotive investing turns to electric cars
Already the Tesla Model S P100D is the fastest car you can buy. Just wait until electric cars have supercapacitors instead of batteries.
Already the Tesla Model S P100D is the fastest car you can buy. Just wait until electric cars have supercapacitors instead of batteries. Can you say 0-60 in under 1 second and a full recharge in 2 minutes?

The car of the future will be electric, connected and, eventually, self-driving writes Stephen Wilmot of the Wall Street Journal. But where does that leave the car industry of the future? In a series of articles this month, Heard on the Street takes a look at how investors should approach the biggest technological disruption the car industry has faced in decades.

Battery-powered electric cars outsold gasoline ones at the dawn of the automotive age. In a decade or so they may well do so again. Investors need to watch out they don’t get caught on the wrong side of history.

Precisely when electric cars leave their current luxury or green-tech niches and--after many false starts--enter the mainstream depends above all on relative cost. On that front, electric vehicles have momentum.

All The Numbers From Pirelli's 2016 Formula One Season
Pirelli's 2016 F1 tires
Pirelli's 2016 F1 tires

"This has been an incredible season both on and off the track: here are a few facts and figures as a souvenir of a year that will go down in history. Pirelli has introduced a brand new compound – the ultrasoft – and also new regulations that allowed teams to use three compounds during each race, selected in advance. This extra tactical intrigue proved to be a highlight of the year, enhancing the show still further.

"We also had the final season of tires with a deliberately high level of degradation, as from next year we adopt a new philosophy in line with the latest direction for the sport. At the same time as completing this season, we were testing for the next one: both using prototypes in 2016 dimensions, and then, from August, prototypes in 2017 size on adapted mule cars over 24 cumulative test days.

2017 Chevrolet Volt Named to WardsAuto 10 Best Engines List
The Volt engine hardly ever runs as the Volt runs on electric most of the time
The Volt engine hardly ever runs as the Volt runs on electric most of the time. When it does run its sole function is the charge the battery as you drive - only when the battery has run out of power.
Chevrolet adds another industry recognition to its lineup as the 2017 Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle (EREV) earns a 2017 Wards 10 Best Engines Award.  This marks the second consecutive year that the Volt has won the award and the third time overall.

"The Chevy Volt propulsion system wins a spot on the Wards 10 Best Engines list for the second year in a row for three reasons,” said WardsAuto Senior Content Director Drew Winter. "It has a torquey, fun-to-drive personality. It offers impressive electric-only range of 53 miles and efficient gasoline-powered range whenever you need it for anxiety free driving. That is flexibility unequaled in the automotive world. And despite imitations, it continues to be one of the most unique and innovative propulsion systems ever mass produced."

"Our Global Propulsion Systems engineers are humbled by this industry accolade. The team worked hard to give the Chevrolet customer more, including more EV range and more EPA-estimated fuel economy, than the previous generation Volt,” said Dan Nicholson, vice president, Global Propulsion Systems. “Winning this award for two consecutive years highlights our company’s efforts and success in providing customers with an innovative and industry-leading propulsion system."

Chevrolet Bolt Requires Almost No Maintenance For First 150,000 Miles
The Chevy Volt will cost almost nothing for routine maintenance
The Chevy Volt will cost almost nothing for routine maintenance
One of the benefits of owning a pure electric car is that routine maintenance is significantly less than that of a comparable gas/diesel automobile. That's immediately apparent when you take a look at the maintenance schedule for the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt.

According to the 2017 Bolt EV owner's manual (which one can find the 360 handbook in PDF form here), the EV requires tire rotations every 7,500 miles, cabin air filter replacements every 22,500 and a coolant flush every 150,000 miles. Beyond that, any other maintenance required would fall outside of the "routine" umbrella. Oh, brake fluid replacement is recommended every 5 years, regardless of mileage.

Ferrari's Rory Byrne was such a man and his consultancy at Ferrari could play a key role combined with new technical head, Mattia Binotto, in creating a car that could find a more competitive footing in the 2017 season.

Californians are likely to pay more for gasoline, electricity, food and new homes -- and to feel their lives jolted in myriad other ways -- because their state broadly expanded its war on climate change this summer writes Ralph Vartabedian of the LA Times.

The ambitious new goals will require complex regulations on an unprecedented scale, but were approved in Sacramento without a study of possible economic repercussions

Some of the nation’s top energy, housing and business experts say the effort may not only raise the cost of staples, but also slow the pace of job and income growth for millions of California families.
