IndyCar switches to horrible looking logo
We wonder how much IndyCar paid to come up with this new horrible logo (above), dropping the better one below.
INDYCAR has introduced a new Verizon IndyCar Series logo to highlight its ongoing partnership with title sponsor Verizon. The designed series logo signals renewed efforts to bring INDYCAR's speed and excitement to its fans across the nation. For Verizon, the revised series identity marks the beginning of a new chapter in its effort to distinguish the Verizon brand in the minds of its consumers and signal the promise of the digital world - simple, reliable and in ways consumers want and need.

"We're excited to introduce the new Verizon IndyCar Series logo. Aesthetically, the new design is clean and highlights the Verizon checkmark - the universal sign of getting things done," said CJ O'Donnell, Chief Marketing Officer of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "This is appropriate for two brands with lofty aspirations for what will be a legendary 2016 season."

This logo change comes at the cusp of a legendary 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season, highlighted by the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on May 29. The historic event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the updated design, mark a new era for INDYCAR racing and continued momentum for the Verizon IndyCar Series.

Raphael Matos

Raphael Matos publicly defended himself on Friday via a press release, stating that he plans to appeal the ban.

Matos Statement

"On Thursday, I was surprised by the decision in the first instance, the Court of Justice of the Brazilian Automobile Confederation (CBA), punishing me with two years suspension after a drug test done at the Curitiba round revealed adverse results. Faced with rapid condemnations by some media and people who comment and speak unaware of the facts, I would make the necessary clarifications, reaffirming my belief in justice, in the certainty that shall turn to the appropriate instances to demonstrate my competence and absence of guilt.

Ecclestone: F1 is 'crap'
Bernie Ecclestone calls F1 crap
Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone says F1 is crap and with the sound of those engines, and with the Mercedes' parading around at the front with no competition, he's absolutely right.

"The problem is, I see things as they are and not the way I want them to be," Ecclestone was quoted as saying in the latest issue of the German magazine, Motorsport. "Do you think it's right when Fernando Alonso -- you've probably heard of him, he's a former world champion -- is at the back of the starting grid? Is it right that a driver changes his engine, qualifies in third place and then has to start from 13th? Is that right?

Humans are slamming into driverless cars and exposing a key flaw - human incompetence
Driverless cars are too perfect and need to be made 'stupid' to deal with human drivers

The self-driving car, that cutting-edge creation that’s supposed to lead to a world without accidents, is achieving the exact opposite right now: The vehicles have racked up a crash rate double that of those with human drivers.

The glitch?

They obey the law all the time, as in, without exception. This may sound like the right way to program a robot to drive a car, but good luck trying to merge onto a chaotic, jam-packed highway with traffic flying along well above the speed limit. It tends not to work out well.

California DMV draws up some pretty harsh self-driving-car regulations

The Google Car just got stunted....for now
The California DMV giveth, and the California DMV taketh away. California is one of just a few states to allow automakers to test self-driving-car technology on public roads, and it hasn't been terribly harsh on those that apply. However, once these cars land in the hands of the public, the DMV is going to tighten that leash a bit.

Right now, California's auto-governing body has a set of draft regulations that would kick in when autonomous vehicles are made available to the public. They aren't set in stone just yet -- there will be two public workshops next year to take public input -- but they're still surprisingly strict.

Kelley Blue Book to sponsor Chase Elliott
Chase Elliott
Chase Elliott
Hendrick Motorsports announced Thursday that Kelley Blue Book will join the list of sponsors for the team's No. 24 Chevrolet and rookie Chase Elliott in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

The two-year agreement includes primary sponsorship for two Sprint Cup races annually, extending a relationship that began in 2014 with Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Kelley Blue Book -- a vehicle valuation and research company based in Irvine, California -- will be an associate sponsor in other Sprint Cup Series events.

"Kelley Blue Book is a recognized and respected name in the automotive industry," Elliott said in a release provided by the team. "It means a lot to have them support the No. 24 team, and I can't wait to get behind the wheel of their car. Continuing what they've started at Hendrick Motorsports is going to be a lot of fun. Our entire team is looking forward to making the program a success."

Elliott, 20, is set for a Sunoco Rookie of the Year campaign in 2016, taking the reins of the iconic No. 24 Chevy from four-time series champion Jeff Gordon. The 2014 XFINITY Series champion competed in five Sprint Cup events last season in preparation for his first full season in NASCAR's top division.

The Hendrick organization announced last May that NAPA Auto Parts would be Elliott's primary sponsor for 24 races annually through the 2018 season.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway diversification plan has dangerous downside
Their core business is IndyCars but the Hulman George family must have a death wish for the series. They have brought in every series imaginable to IMS (except swamp buggy racing and that's just a matter of time) to dilute the customer base and divert them into spending their money on non-IndyCar events. Instead of IMS being the Mecca of IndyCar to help grow IndyCar, they are doing everything in their power to kill it. Instead of an Indy 400 on the oval to end the IndyCar Season they now bring in air races. Maybe two planes will collide and take out the pagoda. Wouldn't that be ironic!

Officials at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have been talking about diversifying the facility for years.

For at least a decade, I’ve heard rumblings about the possibility of massive concerts and a variety of other events to be held at the Speedway. In 2007, then Speedway executive Joie Chitwood first raised the idea of racing airplanes at the track.

The idea has been to use the massive fixed asset that Hulman & Co. has in the track to bring in new and bigger revenue streams, all the while increasing exposure for the venue.

It’s a worthy goal. And it all sounds so simple. And maybe it is. But many experienced business operators would tell you it isn’t.

Hulman & Co. CEO Mark Miles, who took his post overseeing the Speedway and IndyCar Series in late 2012, has punched the accelerator on the diversification initiative.

Last summer the track hosted a Rolling Stones concert. Next October, the Speedway will host an airplane race. There’s no reason to think there won’t be more diversification under Miles and Speedway President Doug Boles. Most people familiar with the Speedway would be surprised if there wasn’t.

No doubt, lots of time and energy have been spent by Speedway officials discussing and planning for ways to bring new events to the track. Negotiating the types of deals that brought the Rolling Stones or the Red Bull air race to the track aren’t done in a few days.

The Fort Wayne, Indiana native joined MWR and driver Clint Bowyer in 2012 after a healthy tenure at Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates from 2005 to 2011.

Richard Petty Motorsports announced today the addition of Chris Heroy as Crew Chief for Brian Scott. Heroy brings four years of experience as a Sprint Cup Series crew chief. The team announced Scott's addition to the team last week.

Heroy will work with Scott during his first full-time season as a Sprint Cup Series driver. This won't be the first time that Heroy worked with a rookie driver. He led Kyle Larson to Rookie of the Year honors in 2014. In 144 races as a Sprint Cup Series crew chief, Heroy posted 14 Top-Fives, 37 Top-10s and three poles with both rookie driver Larson and IndyCar Series driver Juan Pablo Montoya. Prior to joining Chip Ganassi Racing, Heroy was an engineer at Hendrick Motorsports.
