The driver line-up for this season’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, which begins in January, has been finalized. As they did last season, John Edwards (USA) and Jesse Krohn (FIN) will share the cockpit of the #24 BMW M8 GTE run by BMW Team RLL. In the team’s second car, the #25 BMW M8 GTE, Bruno Spengler (CAN) will contest the full season in the IMSA series. The Canadian will form a North American duo with Connor De Phillippi (USA).

BMW has issued a stop-sale and recall for various M5, M8, X5 M, and X6 M models produced throughout 2019 due to an issue with the transmission wiring harness.

While BMW has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the issue, a recall notice has yet to be issued by the agency, Motor1 reports. Nevertheless, posts at the Bimmer Post forums describe the issue and list all of the vehicles affected.

Brazilian media group Bandeirantes, which operates free-to-air and pay-television channels, has said that its rights deal for the IndyCar motorsport series has expired.

Bandeirantes, whose free-to-air channel operates as Band, confirmed the news to the Grande Premio website. Although Band has not struck an extended deal to continue broadcasting IndyCar, it said in a subsequent statement that it “retains an interest” in covering the series.

UPDATE Motorsports safety pioneer Bill Simpson died Monday after suffering a stroke last week, according to the Motorsports Hall of Fame. He was 79.

Simpson was a 2003 inductee of the Motorsports Hall of Fame, which recognized his long career in racing. He began as a drag racer and moved on to open-wheel racing, finishing 13th in the 1974 Indianapolis 500. After ending his career as a driver, he focused on Simpson Performance Products, which he founded.

Simpson is credited with helping spearhead many innovations and developed hundreds of safety products, including the first parachute in drag racing, the firesuit, heat shields and several generations of helmets.

The French works team's goal is to join Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull among the sport's grandee teams, albeit with a smaller budget.

"We showed last year that you can win races with our engine," team boss Cyril Abiteboul told Auto Motor und Sport.

(GMM) George Russell has played down hopes that Williams will be a midfield contender in 2020.

The British team has slumped to the back of the field with a big gap to the next-best rivals, but 2018 Formula 2 champion Russell said he quickly adjusted to the situation.

"I never thought about where I would be in a McLaren or a Mercedes," he told Auto Motor und Sport. "That would only be frustrating.

(GMM) F1 Race director Michael Masi has reminded the F1 world that the FIA has relaxed its approach to penalizing drivers.

At the end of the first season without Charlie Whiting, who died in Melbourne, his replacement Masi responded to critics who think stewards' decisions have been inconsistent in 2019.

"People sometimes forget that we all talked together at the second race of the season in Bahrain about what it means to let the drivers race," he said.
