NFL Stadiums, Orlando MLS Venue, Daytona Speedway Battling For Florida Tax Rebates
More than $900M in stadium construction and refurbishment is under way at four major league sports facilities in Florida, and in Tallahassee, the projects "have been vying for a piece of the state's newly enacted sports stadium incentive funding pie," according to Aaron Deslatte of the ORLANDO SENTINEL.

The four proposals pit EverBank Field, Sun Life Stadium, Orlando City SC's new MLS venue and Daytona Int'l Speedway "against each other." That has "injected more uncertainty into how the supposedly de-politicized stadium-incentive review is playing out."

FIA Implements Flashing Tail Lights for LMP1 Cars
Toyota Hybrids
With evolving technologies contributing to different fuel strategies, the FIA will implement a new safety measure for LMP1 cars next year competing in the World Endurance Championship. Revealed in the release of the 2015 technical regulations, all LMP1 cars must be equipped with flashing tail lights that would be activated in the event of a significant deceleration.

The flashing "stop" lights would be activated if loss of acceleration if greater than 0.4g within 0.2 seconds.

The change comes in the wake of the new-for-2014 LMP1 regulations, which regulated fuel consumption on a per lap or three lap average, resulting in some cars to slow unexpectedly on track in order to maintain its average. sportscar365

For awhile Nashville worked for the IRL
Back in May, Dover Motorsports found a buyer for its 1.33-mile Nashville Superspeedway. But said buyer, NeXovation Inc., has yet to close on its purchase and has now received a third extension on its closing deadline to Jan. 26, 2015.

Andy Humbles of The Tennessean reports that according to a Dover Motorsports filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, NeXovation agreed to release $1.1 million remaining in escrow to Dover and pay an extra $200,000 to get the deadline extended again.

The second deadline had been originally set for this Wednesday.

In all, NeXovation has now paid a non-refundable sum of $1.7 million to Dover. However, that sum will be applied toward the purchase price.

Straight No Chaser to sing 'Back Home Again in Indiana' at 2015 Indy 500
It takes a whole group to replace the magic of Jim Nabors
Atlantic Records recording group Straight No Chaser will perform "(Back Home Again in) Indiana" during the pre-race festivities for the 2015 Indianapolis 500 on May 24.

The world-renowned a cappella group, founded in 1996 at Indiana University-Bloomington, will sing the traditional song in 2015 as legendary entertainer Jim Nabors retired after the 2014 race, having performed the song live 35 times since 1972.

"One of the most cherished traditions each year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the singing of '(Back Home Again in) Indiana' and we are pleased that Straight No Chaser will join us next May to perform as we lead up to the start of the 99th Indianapolis 500," said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. "Our fans have offered us many suggestions for who and how the song should be performed in 2015 and having a group with a national following, strong Indiana roots and a true understanding of the importance of this moment make them a great fit for next year's race!"

Tost pleased despite missing target
Franz Tost
Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost believes his squad took a big step forward in 2014 despite not reaching their target in the Constructors' Championship.

The Faenza squad set their sights on a sixth place in the standings at the start of the year, but they finished seventh with 30 points - still an improvement on their P8 last year and P9 in 2012.

STR struggled with reliability issues early in the season due to the regulation changes with several retirements during the early half of the campaign, but they improved as the year went along.

Ricciardo pace 'not a factor' in Vettel exit (Update) UPDATE A reader asks, Dear AR1.com, How does one explain the breakdowns that Webber had while Vettel had so few in the prior four years?  Wasn’t that strange as well? Don Leslie

Dear Don, Indeed, it would seem if the team knows you are leaving, you are not taking any of the latest team ideas (parts development) or any glory (by winning) with you. AR1 Staff

12/20/14
This report is not accurate. AR1.com reported Vettel had already decided to move to Ferrari in May 2013 - a full 1.5 years before it was announced.  Riccardo's pace had nothing to do with his decision to leave. In fact we are willing to bet Red Bull knew he was leaving and stopped giving him the latest updates.  Wasn't it strange that Vettel's car always broke down and Ricciardo's almost never did?
(GMM)  Daniel Ricciardo's surprising pace was "probably a factor" in the decision taken by Sebastian Vettel to leave Red Bull. That is the claim of team boss Christian Horner, who admitted it is "weird" to see the quadruple world champion already wearing Ferrari red after so much success with the premier energy drink-owned team. However, the real reason is explained in the box to the right by AR1.com.

German Vettel caught everyone by surprise in early October when he announced he is leaving Red Bull.

But it was already known that the 27-year-old, wearing the number 1 on his car for the fourth season in a row, was no fan of the new turbo V6 formula.

"He didn't like what F1 had become and was quite vocal about it -- didn't like the engines, the noise, the way the car felt," Horner told the British broadcaster BBC's season review.

(GMM)  The future of ailing F1 team Caterham will be decided on Monday.

Harvard-grad leads ARA test at Daytona

ARCA tour to skip Milwaukee Mile
The ARCA Midwest Tour won't stop at the legendary Milwaukee Mile in 2015. The series had made one each of the past three years. Although prestigious, the event had seen interest drop year-to-year, and the 2014 race — run on a weekend after two Tuesday evening shows — became a bust for most involved. Sentiment doesn't pay bills. "Not to say every three years or every other year or something else won't come up that would make sense," ARCA boss Gregg McKarns told JSOnline.com. "But in today's climate it just doesn't make good financial sense to be there annually."

Dennis: We will dominate
Ron Dennis thinks McLaren Honda will dominate like in the Senna/Prost/Berger days
Ron Dennis says he will not be content with the revived McLaren-Honda partnership simply winning grands prix and instead wants to dominate Formula 1 as the team did in 1988.

McLaren famously won 15 out of 16 races in 1988 with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, with Mercedes matching that victory tally in the 19-round 2014 season.

Dennis said such feats of dominance are what marks a team out as being truly great.

"The 1988 car was very late and at the time testing was unlimited so when we arrived at Imola all the other teams had clearly demonstrated their competitiveness," he told Autosport.

As for the departing de la Rosa, Ferrari thanked the Spaniard "for the work he has done over the past two years".

Spyker Companies Declared Bankrupt
Today the District Court of Midden-Nederland, at the request of the administrator, converted the moratorium of payment, granted to Spyker N.V. and its wholly owned subsidiaries Spyker Automobielen B.V. and Spyker Events & Branding B.V. (collectively "Spyker" or the "Company") on December 2nd, last, to bankruptcy. The cause for this conversion was that the committed bridge funding did unfortunately not reach the company in time. The administrator will continue his work but now as receiver.

Victor R. Muller, Founder and Chief Executive Officer said: "None of the ambitions we had when we founded Spyker 15 years ago, has vanished as a result of today's events. In 2000 we set out to establish a super sports car business from scratch with a global distribution and we achieved that. Over the years we undertook some daring ventures that left their marks on the company which in turn contributed to today's demise.

Bernie's annual Christmas Card (Update) UPDATE (GMM)  Bernie Ecclestone has poked fun at the legal troubles that almost landed him in jail this year.

Every Christmas season, the F1 supremo sends out a card to his friends in the sport featuring a personalized cartoon.

In past years, he has poked fun at 'spygate', depicted Max Mosley whipping sore bottoms, shown Jean Todt holding hands in Concorde marriage and Lewis Hamilton fleeing a smoking McLaren for Mercedes-fuelled dollars.

For 2014, the 84-year-old Briton has turned the humorous heat on himself.

Marketing pros look at process for replacing Sprint
Don't worry, NASCAR fans, about Sprint leaving as the sponsor of the stockcar racing's premier series. At least not yet. Those in the marketing world think NASCAR will find a sponsor to replace the telecom company when it exits after the 2016 season.

It remains to be seen whether NASCAR can attract a company to spend an estimated $70 million-$75 million annually as it did when it first signed Nextel back in 2003 to start in 2004. But the quick service restaurant industry (Subway, Burger King, etc.), packaged goods (Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Unilever, etc.), consumer products (Panasonic, LG, etc.) or companies looking to boost their product line (as was Nextel) will be prime candidates for NASCAR's next deal.

Motorsports facilities get tax break
Track operators got the tax break they've been waiting for all year when the U.S. Senate on Tuesday passed a tax extenders package for the remainder of 2014. Included in the extensive list of tax breaks to be continued was a provision that allows motorsports facilities to depreciate new construction over seven years instead of the life of the project, which typically is 25 years or more. The congressional Joint Committee on Taxation estimates the provision will result in an $11 million tax break for motorsports facilities in 2015, a total $32 million from 2015 to 2019 and $33 million from 2015 to 2024.

It was part of an estimated $41.6 billion in tax breaks over the next 10 years that were approved by the House of Representatives 378-46 earlier this month and then by the Senate 76-16 (60 votes need for passage) on Tuesday. All that awaits now is the expected signature of President Barack Obama. The provision is similar to those granted to amusement parks, and track operators felt that the same break should apply to their facilities. After arguing the issue with the Internal Revenue Service, the issue became moot when Congress, as part of the Jobs Creation Act of 2004, granted the seven-year depreciation provision for new motorsports construction.

The provision covers all motorsports facilities, not just NASCAR facilities. Sporting News

Kurt Busch takes stand, calls ex's testimony 'fabrication'
NASCAR driver Kurt Busch took the stand during the second day of a protection order hearing in Kent County (Del.) Family Court on Wednesday, calling his ex-girlfriend's allegations that he smashed her head into a wall a "fabrication."

The testimony came as a family court commissioner prepared to decide on a protection order filed by Patricia Driscoll last month. There was no decision Wednesday and the hearing will resume Jan. 12, when Busch's lawyer Rusty Hardin will cross-examine him.

Busch, the 2004 Sprint Cup champion who has shown flashes of his temper on and off the track earning him the nickname ''The Outlaw," kept a cool head as he staunchly denied Driscoll's version of the story during an hour of direct questioning by her lawyer, Carolyn McNeice.

With SpeedWeeks approaching, max manpower at Daytona Rising
Daytona Rising.  What is rising, except ticket prices to pay for it?  It's a new facade job
The $400 million Daytona Rising project has a timeline that suggests marathon, but the primary contractor is in an all-out sprint to complete a section of the grandstands before Speedweeks 2015.

A growing work force at Daytona International Speedway is putting the finishing touches on the western-most area of the new grandstands near Turn 1, an area that could hold up to 40,000 race fans for events in January and February.

On Wednesday, 1,002 workers - the highest head count since the project started 16 months ago - were at the Speedway.

The gigantic construction project - which is scheduled to be completed for Speedweeks 2016 - is cited in ManpowerGroup's Employment Outlook Survey as a primary reason the Deltona metropolitan statistical area (Daytona Beach is included in this area) ranks third nationwide for growth in 2015.

Daytona Int'l Speedway Names UNOH Its Educational Partner
Daytona Int'l Speedway today named the Univ. of Northwestern Ohio its first-ever Official Educational Partner, providing UNOH with on-site marketing presence, including event signage, display space, tickets and hospitality. Financial terms of the multi-year agreement were not disclosed. UNOH had been a title sponsor of DIS' Battle of the Beach, but discontinuation of the event beyond this year left both parties searching for a way to maintain their mutually beneficial relationship.

DIS President Joie Chitwood said, "It's nice when you can find those relationships and you keep them, even when you change the focus from year to year." UNOH in '92 invented the first high-performance degree program in the U.S. and in '06 opened the largest U.S. facility dedicated to learning the science of high-performance vehicles, allowing students to receive first-hand motorsports mechanical training. Kurt Busch's ex-girlfriend calls him alcoholic, depressed
Patricia Driscoll (L) and Busch
Kurt Busch's ex-girlfriend, Patricia Driscoll, said the NASCAR driver struggled with alcoholism and depression and flew into a fit of unprovoked rage the night he allegedly attacked her, according to the Associated Press.

In an emotional testimony in a Dover (Del.) courtroom, Driscoll broke down crying during her six hours on the witness stand, necessitating a recess. Busch's attorney, Rusty Hardin, characterized Driscoll in court as a public relations expert determined to ruin Busch's career following a messy breakup of their four-year relationship, according to the Wilmington News Journal.

During her testimony, Driscoll said Busch was critical of his Stewart-Haas Racing team, called them "idiots" and said he would not re-sign with the organization after his two-year contract expired.
