Rockingham NC Speedway to be sold again (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Owners have yet to announce a sale or auction of Richmond County's NASCAR track following a Thursday deadline for the court-ordered deal. Superior Court Judge David Lee's Oct. 14 consent order required Rockingham Speedway owners Andy Hillenburg and Bill Silas to "enter into a binding agreement with a third party for the sale or other disposition" of the track by Jan. 1 in order to avoid foreclosure. No new documents have appeared in the case file since Dec. 15, and it remained unclear Friday whether Hillenburg and Silas had met the New Year's Day deadline. Lee's order does not require that a sale or auction agreement be on file with the Richmond County Clerk of Superior Court's office by a specific date. A Friday phone message left for Hillenburg was not returned in time for this story. Richmond County Daily Journal

Rockingham Speedway is a ghost town now
12/30/14 Owners have three days to sell the historic Rockingham Speedway or agree to auction off the property in order to avoid foreclosure. The clock is ticking on Superior Court Judge David Lee's October consent order, which set a Thursday deadline for the signing of a sale or auction agreement on the former NASCAR track.

The speedway must change hands or go on the auction block by March 15. Unless a last-minute extension is granted, the Oct. 14 consent order calls for a sale or auction agreement to be signed on New Year's Day. As of Monday afternoon, no legal filings in the case had been added since October, according to the Richmond County Clerk of Superior Court's office. Co-owner Andy Hillenburg said in October he hopes to bring racing back to the Rockingham Speedway with the help of the as-yet-unnamed group of investors.

Romain Dumas Heads Up Sportscar Star List for 2015 Dakar Rally
The rally starts tomorrow in Buenos Aires and takes in 9000km through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, concluding back in the Argentine capital on 17 January.

Dumas is undertaking the challenge, his first Rally Raid, to raise awareness and funds for the Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque Association:

"When I was presented the project by Pascal Thomasse, I have to say that I didn't hesitate. It's a new sporting challenge for me, and for a good cause. I'm excited about the association. Racing to benefit children with heart issues and help promote Mecenat Heart Surgery is obviously a win-win. The will to fight and solidarity are two important values in my eyes and I will do my very best to make them proud.

Honda Bike Team: Let the show begin!
The 9,300 km route
And off we go…. In less than forty-eight hours, the Argentine air will reverberate to the chorus of motorcycle engines, as the Dakar Rally roars into life. Team HRC, meanwhile, has successfully passed the scrutineering that precedes the event.

The 2015 edition of the Rally Dakar will fire up on January 4, the day after tomorrow, with a first stage setting out from Buenos Aires and concluding in Villa Carlos Paz. These will be the first of more than 9,300 kilometers to be overcome before the race finally winds to a close. But first, prior to taking up positions on the starting-line, all administrative and technical checks had to be fully completed. Once the vehicles had been picked up from the port of Buenos Aires, it was straight off to the scrutineering for Team HRC’s riders, assistants and the Honda CRF450 RALLYs. All passed the obligatory inspections without any hitches.

The squad is good to go. And it should be too, after a 2014 season in which all components of Team HRC strove throughout training, testing and competitions to get to the event at the highest possible level. With just two days until the chronometer begins to adjudicate the fastest of the race, both riders and bike are now ready to roll.

Tomorrow, Saturday, sees the symbolic start of the 2015 edition of the Rally Dakar, which for the first time heads out from Casa Rosada – one of the best known spots in the country's capital. In the morning, both Team HRC and Honda South America Rally Team, with all their riders, will be officially presented.

Yamaha bike team ready for Dakar 2015
Olivier Pain does trial run to get ready
With just a few hours before the 2015 Dakar gets under way the whole Yamaha team came together in Buenos Aires to go through scrutineering prior to the start early on the morning of January 4. The tension is palpable but morale in the Yamaha camp is high. After months of preparation the countdown to ultimate test of man and machine has begun.

Olivier Pain
"For sure, with us moving into the assistance parc with all the other teams and going through scrutineering, the tension goes up a little. The start is only a few hours away now and you can feel the anticipation. The nice thing about the Dakar though is that it really is like a big family. We spend a lot of time together and share something very intense and that creates strong friendships. Plus of course this isn't circuit racing, it isn't a contact sport, essentially we are racing against the clock not each other. Obviously there is some rivalry but, for me at least, my biggest challenger is myself and the mental battle I have to stay focused and not make any mistakes. Then comes the desert, which must be treated with respect, and which is always a serious adversary."

F1 teams can develop engines during 2015
Mercedes' rivals Ferrari and Renault pushed hard in late-2014 for F1's engine freeze to be eased to give them more time to introduce much-needed upgrades, rather than having to complete all changes to a pre-season deadline. But with Mercedes standing firm and refusing to concede much ground, it appeared that Ferrari and Renault's hopes of extra time were dashed.

However, the situation changed dramatically when it was suggested to the FIA that the engine rules did not actually stipulate when a final engine had to be lodged for 2015. Although the FIA had always been under the impression that new engines would have to be homologated for the first race, this was never explicitly laid down in the rules.

An FIA spokesman said: "It was always envisaged, although not explicitly stated in the rules, that manufacturers would have to deal with modifications on the engine within the constraints of the rules, and then submit their 2015 engine [at the first race]. It is simple, but when you read it [the rule book], it doesn't say that, unfortunately."

Five Reasons why you can't blame Tony George for 'The Split' (Or can you)
Tony George and his famous hat proclaiming to the world that he was Indy
Twenty years ago this summer the Indy Racing League was announced, and the longest labor dispute in organized sports began.

American open wheel racing was dealt a massive blow when then Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Tony George decided to form his own racing series with the Indy 500 as the lone jewel. Imagine if Bruton Smith decided to split with NASCAR, form his own series and ban NASCAR from all of his eight tracks.  That's what Tony George did to the most successful form of racing in America at the time. No sport could survive that sort of competition. It muddied the waters and drove away casual fans, and the sport hasn't recovered six years later. Indy 500 ratings were good this year, but still a third of what they were before Tony George found the Indy Racing League.

When I conceived of this article the idea was to find five reasons why you couldn't blame TG for the split, but I could only come up with one. One reason that I couldn't bring myself to believe. Founding the IRL did more to shift the landscape of a professional sport than any single decision ever made. I could only come up with one reason justifying his actions; he was acting on what he thought was the best interests of the sport. The only argument that makes any sense is that Tony George saw the sellout crowds at his track, ratings that challenged the Super Bowl and the strongest field of teams and drivers outside of Formula One and thought there was something wrong with it.

Marco Andretti joins Vergne at Andretti for Buenos Aires ePrix
Marco Andretti
Marco Andretti will pilot the No. 28 Spark-Renault SRT_01E for the Andretti Formula-E Team during Formula E’s fourth round of competition and first in the new year for the 2014-2015 season. The Argentinian race weekend will see the American complete his first laps in the electric-powered seat.

A nine-year veteran of the Verizon IndyCar Series, Andretti is excited to try his hand at the all-electric series. “I’ve been looking forward to the chance to get behind the wheel of a Formula E car,” said Andretti. “Having never been in the car, it’s a bit of an unfamiliar situation for me but the team’s pace looks solid enough for a great result. I like unknown situations; I’m up for the task.”

The third-generation racer will be the only American competing on the 12-turn circuit at Puerto Madero. Racing alongside the 27-year-old American will be Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne, returning to the Andretti Formula-E Team for his second outing in the Spark-Renault. The Michael Andretti-led team is currently fifth in the championship standings.

RCR Sues former employee and loses
RCR tried to deny Matt McCall's right to work and lost
Richard Childress Racing failed to prove that an engineer who became another team's crew chief stole trade secrets, the North Carolina Business Court ruled. Matthew McCall started working for RCR as a race engineer on the Camping World Truck Series team in 2010. Two years later, RCR promoted him to similar position working on the #31 Chevy in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. McCall's contract included provisions that, if he resigned, he could not work for a competitor in a similar capacity for 12 months.

During the 2014 season, McCall said several times that he would like to work as a crew chief for a Sprint Cup team. When RCR offered McCall a crew-chief spot on the Nationwide Series, NASCAR's second-ranked circuit, he resigned at the end of the 2014 Sprint Cup season. Two days later, Chip Ganassi Racing hired McCall as the crew chief for Jamie McMurray's #1 Chevy on the Sprint Cup circuit.

Still, it was better than what her Stewart-Haas Racing teammate and new Sprint Cup champion Kevin Harvick who did not get a single vote. Danica-1, Harvick-0.  Beaten by a girl.  Ouch.

Tesla Motors Inc. is offering a suite of upgrades to its sporty two-seat roadster, which it no longer sells, giving owners as much as a 400-mile range, enough to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Improved battery technology can provide 31 percent more energy than the original Roadster cells, the company said in a blog posted Friday on its website. Combined with an aerodynamics kit, new tires and improvements to wheel bearings and brakes, range can be increased as much as 50 percent compared with the original Roadster, Tesla said.

The company didn't say what it will charge for the upgrades, which it collectively calls Roadster 3.0.

McLaren-Honda joins call for engine unfreeze
McLaren racing director Eric Boullier told Autosport it is in the best interest of Formula 1 to allow Mercedes' rivals to catch up in the engine department.

"Doing something that will stupidly increase the costs is not what we want to achieve," said Boullier. "But it's a competition and we can change the cars as much as we want.

"Within the regulations, I think engines should be frozen once every manufacturer has been able to develop their engines. If you disallow the competition, then this goes a against the spirit of the sport."

Manor and Caterham remain on 2015 F1 entry list
If Caterham runs next year it will be with their 2014 car and they will be dubbed the official Friday morning track cleaning cars
The FIA has published an updated entry list for next year's Formula 1 season and Manor and Caterham remain on it while Lotus are now also "subject to confirmation".

The initial list was revealed last month with Manor, who competed as Marussia this year, and Caterham also "subject to confirmation" after the two teams went into administration last season.

Marussia have already ceased trading with many of its assets auctioned a few weeks ago, but Caterham are still hoping to find a buyer and compete in the 2015 Championship.

F1 still 'biggest show in town', says Stewart
Jackie Stewart
Jackie Stewart believes that Formula One is still the biggest sport in the world despite the many issues it has endured in 2014.

The 2014 season began with a tide of negative press over the quieter sound brought upon by new engine regulations, with only Mercedes getting fully to grips with the new rules.

The German manufacturer romped to the constructors' championship with world champion Lewis Hamilton and team-mate Nico Rosberg winning all but three races.

Though the pair's title battle did thrill spectators, typically big names such as McLaren and Ferrari were unable to impress, the former struggling despite using Mercedes power.

Lloyds hit by $16m loss over collapse of Marussia F1 team
The Marussia driven by injured Jules Bianchi
Taxpayer-owned Lloyds Banking Group stands to lose more than $16m from the collapse of the Marussia Formula One team, according to its administrators.

Documents from FRP Advisory dated December 18 show that the bank's private equity division, Lloyds Development Capital (LDC), is at the top of a list of more than 200 other creditors who are owed a total of $49m. They are on track to lose all their money as, unlike LDC, their debts are unsecured.

The biggest bill is the $26m owed to Ferrari for supplying engines to the Banbury-based team. Ferrari is followed by British engineering firm McLaren, which is due $11m.

Audi earmarks $29 billion through 2019 to chase BMW's luxury crown
Audi will spend 24 billion euros ($29 billion) to develop technology and expand production, boosting its five-year investment plan by 2 billion euros ($2.44 billion) as it chases BMW for the top spot in luxury-car sales. About 16.8 billion euros, or 70 percent of the total, is earmarked for new models like the Q1 subcompact SUV, the company said Saturday in a statement.

Audi expects to sell a record of more than 1.7 million autos this year.

"We are making large investments in the innovative areas of electric mobility, connectivity and lightweight construction," Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said in the statement.

The brand intends to increase its lineup to 60 models by 2020 from 50. Audi, the No. 2 brand in global luxury-car sales, aims to surpass BMW in deliveries by the end of the decade. The race tightened this year. BMW outsold Audi by just 42,600 cars in the first 11 months of 2014 compared with 54,600 a year earlier.

New CEO wants Sprint in soccer, not NASCAR
You may have heard that NASCAR lost its title sponsor the other day, that telecommunications giant Sprint is pulling out of the draft after the 2016 season. What you may not have heard is one of the reasons why: Soccer. Sprint has a new CEO, and while he's from south of the Mason-Dixon line, it's real far south, farther south than Kannapolis, N.C., or even Hueytown in Alabama. Marcelo Claure is from Bolivia. When he became CEO of Sprint in August, it was agreed by a board of directors and stockholders and such that Claure should eliminate 3,700 jobs and $1.5 billion from departmental budgets.

Sprint's initial agreement with NASCAR was $750 million for 10 years, so that must have seemed like a good place to start, especially if you're a soccer guy and not a car guy. Claure owns a soccer team in Bolivia and is trying to bring Major League Soccer to Miami. His partner is global soccer icon David Beckham. Ain't that a corner kick to the head? "You certainly don't want to lose a sponsor like that," Las Vegas Motor Speedway president Chris Powell said, "but I don't think this is a comment on the business of NASCAR. I think it's more a comment on Sprint's business. That's what I'm seeing from a distance." Las Vegas Review Journal

Gutierrez made Formula 1 debut 'too soon'
Esteban Gutierrez is now a Ferrari reserve driver
Esteban Gutierrez made his Formula 1 debut too soon, according to Ferrari Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene.

Gutierrez joined the Formula 1 grid in 2013 with Sauber but lost his seat at the end of 2014 after enduring a pointless season as the Swiss team struggled.

Gutierrez was announced as Ferrari's new test and reserve driver in mid-December and Arrivabene believes the Mexican youngster will have another chance to prove his worth in the sport.

"He is a driver that made his debut in F1 too soon," Arrivabene said of 23-year-old Gutierrez.

Arrivabene: Vettel has 'experience of winning'
Sebastian Vettel
Ferrari Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene says that Sebastian Vettel brings the 'experience of winning' to a squad which is trying to rebuild after a troublesome 2014 campaign.

Vettel has claimed 39 wins across his Formula 1 career and secured four successive titles for Red Bull between 2010 and 2013, before sealing a switch to Ferrari for 2015.

"Vettel brings with him the experience of winning, he has his four world titles and the enthusiasm to work together," said Arrivabene.

"He certainly wants to make the team grow alongside us. Having said that, even though drivers may be luxury employees they are still employees and they must work together with others.

Racing news tidbits
A few motorsports news and notes on this slow news time of year:

Congrats to Kyle Larson, who is a new dad. Larson's longtime girlfriend, Katelyn Sweet, delivered Owen Miyata Larson on Monday.

Congratulations are also in order for Ty Dillon, who married girlfriend Haley Carey last Saturday. Appropriately enough, the ceremony took place at Childress Vineyards in Lexington, N.C. Dillon will make his Daytona 500 debut in February.

The Korean Grand Prix has been removed from the 2015 Formula 1 calendar, but the schedule still calls for 21 races, a record number for F1. So either the sanctioning body has a mystery race in its back pocket, or the schedule is being shortened to 20 events.

Who has the loudest fans? NASCAR or football?
NASCAR has loud fans and even louder engines, but can it beat the "Beast Quake?" Football, NASCAR and their rowdy, roaring crowds faced off in a head-to-head battle this year to see which sport hits highest on the seismic charts, scientists reported Dec. 18 at the American Geophysical Union's annual meeting in San Francisco. Seattle Seahawks football fans have stomped their way to several "earthquakes," shaking the football stadium so hard that nearby seismometers register tremors. On Jan. 8, 2011, a 67-yard touchdown run resulted in a fan frenzy as powerful as a magnitude-2 quake, now known as the "Beast Quake." The rambunctious fans have also set a Guinness World Record for the loudest crowd roar.

Not to be outdone, this year the Texas Motor Speedway asked seismic experts from Southern Methodist University in Dallas to record the Duck Commander 500 race. It's a typical NASCAR race, with 43 stock cars roaring around a 1.5-mile track and twice the number of fans as a Seahawks game.

Alejandro Agag Christmas message
The Formula E launch in Putrajaya
London | 25 Dec 2014 -- Well, what a year it’s been. It began in Las Vegas showcasing the Formula E car running for the very first time and 12 months later we’re seeing the chequered flag waved on our third successful race in Punta del Este. It’s been a fantastic 2014 and my thanks goes to all our investors, teams, drivers, partners, event operators, the FIA and, of course, our staff for making this happen.

It still amazes me to think that a little over two years’ ago we had nothing. No cars, no teams, no drivers, no circuits, no TV broadcasters and no sponsors. In fact, many people thought Formula E would never take off.

But with a great team, together with the FIA, we knew we had something very special and little by little the series has grown into what it is today - the world's first fully-electric single-seater series.

Eddie Wood says team could go back to full time at some point
Wood Brothers famous No. 21
As Wood Brothers Racing begins its 65th year with Ford Motor Company, owner Eddie Wood says "It's not out of the question at all" that the team could go back to racing full time.

Wood, a guest on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "The Morning Drive" on Tuesday, said the team's new alliance with a fellow Ford organization may mean more races for a group that has at least one NASCAR win in each of the last seven decades. "With this move over to Team Penske, there's a lot of people looking for extra races to get us back to the track more," Wood said.

How Nigel Mansell became a Mitsubishi dealer
Nigel Mansell (C) with his sons graduated from used car salesmen to new cars
Nigel Mansell, 1992 F1 World Champion, is now a fully-fledged Mitsubishi dealer. We paid a visit to his showroom in jersey to find out why

I took him out for a test drive . I think he thought it was a little strange, but he bought the car from us." Nigel Mansell chuckles when he tells us the story of a customer who got more than he bargained for when he bought his Mitsubishi.

You see, car buyers on the island of Jersey can now buy a Mitsubishi from a company with a famous name above the door – the name of 1992 Formula One World Champion and 1993 IndyCar Champion Nigel Mansell. And Nigel may even be on hand to sell it.

NC Supreme Court declines Bruton Smith's incentives appeal
Billionaire bully Bruton Smith out of options
Bruton Smith's $80 million legal fight against Cabarrus County may have run out of track. In a change of heart, the N.C. Supreme Court has declined to rule on the racing magnate's lawsuit that Cabarrus taxpayers owe him tens of millions of dollars in tax breaks for his racing complex in Concord. That decision marks Smith's third defeat in as many court trips dating back to 2012.

The high court's ruling on Dec. 19, however, marks a bit of a reversal: The justices first agreed to hear Smith's challenge of a 2013 ruling by the state Court of Appeals to throw out Smith's suit. But after hearing arguments from both sides in September, the Supreme Court members changed their minds. That means the earlier court decision to throw out Smith's claims stands. The dispute arose in 2007 when Smith, one of racing's most powerful and controversial figures, announced plans to build a drag strip near his Charlotte Motor Speedway. The city of Concord objected, and Smith responded by threatening to move the speedway - and its $420 million annual impact on the local economy - and build the drag way elsewhere.

Montezemolo furious over Marchionne insults
Luca di Montezemolo
It appears that having bitten his lip since being ousted by Sergio Marchionne, former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo has been enraged by comments from his nemesis at Monday's media lunch in Maranello.

Marchionne was heavily critical of the former management and went too far, in the eyes of many in the Italian media. Saying that 2015 would be more or less a right-off, "due to strategic decisions made by others, who are no longer here" has certainly lit the blue touch paper with Montezemolo. This follows some behind the scenes dealings in which the F1 board did not appoint Montezemolo as its new chairman (after the withdrawal of Diageo's Paul Walsh) with some input into that decision by Marchionne.

Arrest warrant issued for NASCAR driver Tyler Walker (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Professional race driver Tyler Walker pleaded guilty Tuesday in 5th District Court to two felony charges and three misdemeanors stemming from a high-speed law enforcement pursuit that began in Southern Nevada and continued for 60 miles past the Utah state line. Walker, whose full name is Timothy Tyler Andrew Walker, appeared in court wearing a black suit and a neatly trimmed haircut, something he was eager to showcase as a dramatic change from the dreadlocks, untucked shirt and long-sleeved flannel overshirt he wore at the time of his arrest.

"It's a big difference, and I feel a lot better, and I'm in a lot better place," Walker said. "I just want to thank everybody who helped me out ... and also apologize to ... everybody who was on the road. And just let everybody know I'm doing everything I can to ... be healthy so this never happens again."

Case of woman who went missing at Talladega ruled homicide
The death of a woman who vanished near the Talladega Superspeedway during October's race weekend has been ruled a homicide, authorities announced. Theresa Benn was reported missing just before 7:30pm on Oct. 19. Benn, who also went by Theresa Andrews, her maiden name, and Theresa Dulaney, her married name, was last seen the predawn hours of that Sunday on Speedway Industrial Drive in Lincoln.

Authorities said Benn was with her husband prior to leaving him behind because she wanted to go to the races and he did not. Crowe said the woman's husband, Kevin Dulaney, told investigators he dropped her off on or near Eastaboga Road about 2:15am that Sunday. He said he last saw her walking toward the track.

Final rehearsal for Team HRC ahead of the Dakar 2015
Honda CRF450 RALLY bike getting ready
The Rally Dakar is all set to get underway in just ten days time in Buenos Aires. Once there, the culmination of nearly 365 days work will be on display, as the riders go in pursuit of the prize at the end of the world’s toughest race. They will take in over 9,000 kilometers of track on the way. Everything has been prepared down to the minutest detail, no matter how insignificant it might seem. To stand a chance of winning the Dakar requires far more than mere training and speed on the track; methodical groundwork and analysis are needed too.

The bikes are already in Argentina after setting off from the French port of Le Havre one month ago, and soon the mechanics will have the Honda CRF450 RALLY ship-shape to embark on the big adventure too.
