Chandhok pulls out of F1
Karun Chandhok
Karun Chandhok has declared he will not race in the 2012 Formula One season and Narain Karthikeyan is still struggling to earn a racing seat. The 2012 Formula One season is set to kick off in about two months from now and there are only two seats available -- one with Hispania and the other with Williams -- which Karthikeyan can try and grab. The two Indian racers are frustrated but can't do much as drivers from small teams require massive financial backing, which neither Chandhok nor Karthikeyan enjoys.

The situation was expected to change a bit after the success of the inaugural Indian Grand Prix but both the racers are expected to spend the 2012 season on the sidelines. Chandhok was with Lotus, to be known as Caterham from 2012, and Karthikeyan, with Hispania, in the 2011 season. While Chandhok could race just once, in the German Grand Prix, Karthikeyan was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo in the second half of the season with the exception of the Indian GP.

Dakar Stage 3 report
Cyril Despres, already a winner in San Juan on the Dakar's last visit in 2010, won again today in the motorcycle category, taking advantage of a major navigational error by Nani Coma to take the overall lead in the general standings. Nani Roma won his 15th stage on the Dakar and his 3rd in the car category. His team-mate Holowczyc, who is starting to make a collection of second places, nonetheless took control of the general standings.

Endurance alone is not sufficient without a little attention to detail. On the Dakar, this point was proved by Cyril Despres, who took command of the general standings and won the day's stage by remaining calm and collected. In terms of performance, his confrontation with Marc Coma for a long time seemed like a game of ping-pong: advantage to the Frenchman by 20 seconds at CP1, then to the Spaniard by 14 seconds after 117 km. The likelihood of a slender victory for one rider or the other seemed to grow as the stage went on.

Another motorcyclist badly hurt in Dakar
A French motorcyclist was in critical condition Tuesday after being found unconscious in remote sand dunes during the Dakar Rally. The rally, one of the most dangerous in motor sports, already has left three dead.

Sebastien Coue apparently crashed during the second stage in western Argentina and was exposed to temperatures above 104 degrees, Teodoro J. Schestakow Hospital said. His body temperature also exceeded 104.

"He entered in critical condition," hospital director Armando Dauverne said. "We don't know how long he was exposed to the sun. Right now he is in intensive care."

Joan Roma of Spain won the third stage while teammate Krzysztof Holowczyc of Poland led overall. Frenchman Cyril Despres captured the motorcycle stage to take first place overall after a navigational error by defending champion Marc Coma of Spain.

Are the Los Angeles car fires an act of 'domestic terrorism? UPDATE City leaders said they hoped a fiery four-day nightmare of more than 50 car and home blazes was at an end following the arrest Monday of a 24-year-old man who was charged with arson.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said police had filed one count of arson of an uninhabited dwelling against Harry Burkhart of Hollywood after taking him into custody following an early morning traffic stop.

The man, Harry Burkhart, 24, was taken into custody without incident around 3 a.m. on Sunset Boulevard on the outskirts of Hollywood, close to a drug store and a gas station. He was charged with arson around 6 a.m. and was being held without bail.

“A serial arsonist has, I believe, been caught,” Sheriff Lee Baca of Los Angeles County, standing in front of a bank of television cameras, said at a news conference attended by a parade of elected officials.

Sheriff Baca called the suspect “perhaps the most dangerous arsonist in the county of Los Angeles that I can recall.”

Not racing, but......you have to laugh
A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services.

He gasps to the operator: "My friend is dead! What can I do?"

The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: "Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead."

There is a silence, then a shot is heard.

The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: "OK, now what?"

Red Bull Junior Team 2012
The 2012 motorsport season will only begin in a few months.  But preparations and tests for the new season are already in high gear – also in the Red Bull Junior Team, the world’s most successful development program in motor racing.

Two Red Bull Juniors made the step up to Formula 1 even before the turn of the year: Daniel RICCIARD(AUS) and Jean-Eric VERGNE (FRA) had won a total of seven titles for the junior team of the Red Bulls in the last few years and will drive for the Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2012.

The Red Bull Junior Team will again compete under the banner of efficiency in 2012, even though this time in less than four new talents have been taken into the team.

In addition to the two “old hands” Daniil KVYAT (RUS) and Carlos SAINZ jun. (ESP), four rookies have been scrutinized and deemed suited during a test in Estoril at the beginning of November will join the team.

The average age in the Red Bull Junior Team has been lowered considerably in 2012, thanks to the following new entries:

Alex ALBON (GBR), b. 23 March 1996, Formula Renault 2.0
Albon has won the most important karting championships the world over as a Red Bull athlete in the last few years – he became world and European champion in the KF3 category, among others.

Callan O’KEEFFE (RSA), b. 6 June 1996, Formula BMW Talent Cup
Three months Albon’s junior and hence the youngest Red Bull Junior in 2012. He will compete in the Formula BMW Talent Cup this year. O’Keeffe was the 2011 British kart champion and runner-up in the KF3 category.

Stefan WACKERBAUER (GER), b. 2 November 1995, Formula Renault 2.0
After a long time waiting another German up-and-coming driver will again join the Red Bull Junior Team. The 16 year old Bavarian is regarded as the biggest talent of the Federal Republic, winning the 2011 Formula BMW Talent Cup.

Lewis WILLIAMSON (GBR), b. 11 Nov. 1989, Formula Renault 3.5 Series
The 22 year old Scotsman ranks among the greatest talents in Britain and has been bestowed several awards owing this performances, for instance the 2010 McLaren Autosport Award and the BRDC Rising Star in 2009. Last year Williamson completed four races in the Red Bull Junior Team – as a replacement driver for Daniel Ricciardo in the World Series by Renault.

The two “old” Red Bull Juniors will compete as follows in 2012:

Daniil KVYAT (RUS), b. 26 April 1994, Formula Renault 2.0
Daniil will be on the starting grid of Formula Renault 2.0 for the Koiranen team just like the year before, fighting for the title.

Carlos SAINZ jun. (ESP), b. 01.09.1994, British F3 championship
The Formula Renault 2.0 champion will cross over to Britain – to the team of Carlin Motorsport in the British F3 championship that three Red Bull Juniors have already been able twin previously: Alguersuari, Ricciardo and Vergne.

NBC Sports Network Won't Be Able To Compete with ESPN
Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco may have been the NBC Sports Network’s only hope.

Versus is out and the NBC Sports Network, or NBCSN, is now in. Their first day with their new name, they’ll be forced to air a hockey documentary. Why? Because they don’t have contracts with leagues like the NFL and NBA to show their games.

And that’s why NBCSN won’t be able to compete with ESPN. Bob Fernandez of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported what exactly the channel will offer sports fans.

Programming this first year will lean heavily on the Olympics, 38 regular-season Major League Soccer games, 13 IndyCar Series races (13? plus 5 on ABC = 18 races in 2012?  Not happening), 14 hours a day of Tour de France coverage for most of July, 90 regular-season NHL games along with 50 NHL playoff games, 20 hours of horse-racing coverage around the Triple Crown, and 40 college football, basketball, and hockey games.

Nascar Targets New Audiences, Revs Up Social-Media Strategy
Steve Phelps
Steve Phelps
After a few bumpy years marked by declining TV ratings and weakened traction in the vital 18- to 34-year-old male demographic, Nascar regained some footing in 2011. TV viewership rose year-over-year in all three Nascar series, both overall and among the target group of young men. And the sport landed several key sponsorship renewals, including Sprint, UPS and Kraft Food.

But if Nascar is to continue its assault on the professional team sports occupying much of the nation's bandwidth, it needs to reach new audiences in new places. With that in mind, it has embarked on a five-year plan with five key goals: Build the star power of individual drivers, increase engagement among children and college-age consumers, attract a multicultural fan base, craft more cohesive digital- and social-media strategies and improve the racetrack experience for fans.

New Red Bull to be an evolution
Adrian Newey  is viewing Red Bull's 2012 car as an evolution of his previous three cars, despite changes to the regulations.

Since Formula One's aerodynamic regulations were given an overhaul in 2009, Red Bull has produced race winning cars each season and won championships in 2010 and 2011. Key to its success has been its evolution of a successful design over the past three years and a main feature of those cars has been the exhaust blown diffuser. In 2012 exhaust blown diffusers will be banned, but Newey says that will not mean a change of tack for RB8.

"It's still an evolution," he told ESPNF1. "The changes for next year are principally a ban on exhaust blown diffusers and a change to the nose height. I don't feel that that means you have to have a wholesale change of the underpinnings of the car. So RB8 will be the fourth generation of the car that started off as RB5."

Stewart wins again
Tony Stewart
With 56 minutes to spare, Tony Stewart squeezed yet another victory into a year that already was reaching mythical proportions. Taking the checkered flag at 11:04 p.m. on New Year's Eve, the three-time NASCAR champion completed a weekend sweep of the 14th annual Rumble in Fort Wayne indoor midget races, winning Saturday's 50-lap feature in dominating fashion. While he celebrated with a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon, not champagne, Stewart seemed to treasure his latest accomplishment as much as his hard-fought Sprint Cup title.

"This is the first time I've ever raced on New Year's Eve," the 40-year-old Indiana native said, a smile creasing his face. "It's been a dream year. I won by first World of Outlaws race and the (NASCAR) championship. Then I won at Conseco (in an all-star kart race in Indianapolis) and won here two times. What a great way to finish the year. It's going to be hard to keep this up, but it's going to be a lot of fun trying."

Dover International Speedway in Delaware is hoping to make race fans' experience a little more comfortable by widening seats in the track's outdoor grandstands.

The speedway announced Thursday that the process of increasing seats from 18 inches to 22 inches will start next year and will be complete by 2014.

Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports, says the widening comes in response to fans' suggestions. The change will reduce the capacity of the speedway from 140,000 to 113,000, which will save the embarrassment of all those empty seats at its NASCAR races.

Rossi (not that Rossi): I'm getting closer to F1
Alexander Rossi - not to be confused with Valentino Rossi
American youngster Alexander Rossi is confident that he is on course to secure a race-seat in Formula One in the future.

The American enjoyed a profitable 2011 in which he came in third in the World Series by Renault and had a run out for Team Lotus (now Caterham) in the Abu Dhabi young driver's test in November.

While the 20-year-old is yet to confirm his plans for 2012, he believes that his hard work over the years is starting to pay off.

"Since 10 years old when I was given my first opportunity to race in karts, my passion, drive and determination has always been the same: to make and succeed in F1. I've made the most of every opportunity that I've been fortunate to have and I'm continually reminded of the large number of people that include investors and sponsors that believe in me, who have also sacrificed so much for me to be where I am today," Rossi is quoted as saying by Crash.net

Tony Stewart captures Fort Wayne auto race
It is nice to know that despite ending Jimmie Johnson's domination of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and winning his third series title this past season, Tony Stewart still hasn't changed his outlook on certain things.

“Those of you who cheered, thank you,” said Stewart after winning his record eighth event at the Rumble in Fort Wayne on Friday night at the Memorial Coliseum Expo Center. “Those of you who booed can kiss my ass.”

Yes, it was the same old Stewart on Friday, who outdistanced the competition in the midget feature to earn the victory in a 20-year old Volkswagen-powered Munchkin that was built more than 20 years ago by Roanoke resident Mike Fedorcak. Since 2004, Stewart has stuck with the Munchkin at the Rumble and has won seven times.

City officials have terminated the contract of the troubled group that organized the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix race and are seeking a new group to run the open-wheeled racing festival in the coming year, the mayor's office announced Friday.

The city ended Baltimore Racing Development's five-year contract because the company failed to meet the terms of the agreement, including paying a race fee and admissions and amusement taxes, officials said. The racing group owes the city more than $1.5 million in taxes and fees — a fraction of the group's $12 million in debts.

Kahne had No Reason to Apologize UPDATE
Kasey Kahne
A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, Since Kasey Kahne seems to have a problem with a woman's bare breast I suspect we'll never see Hooters sponsor his race car.  Mike Neubauer

12/30/11 This story is in regards to the 'Breast-gate' article we broke yesterday on our Home page.

Once again in our politically correct world a sports star has to apologize after an exchange on Twitter. Yes Kasey Kahne shouldn’t have lashed out with a twitter response to an ignorant comment from an anonymous twitterer, but having his sponsors apologize for his opinion on breast feeding in public was absurd! Have we gone so far off the politically correct ledge that any comment from anyone on any subject that has its own rooting section needs to be instantly apologized for? Kasey Kahne had no reason to apologize for having an opinion.

Getting You Abreast of the Situation

In case you have been in a NASCAR holiday coma I will recap the breast story. Kasey Kahne was in a grocery store and witnessed a woman openly breast feeding her baby. Kahne tweeted, “Just walking though supermarket. See a mom breast feeding little kid. Took second look because obviously I was seeing things. I wasn’t!” This caused a bit of an uproar on Twitter with one person calling him a “Douche Bag.” Kahne returned fire calling the lady on Twitter a “Dumb Bitch.” This story got picked up by ESPN and all of the major news organizations and quickly Kasey Kahne issued an apology.

Versus to become NBC Sports Network UPDATE
The NBC Sports Group launches the NBC Sports Network at 4 PM ET on January 2nd to replace Versus, which had been Comcast’s bullriding and gunshooting and cycling channel pre-NBC Universal merger. The new strategy is to bring all four tiers of NBC Sports Group’s assets (broadcast network, two national cable networks, 11 regional sports networks and digital) into “a consistent framework of branding”.

Notice there is no mention of IndyCar in all of this, which underscores how little they think of the series.

The better to compete with Disney’s ESPN and Fox Sports. The NBC Sports Network will serve as a 24/7 cable platform, according to Jon Miller, the president of programming for NBC Sports and the NBC Sports Network: “We have three tranches of programming that we’re looking to put on NBC Sports Network starting with live events, live games, and big-league relationships.

Nicky Hayden
Nicky Hayden’s winter vacation was marred on Tuesday, December 27, when he broke his left scapula and fractured two ribs while training near his home in Owensboro, Kentucky.

He underwent an X-ray and CAT scan on the same day he was injured, and he has since undergone an MRI. Todt thinks Massa can recover
Jean Todt
Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt expects current team driver Felipe Massa to bounce back in 2012. The Brazilian has endured two relatively tough seasons with the Maranello squad, following on from his violent crash in Hungary over two years ago.

The now FIA President believes Pirelli’s 2011 tires sparked the 30-year-old's struggles, but is confident that a change in fortunes will be enjoyed next year.

"He struggled with the transition to Pirelli tires, but he is still a good driver and will recover," Todt explained to Italy’s Corriere della Sera. "Alonso is the point of reference not just for him but for everyone. Felipe was three tenths away from him, not three seconds."

AMP returns to #88 at Martinsville UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I don't get it. A winner like Matt Kenseth can't get a sponsor and a loser like Dale Jr. has them standing in line.  Tim DeCesaro

Dear Tim, Dale Jr. isn't the only backmarker flush with sponsorship in racing.  There are many others.  That is what degrades the sport and brings it down.  In stick and ball sports either you produce, or you are out.  In racing, either you bring a big check or you are out.  So we ask, is racing still a sport, or just a marketing endeavor to bring in cash?  Perhaps American motorsports should be moved off the sports page and onto the Hollywood gossip pages. There was a time when the best drivers/athletes were the heroes of the sport. Us old-timers find it disheartening, while we watch the sport degrade. Look at IndyCar - for years they hung their hat on Danica Patrick. While she brought in a lot of money for herself based on her good looks, what did it do to grow IndyCar racing?  And now she is gone to NASCAR.  IndyCar's primary marketing scheme for years just walked out the door.  Along with the loss of popular Dan Wheldon, IndyCar is in search of a new marketing angle on which to hang its hat.  Let's hope the best drivers get the publicity they deserve, and that starts with sponsorship activation that includes the drivers.  If that is not written into the engine manufacturer contracts, IndyCar has already missed the boat - a golden opportunity lost.  Mark C.

12/29/11 Dale Earnhardt Jr. is scheduled to run a green AMP Energy paint scheme on the #88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy at Martinsville in April and supposedly run a slightly different version for three races later in the season. AMP Energy has been the primary sponsor for the #88 since Earnhardt Jr. started driving the car. In 2012, the #88's primary sponsors will be Diet Mountain Dew and the Army National Guard. Jayski

Baltimore Grand Prix takeover plans stalled as deadline looms
As a deadline set by city officials draws near, leaders of the beleaguered company that organized the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix have yet to finalize plans for restructuring the business or paying debts to the city.

City officials gave Baltimore Racing Development an ultimatum nearly two months ago: Make the company solvent and draft a plan by Dec. 31 to pay nearly $1.5 million to the city or lose the rights to organize the three-day racing festival. But a deal to cede control of the company to a wealthy investor appeared stalled Wednesday.

While shareholders have approved a deal to give control of the company to former Goldman Sachs and Constellation Energy executive Felix J. Dawson, only two of the racing group's five managers have approved the move, those briefed on the agreement said. A third manager's approval is needed for the deal to go through.

Ganassi warns against more non-US IndyCar races UPDATE Correction: Although Target has offices in 40 countries, they have no stores in China.  It's 1700 stores are in the USA.  Target Australia is not run by the Target Corporation (all of the stores in the US). The chain in Australia is actually owned by Coles Myer, which has the rights from Target Corporation to use the trademark bull’s-eye logo and Target name. Target Corporation has never operated any stores outside of the United States.

Chip Ganassi - When in doubt, follow the money.  In Target Ganassi has a domestic sponsor who also has many stores in China and should welcome a more global reach
Team owner Chip Ganassi has cast doubt on whether the IndyCar Series should be looking to add more rounds outside the United States in the future.

"One race offshore is fine, adds a little bit of caché or whatever, but I don't think we want to get three, four, five races outside the country," said Ganassi at a media teleconference just before Christmas. "I'd have to say that's going to start to have a detrimental effect on the series."

Ganassi was talking ahead of the publication of the 2012 calendar, which included as expected a maiden race in China to replace the series' long-time flyaway destination of Motegi in Japan. With two races in Canada and another in Sao Paulo (with a second Brazil race strongly rumored to be under discussion), Ganassi felt that the series had reached its limit.

Penske last chance for Allmendinger
Allmendinger went from being a winner to being a loser when he joined NASCAR.  Can he prove his worth now?
AJ Allmendinger has 152 career Sprint Cup starts with just four top-five and 26 top-10 finishes.

That might not seem like much in five years, but that virtually is Allmendinger’s entire experience in a stock car. He has 13 truck and eight Nationwide starts in his career, so in many ways the 30-year-old driver should just be finding his footing after making the switch from an open-wheel season where he won five Champ Car races to NASCAR.

Those victories in the open-wheel ranks, where Penske Racing is far more accomplished than in its stock-car endeavors, gave the Penske brass confidence that Allmendinger has the potential to be successful in Cup.

INDYCAR backs Clauson at Chili Bowl
USAC champion Bryan Clauson hopes to achieve his goal of racing in the Indianapolis 500 next May, but INDYCAR will have a hand in helping him try to scratch another goal of his racing achievements – winning the Chili Bowl.

Clauson will carry INDYCAR’s colors on his No. 39c midget car as part of Tony Stewart Racing’s “Team of Champions.” Stewart, a former IZOD IndyCar and current NASCAR champion, will field Clauson’s car along with co-entrants Corey Tucker Racing (CTR)/Bryan Clauson, Inc. (BCI)/Curb-Agajanian Racing.

“The support from INDYCAR over the last year has meant a lot,” Clauson said. “Obviously growing up around the 500, I know that the INDYCAR name carries a lot of weight, so to have an organization like that behind you is a great feeling. I think what INDYCAR has done over the last year and is continuing to do in 2012 with building their grassroots connections has been phenomenal. What better way to continue that then being a part of the biggest short track midget race in the country.”

New turbo-powered V6s sound right for IndyCar
If Tony George had not destroyed IndyCar racing by creating the IRL, IndyCar under CART would have always used turbocharged engines.  So this notion that IndyCar is now going to turbo engines is hypocritical.  Let's call a spade a spade.  Given Tony George set the sport back 25 years, he should be run out of the paddock and never allowed to return.  CART was twice as big as NASCAR in the early 1990s before George stepped in and destroyed it all.
The prospect for the 2012 IndyCar season and the Long Beach Grand Prix is accompanied by an aggressive growl.

After a few years of the diminished Dallara/Honda engines, which sounded at best like a small swarm of young bees, the ferocious sound of turbocharged engines will return to Long Beach.

Put in your special orders for earplugs now.

This is a good thing for anyone who remembers the high-powered days of CART and Champ Car, when turbo engines were a standard and provided the kind of power and sound that has always been one of the most appealing parts of the sport.

The new engines will be 2.2-liter V6 turbos that can crank horsepower in the 550-to-780 range, and the new engines will also incorporate a push-to-pass button, the latest gadget that's caught on, that provides a horsepower boost of up to 100, or five times greater than the old push-to-pass.

Go Daddy Internet Ship takes a direct hit
The picture above was released on Twitter by Bob Parsons, the former president of the company and now its Executive Chairman. That is Parsons grinning with Danica Patrick, Jillian Michaels and the new mystery Go Daddy girl during the Super Bowl ad shoot. The picture was removed from Twitter only minutes later.
It's a highly charged political atmosphere these days in the media and the online world is no exception. The "Stop Online Piracy Act" (SOPA) was introduced by West Texas Republican Congressman Lamar Smith back in October.

Click here for a primer from CNET.com on SOPA and the broad-reaching effect it would have on almost every part of the current online environment.

Go Daddy CEO Warren Adelman came out in support of SOPA, a move that motivated a GoDaddyboycott.org website and triggered the movement of over 21 thousand domain names out of Go Daddy before Christmas. Click here for that story.

While the current total of around 40 thousand domains departing is not even a blip on the 40 million or so domains registered on Go Daddy, there is one stat that does make a difference. Part of the key to the company is the continuing registration of new domains and that may be the most affected.
