Kalkhoven Joins Board of Rocket Racing League
LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Bringing the experience of racing and the knowledge of advanced technology to the competition of rocket-propelled race-craft, entrepreneur Kevin N. Kalkhoven has joined the board of the Rocket Racing League™ (RRL). The RRL is a first-of-its-kind aerospace sports and entertainment league formed by Granger Whitelaw, two-time Indy 500 champion team partner, and X PRIZE founder Peter Diamandis, renowned space travel enthusiast.
Kalkhoven, a qualified commercial pilot that also flies jets himself, has been recognized as one of America's Top 50 CEOs by Worth Magazine. As a co-owner of the Champ Car World Series and owner of PKV Racing within the league, Kalkhoven is intimately familiar with racing and the operation of an international racing league. In January of 2004, Kalkhoven, along with fellow team owners Paul Gentilozzi and Gerald Forsythe, purchased the assets of CART to ensure the future of the Champ Car World Series and has continued to support the advancement of the sport. Kalkhoven also participated in the 2004 X PRIZE Cup. Beyond racing, he has shown success as a venture capitalist and technology enthusiast, having served as CEO and chairman of Uniphase Corporation, a manufacturer of industrial lasers for the fiber optics telecommunications industry. Kalkhoven led the growth and merger of Uniphase with JDS Fitel, taking the company public and growing it from $35 million to $100 billion.
"We are pleased by Kevin's decision to join the Board of the RRL, bringing invaluable hands-on experience to our fledgling league," said Whitelaw. "His experience with racing and his entrepreneurial success with technology is a perfect fit for the RRL. We will be challenged to keep up with him."
Kalkhoven adds, "Racing is a means of advancing technology, whether on land, sea or in space. The RRL is a unique venture with the opportunity to make history in both sports and technology. I look forward to the contributions that I can make to this new 21st century sport."
