Meira debuts innovative driving suit When OMP Racing introduced the conceptually new Monoposto suit at the 2006 PRI Show, many wondered if the product was really going into production or if it was just a “runway” item. Monoposto is a lightweight motorcycle inspired suit specifically designed for single seater and sportscar drivers. A three-layer suit (350 gr/m2) Monoposto holds both FIA 8856-2000 and SFI 3.2A/5 homologations.
The suit structure is kept together by a series of elasticized sections including a large horizontal band on the waist, which substitutes the traditional belt. The suit is ‘vertically quilted’ instead of ‘box quilted’ and SOFY DRY® treated for a quicker release of body heat.
The general concept behind the creation of the Monoposto is to provide drivers with a product that is closely fitted to the body in order to eliminate the excessive Nomex® material that drivers usually fight with once in the cockpit. The suit provides the following main advantages
Avoids the formation of awkward bulges on the chest and by the waist while in driving position;
The stretched fit adds comfort when the driver is strapped into the car.
In brief, Monoposto offers an improved comfort throughout and an overall lighter feel.
The Monoposto idea was suggested to us by a variety of OMP drivers that requested superior comfort while strapped in the car. The project has been studied and developed by OMP’s technical department, which took approximately 15 months. Moreover, the Monoposto will continue to evolve, as more professional drivers will continue to provide us with valuable feedbacks, and OMP America is proud to collaborate with Vitor Meira and Panther Racing on this development project.
“When I first saw the Monoposto prototype last fall at OMP’s Head Quarters in Miami I was puzzled, but as the show item was close to my size I tried it on with curiosity.” said Vitor Meira driver of the Delphi number 4 Panther Racing entry. “It wears differently, comparable to normal clothing. Comfort on the important areas is what impressed me most and I’m looking forward to testing the suit and providing feedback to OMP.”
