A gutted Ron Dennis goes home empty handed

Ron Dennis

A gutted McLaren boss Ron Dennis admitted it was hard to put his disappointment into words, but conceded Lewis Hamilton’s problem had cost him the title despite its bullet-proof reliability record up until that point.  Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen beat both of his drivers to the world title by a single point in Brazil.  His team also lost the constructors title to Ferrari over the Spygate saga.

“In difficult moments like this you have just got to have a sporting attitude to the outcome,” he told ITV Sport’s Steve Rider.

“We have enjoyed phenomenal reliability from our two cars this year, but a default criteria in the gearbox selected neutral for a period of time and then it sorted itself out.

“We think we gained over 10 seconds by switching him to a three-stop strategy, so we are very sure that that was a positive thing to do.

“But it was so close – we just needed one car to stop and then we would have been in with a fighting chance.

“It is hard to find the right words, but I think the whole team has done a good job the whole year and should be proud of their achievements.

“In the end, Ferrari suffered their reliability problems at the beginning of the season and we have just had some today.

“But it’s not about one race, its about the world championship and we have got to be positive and sporting and look forward to next year.”

“I think if you give me a couple of minutes to recover, we will start turning to next year,” he said.  "But of course, we are a competitive team and we want to fight on the circuit.

“It has been very challenging for lots of reasons.

“But as we said, this is a sport and we will be sporting about it – we have done a good job but it just came as at the wrong time.”
