Team Brazil has taken the surprise choice of recalling two of its former drivers for this weekend’s meeting in South Africa.
Bruno Junqueira and rookie Alexandre ‘Xandi’ Negrao will form the team’s driver line-up in South Africa this weekend.
Junqueira, who made his name in American open-wheel racing drove in six races for the team last season – but crucially, one of them was the unforgiving Durban street circuit in Brazil. He finished seventh in the Feature race at the circuit last season, and his experience could prove vital.
Junqueira’s last outing in an A1GP car was during the official pre-season test at Silverstone.
‘I’m looking forward to Durban and competing in A1GP again,’ Junqueira said. ‘I raced in Durban last year so at least I know the track, although it’s been a long time since I last drove the car. Last year went reasonably well, but this year we have a more competitive car and team so I hope we can get onto the podium. I’m ready to go.’
Negrao was rookie for the team in Brno, Czech Republic last season, and will get another chance to be a part of the squad at this weekend’s street races. The 22-year-old has tasted success in other formulas, being South America Formula Three champion in 2004 and a podium finisher in GP2 last year.
Sergio Jiminez has been racing for the team so far this season, with a best result of third in the Malaysian Feature race.
