18 year old French born racer Richard Philippe will join Carlin Motorsport for the team’s first season of Formula 3 Euro Series this season.
The 2005 Formula BMW USA champion, who has previously competed in Champ Car Atlantics and Renault World Series, is the first Euro Series driver to be announced by the British F3 championship winning squad. Having started karting in Argentina at the tender age of eight, the Miami based driver moved into formula racing in 2005 when he competed in the Formula BMW championship.
Having impressed the experts at BMW, the Frenchman was awarded a Formula BMW USA scholarship.
Philippe lived up to expectations, recording five pole positions, seven podiums and three race wins to not only become Formula BMW USA Rookie of the Year, but overall champion as well. In 2006, Philippe moved up to Champ Car Atlantic and became the youngest ever driver to take a podium in the championship when he finished second at Cleveland.
2007 saw a move to World Series by Renault, but two broken hands severely compromised his season. Now making the move to Formula 3 Euro Series, Philippe joins Carlin Motorsport, who are the most successful team in British F3, having won 79 races and three championships. Speaking about his plans for the 2008 season, Philippe said, “I’m very excited and happy to be joining Carlin for F3 Euro Series this season.
This marks a new chapter in my career, one that is unavoidable to reach the highest form of motor sport in the world and I’m pleased to be working with such a well-known and prestigious team. “F3 Euro Series is a very competitive championship and as a new driver and team to the championship we will have a lot to learn very quickly, nevertheless I believe before long we will be running at the front.” Team Principal Trevor Carlin added, “I’m delighted that Richard has chosen to race with Carlin in our first year in F3 Euro Series.
The competition level for both teams and drivers is extremely high, but I’m sure together we will make great progress and surprise some of the regular teams before the end of the year.” Carlin Motorsport and Richard Philippe will make their F3 Euro Series debut at Valencia from 15 – 16 March at the first official test of the season.
