Jeff Gordon led the way in the second day of Sprint Cup testing on Wednesday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, notching the fastest speed of the two-session as teams gear up for next month’s Bank America 500.
Gordon’s wheeled his Chevrolet to top speed of 187.233 mph was the fastest among the over 50 teams that took part in the two day session, besting Greg Biffle’s top speed in Tuesday night’s session of 185.605 mph.
Red Bull Racing's Scott Speed, who will apparently replace AJ Allmendinger in the team's No. 84 car next year, was second fastest for the second straight evening, posting a speed of 186.638 mph, followed by the Toyota of Denny Hamlin at 186.599 mph. Dodge pilots Juan Pablo Montoya (185.957 mph) and Elliott Sadler (185.790 mph) rounded out the top five.
Gordon, the defending winner of the Bank of America 500, is still in the hunt for his fifth series title, holding onto ninth place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings. Pete McCole reporting from Lowe's
