Tiago Monteiro's team signs Buurman Ocean Racing Technology has just guaranteed the team's first ever driver. Young flying Dutchman Yelmer Buurman will take one of the seats next week in Dubai, at the team’s premiere.
The 21 year old has already given a taste of what he is able to do in several racing categories. Last week, Buurman took second place overall in the Superleague Formula driver's championship. Before defending PSV Eindhoven's colors the new Ocean's driver raced for Arden in the GP2 Asia Series and Main Series.
Tiago Monteiro has been following Yelmer Buurman's career:
"I see him as a great driver with very good potential and he really fits this project. His fast and has already a good experience in single seaters. Also, he is very motivated and has a hardworking profile. It's the kind of personality Ocean Racing Technology needs".
José Guedes also shows a great deal of confidence on the driver:
"Yelmer is very reliable. He had an outstanding performance in Superleague Formula, he showed how to take the best out of a new car with a lot of work to be done. He also had a quick adaptation the first time he took a GP2 seat, as well as in the World Series. He is the kind of driver we are looking for at Ocean Racing Technology and I am positive he will fit perfectly well in our structure."
In this return to the GP2 Series, the Yelmer Buurman promises to work hard to keep the seat:
"I would like to thank Tiago for getting a new chance in GP2 after my successful season in Superleague Formula with PSV. My first races in GP2 Asia last year were quite good. In Dubai I finished on the podium and I hope to repeat this performance with Ocean Racing Technology. It is exciting to race for this brand new team and I will do my best to impress Tiago and José Guedes enough to stay in his team as one of the race drivers for 2009. Tiago Explained me his ideas and plans and I am convinced the new team will soon be a frontrunner."
Yelmer Buurman will join the team this Sunday in Dubai to meet the Ocean's staff and to have his seat fitting session. In a week's time Tiago Monteiro's and José Guedes's team will have a first taste of the GP2 series in what promises to be a hot start, as Dubai's temperatures are traditionally high.
