Alex Yoong to step away from cockpit
Alex Yoong
Malaysian race car driver Alex Yoong  has decided to take a short break from his first love to concentrate on developing his business activities and the motorsports industry in the country.

The former F1 driver, who races for My Qi-Meritus Mahara in the GP2 Asia Series, said that it was a painful decision to make as he was enjoying driving for the team.

However, finding the time to remain fully committed to the team has become increasingly difficult due to the expansion of his Axle group of companies, which are also motorsports related.

Alex will be replaced by Italian Marco Bonanomi, who will be in the seat for the third round of the GP2 Asia Series at the Sakhir Track in Bahrain from Jan 23-24.

The 23-year-old will partner rookie Earl Bamber for the four remaining races of the season.

“I spoke to Peter Thompson (Meritus team principal) and we have decided to come to an agreement, which is mutually beneficial to all parties,” said Alex.

“I had done some driver coaching with them in the past but to finally get the chance to race with them was a lovely experience.

“GP2 Asia is a fantastic series and very competitive. The team need total focus from their drivers and I was finding this more and more difficult to obligate.”
