Sorenson tops final practice times for 500 Richard Petty Motorsports driver Reed Sorenson led the final NASCAR Sprint Cup practice for the Daytona 500 in a session marred by the crashed of Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. Sorenson, driving the No. 43 Dodge, turned a fast lap of 191.575 mph. Roush Fenway Racing’s Matt Kenseth was second at 191.042, with Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch third at 190.815.
The right-rear Goodyear tire on Newman’s No. 39 Chevrolet exploded, and Stewart slammed into him. Both drivers were forced to backup cars.
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing’s Juan Pablo Montoya was fourth, with Roush Fenway’s Greg Biffle fifth. Sixth through 10th were David Ragan (Roush Fenway), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Hendrick Motorsports), Joey Logano (Joe Gibbs Racing), Jeff Gordon (Hendrick) and Brian Vickers (Red Bull Racing).
The 200-lap race begins Sunday shortly after 3:30 p.m. EST.
