Edwards to compete in the 2009 Montreal NAPA 200 Carl Edwards, one of the most exciting and favored drivers on the NASCAR circuit announced today that he would compete in the NASCAR Nationwide Series NAPA Auto Parts 200, presented by Dodge on August 30, 2009. A fan favorite from the Missouri heartland hometown of Columbia, Edwards will make his third Nationwide visit to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. On the Wednesday prior to the 2007 inaugural NAPA Auto Parts 200, Edwards charmed both the press and the fans when he toured the city's media outlets with Patrick Carpentier. Following his day of work, Carl, who is one of the fittest drivers in the sport, cycled his way through the streets of Old Montreal as part of his daily cardio training.
"Carl is one of the NASCAR stars that did not wait for our event to become a tradition to take part in the race," said François Dumontier, promoter and spokesperson for Stock-Car Montreal. "He showed his enthusiasm from the start, and even though he had a tough day on the track, he quickly became one of the Montreal crowd's favorites. Last year, he proved he had learned of lot from his first experience on circuit Gilles Villeneuve as he came home in sixth place. This year, our fans can reasonably hope to see him do one of his celebratory backflips from his car."
Following the NASCAR races in Talladega last weekend, the driver of the No 60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford Fusion is currently in second place in the 2009 Nationwide Series standings, 62 points behind leader Kyle Busch. Edwards, who secured appearances in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2005, 2007 and 2008, is seventh in the 2009 Cup standings. The Show-Me State driver will make his 150th Nationwide Series start next weekend at Richmond International Raceway. Edwards, who will turn 30, 15 days before the Montreal race, has won 20 Nationwide races, finished 69 times in the Top-5 and 94 times in the Top-10.
"I love Montreal. The people are great. The race is great," said Edwards. "I'm really looking forward to battling with Patrick (Carpentier) again. I'll never forget the fans and racing in the rain. It was the coolest thing. Nobody left - they either put on ponchos or got wet. I'll probably have a windshield wiper this year - one that actually attaches to the car. The city is so great. It's an off-weekend for Cup so my wife (Kate) is going to come and we're going to take time to see the city."
