Button makes it onto rich list
Reigning Champ Jenson Button has broken into the top ten on the Sunday Times Sport Rich List with an estimated £43m.

However, the McLaren driver is by no means leading the way on the motorsport list as first place belongs to Johnny Dumfries, heir to one of Scotland's oldest aristocratic families, and his £190m. Dumfries made a name for himself in motorsport, starting his career as a van driver with Williams Grand Prix Engineering and he even had a brief stint racing for Team Lotus in 1986.

Former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine is Britain's second richest on the motorsport list, followed by Jody Scheckter, Dave Richards, David Coulthard, Nigel Mansell and then Button.

The seven of them dominated the sport rich list with only Dave Whelan, David Beckham and Lennox Lewis flying the flag for other sporting arenas featuring in the top ten.

Dr Philip Beresford, compiler of the list, said: "Motor racing has several factors that combine to make its stars highly rewarded.

"There are big, often global television audiences and vast commercial interests at stake. And unlike football, you only need to pay one or two drivers per team - not 11 or more. For the best drivers that can make salaries and sponsorships huge."

Button, though, did claim one P1 as he topped the Young Sport Rich List ahead of footballer Michael Owen and his own McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who is worth £35m.  Planet F1
