Daly Heads to Spain for GP3 Series MAZDASPEED driver Conor Daly, second-generation formula car racer, will take on the challenging Circuit de Catalunya this weekend, May 20–22 . The international GP3 Series will head to Barcelona to run in support of the Formula One weekend being held at the 2.9 mile (4.6 km) circuit. This marks the second weekend of double-header racing action for the elite single seater series. This is not Daly’s first trip to the famed Barcelona track as the team completed three days of testing on April 12-14, between Daly’s Indy Lights weekends at Barber Motorsports Park and the Long Beach Grand Prix. The GP3 Series features 30 drivers from 16 different nationalities in the 285 bhp 2.0 liter Renault turbo powered open wheel cars.
“I have really enjoyed learning the new circuits. Make no mistake about it, I found Turkey to be very challenging,” comments the GP3 rookie driver. “Tire management is a lot more complex than I anticipated as is the driving style needed. I really didn’t think it would take this long to understand it fully. The team at Carlin has been fantastic.”
Now living in the North London area in England, Daly has been pulling out all the stops to prepare for rounds three and four. This past week he made extensive use of the state-of-the-art Carlin simulator in addition to taking part in a total fitness evaluation with Pro Performance, Surrey, England. The extensive evaluation is part of a season long regiment with programs built specifically for each driver at each event.
“The off track testing and training has been great,” smiles the 19-year-old driver. “And I’m really excited to have a new teammate in Daniel (Morad). He ran well really well in GP3 last season taking a win at Silverstone. I am very excited to be working with Daniel.”
Following the Barcelona weekend Daly will return to the US to take part in several Indy 500 events. Daly, the current Indy Lights points leader, will be on hand to support the Indy Lights field as they run the Firestone Freedom 100 on May 27th. Current commitments and travel schedule did not permit Daly to take part in the prestigious event, part of the Month of May festivities. Daly will also be hosting a sponsor’s dinner taking place on Carburetion Day, May 27th. Conor Daly PR
