De Silvestro cleared to drive in practice Simona de Silvestro has been cleared this morning to resume racing activities by INDYCAR medical director Dr. Michael Olinger.
De Silvestro was treated May 19 at Methodist Hospital for second-degree burns on the back of her right hand and superficial burns on her left hand and fingertips suffered in a practice crash between Turns 3 and 4 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. She was not medically cleared to drive May 20.
She will have the dressing changed before participating in the 8:30-9 a.m. Group 2 practice and then will be re-evaluated. A second all-car practice is scheduled for 9-10 a.m.. Pole Day four-lap qualifications begin at 11 a.m. The No. 78T Nuclear Clean Air Energy car drew the 58th qualifying position.
Gripping the steering wheel and using the paddle shifters of the car for HVM Racing will be difficult.
“I can move my hands, but it is pretty tight because it pulls the skin,” she said. “It will hurt a lot. Luckily, on an oval it’s not as physical as a road course.”
