Indy Grand Prix weekend at Infineon Raceway starts Friday
The IZOD IndyCar Series makes its seventh annual visit to the Valley with a weekend full of high-speed action on Infineon’s 12-turn, 2.303-mile road course which begins this Friday, Aug. 26, and continues through Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28, when the featured Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma County race takes place.

Along with the 75-lap Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma County – the 13th race on the IZOD IndyCar Series’ 17-race schedule – the weekend will include the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge and Formula Challenge, as well as feature races for the Star Mazda Championship and Historic Grand Prix.

At last Thursday’s IndyCar testing at the Sonoma raceway, defending Infineon Indy Grand Prix champion Will Power (Team Penske) posted the fastest time at 1 minute, 19.04 seconds; followed by former Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma winners Scott Dixon (Target Chip Ganassi Racing) in 1:19.49; and teammate Dario Franchitti (Target Chip Ganassi Racing) in 1:19.60.

Power will attempt to become the first repeat Indy Grand Prix winner in Sonoma, with the IndyCar series having featured six different Infineon champions since 2005, including Power (’10), Dixon (’07), Franchitti (’09), Tony Kanaan (’05), Marco Andretti (’06) and Helio Castroneves (’08).

Infineon’s general admission tickets for the IndyCar Series event costs $10 to $65 for single days, and $65 to $85 for the weekend, and kids ages 12-and-under, as well as parking, are free. Garage passes are available for purchase.

Following the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma County will be Infineon’s final major event, the Classic Sports Racing Group Charity Challenge, which is slated for Oct. 1 and 2.
