Ex-Indy driver Herm Johnson critically hurt in crash Former Indy race car driver Herm Johnson of Eau Claire is in critical condition at a Minnesota hospital following a two-vehicle collision Saturday night north of Baxter, Minn.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Johnson, 58, was driving south on Minnesota 371 when his vehicle turned left into the path of a vehicle driven by Sharalynn Christenson, 21, of St. Paul.
Johnson was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn.
The state patrol said alcohol was detected in Johnson's system.
Christenson was treated at a Brainerd, Minn., hospital and released.
Johnson is an instructor at BIR Performance Driving School in Brainerd and owns a custom painting business.
He raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1982 and 1984.
