Rain in Martinsville UPDATE Rain washed out Sprint Cup practice Friday at Martinsville Speedway. NASCAR had originally scheduled nearly three hours of practice for the Tums Fast Relief 500, but persistent rain kept the Cup cars off the track.
The Camping World Truck Series teams got about 40 minutes of practice on the 0.526-mile oval.
NASCAR rescheduled Cup practice for 8:30-10 a.m. ET Saturday, followed by the original schedule – truck qualifying at 10:40 a.m., Cup qualifying at 12:10 p.m. and the truck race at 2 p.m.
The priority Saturday prior to the truck race will be to get some Cup practice in for the race Sunday. Truck qualifying and Cup qualifying would be sacrificed in order to get in Cup practice.
If Cup qualifying is canceled, missing the race would be Dennis Setzer and Derrike Cope.
The starting order would be based on practice speeds if practice occurs before NASCAR makes a decision to cancel qualifying. The starting order would be based on owner points if NASCAR cancels qualifying before the teams get in their practice.
The National Weather Service predicts an 80 percent chance of rain at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, with it dropping to 50 percent by 11 a.m. and 20 percent by 1 p.m.
The track does not have lights, which means that track activity must end by around 6:30 p.m.
The forecast Sunday is for clear skies.10/28/11 Rain is threatening to cancel all of Friday's on-track activities at Martinsville Speedway, the flat, half-mile track in Virginia that has two NASCAR races this weekend. Friday's schedule includes two Camping World Truck Series practice sessions and two practice sessions for Sprint Cup teams. Both series are scheduled to qualify on Saturday and the Truck Series is scheduled for a 200-lap race Saturday afternoon at 2:15.
The forecast of bad weather proved true Friday morning, when rain moved into southern Virginia shortly after 7 a.m. The first Truck Series practice was delayed even as the afternoon forecast called for deteriorating conditions. The National Weather Service projected a 60-percent chance of afternoon rain and a 100-percent chance of rain Friday night. The forecast for Saturday morning isn't promising but Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon are expected to be clear and cold.
