Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Announces Ferry Service
Fans that want to enjoy the beauty of the Detroit River will be able to take the scenic route to the fastest weekend of the summer with the new ferry service to Belle Isle announced today by the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

As the Grand Prix returns for the first time in four years, June 1-3, event attendees will be able to enjoy a service that has never been offered before in the history of the race in Detroit. The Grand Prix is proud to provide a ferry shuttle service that will run from the Detroit Port Authority, located along Atwater on the Riverwalk, to the Harbormaster Station at Belle Isle Park during race weekend.

The ferry service will begin at 7 am Friday-Sunday and will leave from the Port Authority dock every hour on the hour. The trip to Belle Isle is expected to take approximately 20 minutes and will allow ferry-goers the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque scenery of the Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, Canada riverfronts along the way. Return trips from Belle Isle back to the Port Authority will depart on the half hour from the Harbormaster station, located next to the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle. The ferry, which holds about 70 people, will operate until 9 pm each night of the Grand Prix.

“We’re very excited to offer this unique ferry service to our fans,” said Bud Denker, Chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. “This is a terrific way to experience race weekend – enjoying the beautiful waterfront as you visit Belle Isle for the return of world-class auto racing to the Motor City.”

With no on-island parking available for race attendees during the weekend, the ferry provides another transportation alternative for Grand Prix attendees, in addition to the shuttle bus service that will carry all others on to Belle Isle. The complete 2012 Grand Prix transportation plan is attached here.

The cost of the ferry service will be $10 for a round-trip ticket for adults and $5 for children 12 and under – the same prices as the shuttle bus transportation. Anyone wishing to take the ferry is encouraged to park in the Miller Garage on Renaissance Drive, located across from the Marriott at the Renaissance Center.

Tickets for the ferry can be purchased on the lower level of the Detroit Port Authority Terminal. For more information, contact the Port Authority at (313) 259-5091.
