Hinchcliffe tops opening IndyCar practice in Long Beach James Hinchliffe turned the fastest lap in opening practice for the 39th running of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Hinchcliffe had a best lap of 1 minute, 09.8157 seconds on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn course. Mike Conway, who won the race in 2011 with Andretti Autosport, was second in the No. 17 blu eCigs car for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (1:09.8290) and Takuma Sato was third (1:10.0180) in the No. 14 ABC Supply car for A.J. Foyt Racing.
Simona de Silvestro was fourth and reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion and 2010 Long Beach race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay was fifth.
The session was red-flagged one minute early when JR Hildebrand went into the runoff area.
