Honda powered teams gear up for F1 start
February 2, 2001

BAR Honda 003

BAR Honda continues to set the pace in Spain After last weekend's test that saw Darren Manning and Jacques Villeneuve driving the latest BAR Honda 003 at Barcelona, the Brackley-based team returned to Spain for another three-day test starting on Thursday 1 February. Panis continued his pre-season form by setting the fastest time on the opening day driving the interim BAR Honda 002 chassis that is fitted with many 2001 technical modifications. Villeneuve, meanwhile, clocked up no fewer than 95 laps in the new BAR Honda 003 - the Canadian enjoying excellent Honda reliability as he familiarized himself with the new 2001 chassis.

Jordan Honda encouraged by speed of new EJ11 Jordan Honda also returned to Barcelona late this week to carry out more development work on the team's latest EJ11. The new car was impressive throughout its first true test in Spain between 22-26 February when both Heinz Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli shared the driving responsibilities, and Trulli was again among the pacesetters during Wednesday and Thursday. The Italian covered 89 laps on Thursday and was the fastest driver in a 2001 chassis.

Jordan EJ11

Honda delighted with progress With BAR Honda and Jordan Honda completing useful pre-season testing mileage in Spain, Honda is delighted with the preparation and progress that both of its F1 teams are making.

"The new RA001E engine has performed well in both BAR and Jordan cars," says Kazutoshi Nishizawa, Technical Director of Honda Racing Development. "We have been gathering excellent data from both teams and we are meeting our pre-season targets. We are pleased to have our cars running fast and reliably and it is excellent that both teams have managed to complete race distance simulations with the new cars this week."

Next week - BAR Honda heads to South Africa, Jordan Honda to Valencia BAR Honda heads off to South Africa for a major test at Kyalami - the team is searching for some sunshine and dry conditions to assist further aerodynamic work on the latest BAR Honda 003 chassis. Jordan Honda meanwhile stays in Spain but moves from Barcelona to Valencia for further work on its latest EJ11.
