While in Monterrey, Mexico for CART's season
opener, I had the opportunity to meet Dale Coyne's new Mexican Champ Car
prospects, Ricardo and Roberto González.
Who, you might ask, are the González
brothers? I had the same question when I heard the rumors that
Dale had found two young Mexican drivers that may have the funding to go
Champ Car racing.
If everything goes to plan, Dale Coyne
Racing hopes to be back in Champ Car racing at the Laguna Seca round.
The go/no-go decision will be made in a few weeks. If it's a go,
they will race Lola's with Ford Cosworth power.
Funding comes from the family business in Mexico, and the only holdup, as
I understand it, is their grandfather. He holds the purse strings
and remembers too vividly the deaths of Mexican driving heroes Ricardo
and Pedro Rodriguez and is somewhat reluctant to send his grandsons into
the powerful Champ Car ranks.
Roberto has a
bit more racing experience than his brother. Born in
1976, and holding a degree in Industrial Engineering, Roberto
currently works as a consultant for Booz-Allen & Hamilton
while getting in as much racing as he can.
