Mercedes tire pressure trick
Mercedes finds ways to cheat
Mercedes finds ways to cheat
(GMM)  A trick employed by Mercedes to counter Pirelli's high mandatory tire pressures has emerged.

Earlier, it was suspected that some top teams had found a clever way to reduce the high minimum tire pressures once the car was up and running, thereby boosting laptimes.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport has now published photos of a sophisticated device attached to the four corners of its silver cars prior to the tires being fitted on the Baku grid.

"Next summer I am allowed to call him my husband," Minttu wrote in a blog at the time.

Now, reports in Italy and Spain suggest the very private wedding, with not even his friend and Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel invited, could take place on August 5, in Siena, Italy.

Will Trevor Carlin add an IndyCar team in 2017?
Another great day of racing at Elkhart Lake's 4-mile Road America road course Cathedral. A big crowd is expected here this weekend. Initially it was reported that 100,000 were expected over the 3-day weekend, but now we are hearing reports of bigger numbers. The drivers to a person, said they are extremely happy to be back here.  They absolutely love this track.

Word in the paddock is that Trevor Carlin is eyeing 2017 as a possible good year to move his team up to IndyCar. With the rumor of the series locking down the aero kits for all cars in 2017, next year is viewed as a good time to move up because everyone will be on a level playing field. We hear if they can get enough sponsorship, they are looking at a 2-car IndyCar team while still running their Indy Lights team. Realize that worldwide Carlin Motorsports has about 20 cars running in various series both here and in Europe. They are a major operation.

Overheard at Road America - Friday
Carlos Munoz on track Friday
Carlos Munoz on track Friday

A perfect day weather-wise in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine country and 15,000 to 20,000 fans showed up to watch the IndyCars practice - that's a crowd bigger than every oval track race day crowd on the circuit, sans the Indy 500.

Everyone in the paddock is ecstatic to be back here at Road America.  The confusion is why were they away for so many years? Derrick Walker told us that getting the race back on the calendar was one of the easiest negotiations he ever had. When he sat down with track president George Bruggenthies, Walker  asked him "this is such a great track how come we are not here"? Bruggenthies responded, "we want you here." From there the deal was easy.

Amongst the joyous to be back at Road America were the four Team Penske drivers:

Was Toyota hacked at end of 24 Hours of LeMans? (Update)
UPDATE This rumor is downgraded to 'false'. Toyota says a hose came lose that regulates the turbo and is the reason why the car lost power. We doubt they would admit they were hacked anyway as that would show their systems are not secure.

“Car No. 5 suffered a technical defect on a connector on the air line between the turbo charger and the intercooler, causing a loss of turbo charger control, a Toyota team spokesperson said.

“The team attempted to modify the control settings to restore power and this was eventually achieved, allowing the car to complete the final lap. However, it was achieved too late to complete that lap within the required six minutes.”

Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz have three things in common: they are in top form, and they are each being linked with a 2017 Ferrari seat.

And the third thing they have in common is that they are both firmly under contract to their existing teams.

10-speed automatic could be coming in 2018 Ford Mustang
The F-150 has one, and so does the Chevrolet Camaro. Now it appears the Mustang will also get a 10-speed automatic transmission. By way ofMustang6g.com, a dealership employee spotted the 10-speed in a drop-down menu for Ford's online parts catalog. It suggests the gearbox will be one of the powertrain options in a future Mustang. This information has not been confirmed by Ford, so we can't offer any more details beyond a "yeah probably" hunch. Speculation also posits that the new transmission will find its way to the Mustang for the 2018 model year.

That is the claim of the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, even though the Dutch beer brand explained in Montreal that the Heineken logo would in fact "not be visible on any F1 cars".

But De Telegraaf claims that it was notable that, in the hospitality area of Dutch teen sensation Max Verstappen's team in Canada, "Heineken bottles were already in the fridge".

"They (Heineken) are looking for a strategic partnership with one or possibly two teams," the newspaper added.

Honda and GM exploring joint fuel cell plant
General Motors and Honda consider a partnership to jointly build a fuel cell plant, according to a news report from a Japanese daily.

The hydrogen-powered cars are definitely a cleaner alternative to the battery-electric ones, but the development of such technology has registered a very slow pace, because of steep costs involved. General Motors and Honda are already in partnership to co-develop the next-generation fuel cell system and hydrogen storage technologies, an agreement announced in 2013 aiming then for 2020 as a time frame to put their research into production. A recent report now shows the two automakers are considering jointly building a fuel cell plant to cut costs and to speed up the development. The new time frame is apparently pushed to 2025 at the latest to start the mass production of fuel cells. While working together, the two companies continue to develop their own cars separately, Japan’s Asahi Shimbun daily said.

Haas to run Grosjean in NASCAR (2nd Update)
UPDATE
Romain Grosjean a Good 'Ol Boy?
Romain Grosjean a Good 'Ol Boy?

This rumor is downgraded to 'speculation' today. Haas Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean concedes his hopes of competing in a NASCAR Sprint Cup event will have to be put on hold until next year.

Last month Grosjean declared serious intent of making a guest appearance in the series with the Haas F1 team's sister outfit Stewart-Haas racing. Grosjean recognizes, however, his chances of a drive this year are now limited, with the race at Watkins Glen on August 7, during the F1 summer break, his only realistic possibility.

But with six grands prix over the next eight weekends before the break begins, Grosjean now feels his best opportunity to prepare properly is to wait until next year. "I'm going to two races - Kansas [October 16] and Homestead [November 20] - as a spectator," said Grosjean.

AR1.com was there in 2003 when Champ Car lit the entire track and ran a night race. It was cold that night

As the Verizon IndyCar Series opened up the month of June with a double-header in Detroit, I found myself reminiscing about many fine races held at the Milwaukee Mile writes Frank Santoroski of the Motorsports Tribune.

The venerable one-mile oval first acquired the date after the Indianapolis 500 in 1949, and the tradition carried on until the open-wheel split in 1996. The CART series maintained the early June date after the split, although their competitors were not running at Indianapolis.

The track, located within Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis, had a near-death experience in 2009 when it was announced that no professional races would be held in 2010. Financial reasons were cited, the track offices were closed and the entire staff laid off.

IndyCar/Indy 500 not for sale, or is it?
We have repeatedly heard from IndyCar CEO Mark Miles that IndyCar and the Indy Speedway are not for sale, despite rumors to the contrary. Was it to sample some local Indiana food like Persimmon Pudding, Snickerdoodles (an Indiana Amish specialty) and Sugar Creme Pie, or was it to research in preparation for a proposal to buy it all?  The only key person missing was Lesa France Kennedy - the chief executive officer of International Speedway Corporation and a member of the board of directors of NASCAR. Perhaps she stayed behind to start the preparation.

Despite Norway's status as one of the world's primary oil exporters , members from both the left and the right side of the political spectrum worked together to create this ban. If the law officially passes, the only new vehicles sold in Norway would be electric and hydrogen fuel cell cars.

Wind Screens Coming for IndyCars (update)

Of course I was not allowed to take any photos.  What I did see was a single piece unit make of some sort of clear advanced material like on a fighter jet. Horton said PPG was making several prototypes for them and they plan to track test the chosen one later this year with the goal of introducing it for 2017 retrofitted to the existing car.

IndyCar pursuing 3rd engine supplier (Update)
UPDATE Honda HPD boss Art St. Cyr. told AR1's Mark Cipolloni this morning that the current IndyCar engine specifications were written with the goal of attracting Ford into the series. They were surprised when it was Chevy who came onboard instead. Is it now Ford's time? The last Ford in IndyCar was built by Cosworth. Cosworth announced this week that they were opening a plant in Detroit to produce V8 high performance engine parts for an unnamed manufacturer. Chevy sells V8s for the Corvette and Camaro, Dodge sells Hellcat V8s for its Challenger and Charger, and Ford sells V8s for its high performance Mustangs. Putting 2 + 2 together and we get either Dodge or Ford, and we lean toward Dodge since they recently dropped out of NASCAR, with Cosworth doing the engine for them.

05/26/16 It was Indianapolis 500 Media Day on Thursday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and INDYCAR CEO Mark Miles indicated that "at least one" engine manufacturer not involved in the series will be at this year’s Indianapolis 500 and "you can count that we are going to talk to them about joining the series before they leave."

Miles refused to name the engine company.

INDYCAR President of Competition and Operations Jay Frye said he keeps an open dialog with various engine companies and said a search for a third engine supplier remains a priority with the series.

But Joe Gibbs Racing drivers don't have any such worries with recent NASCAR rule tweaks, and those trying to catch them won't go all that far in saying the new rules implemented in the past month will erase the advantage JGR drivers and Kevin Harvick have appeared to have in 2016.

Indy Qualification Schedule
IMS officials here are "hinting" that the top floor of the IMS media center will become upscale hospitality fan suites starting next year. The media center was built to handle the crush of 1990's era media for 3 races, but the number of media has been steadily declining. The media will then be gathered into what is now the photographer's room on the second floor, which has no windows facing the track.

While the thought of having a financially strong IMS is certainly appealing, it will definitely lower the quality of life for the media, some of whom spend weeks here at IMS.

But Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that the problem with that plan could be a lack of spare parts, meaning only one works Renault and one Red Bull gets the upgrade for the streets of the Principality.

For Red Bull, it might be a difficult decision. Does Max Verstappen, F1's new teen winner, get the Tag-Heuer branded upgrade, or should it go to the more experienced Daniel Ricciardo?

Hunter-Reay fastest on Wednesday until Chevy engineers turn up their engines
"I'm just waiting for them to turn the wick up. I'm not sure when that's coming," Ryan Hunter-Reay said
.
"Will (Power) and I are always giving each other jabs, but yeah, I fully expect things to come a little bit more into the norm by the time we get to Friday. You know, some of those Chevys out there look really good in traffic. We felt good, so we'll see. It's early days still. I know better than to start thinking that I have a shot yet."

"The tow is worth about six miles an hour, so it's not really representative," Power said of his 3rd quick 227.77s mph lap.

IndyCar about to make another serious blunder
Jay Frye
Jay Frye
Here we go again. IndyCar wasted tens of millions of dollars on the aero kits to try and open up the competition a bit and what did it get them? An unhappy paddock and TV ratings still in the dumper and races being cancelled due to lack of attendance.

Instead of spending those millions putting all the races on network TV because ratings greater than 1.0 means more sponsorship in the paddock, they opened up the competition and got nothing for it.

And now they are talking about making the same stupid mistake again.

It will be a cold day in hell before German Rosberg leaves the best car in F1 - German Mercedes
Championship leader Nico Rosberg is out of contract at the end of this year, and should he decide to part ways with current employer Mercedes, the German manufacturer could begin courting Fernando Alonso.

Mercedes Chairman Dieter Zetsche said in Barcelona last weekend that both the team's drivers "are under contract for the forthcoming season".

While motorsport boss Toto Wolff expressed his preference with continuing with both Hamilton and Rosberg, he also admitted that the contracts had yet to be finalized.

Graphene secret to Mercedes F1 power
Rumor has it that while the other F1 engine manufacturers are still using Lithium Ion Batteries to store electrical energy that can be used by the MGU-K (electric motor), Mercedes is using Graphene Batteries (Ultracapacitors). As has been talked about on these pages for over a year, the advantage of Graphene Batteries are their ability to recharge over 1,000 times faster than Lithium Ion Batteries and, as any good capacitor can, to discharge energy back into the MGU-K very quickly - much more quickly than a traditional battery can.

Under braking, the MGU-K (electric motor) operates as a generator, recovering some of the kinetic energy dissipated during braking. It converts this into electricity that can be stored in the battery and deployed throughout the lap (limited to 120 kW or 160bhp by the rules). Under acceleration, the MGU-K is powered from the Energy Store (battery) and/or from the MGU-H and acts as a second motor to help propel the car.
