Toyota LMP1 Hybrid
Toyota LMP1 Hybrid

Unable to win the 24 Hours of LeMans when they had to beat either Porsche or Audi, now that they are both gone Toyota Gazoo Racing may extend its FIA World Endurance Championship LMP1 Hybrid program that will see it compete in the 2018/19 WEC "Super Season." It would make Toyota the only manufacturer confirmed to compete with hybrid-powered LMP1 cars, after Porsche announced its withdrawal from the WEC earlier this year and Peugeot actively shelved its endurance racing plans to compete in World Rallycross.

COTA eyes IndyCar race (Update)
Eddie Gossage (L) is going to have a lot to say if IndyCar tries to race at COTA
Eddie Gossage (L) is going to have a lot to say if IndyCar tries to race at COTA

UPDATE  Circuit of The Americas, a nearly 3.5-mile road course near Austin, is interested in hosting a Verizon IndyCar Series race so long as it doesn’t conflict with an existing event. But COTA shouldn’t be concerned that--the race track should, instead, be worried about its 1.5-mile asphalt neighbor up north.

Track president Bobby Epstein said COTA would be interested in IndyCar so long as the track could make it work with a bunch of “calendar limitations,” NBC Sports reports. But people can be quick to forget, as it seems Epstein has been: COTA’s neighbor 230 miles north near Dallas, Texas Motor Speedway, isn’t fond of sharing series with it. Texas Motor Speedway already has an IndyCar race.

(GMM) Daniel Ricciardo could be headed to Mercedes for 2019.

It is believed one of the reasons Red Bull was so keen to extend Max Verstappen's deal through 2020 is that Ricciardo is - in Helmut Marko's words - "on the market" for a new team after his current contract expires late next year.

Ricciardo, 28, is not denying it, although he does play down speculation a move to F1's other top team Ferrari may be likely.

Low TV ratings will cost IndyCar their Series Sponsorship (3rd Update)
Mark Miles
Mark Miles - AR1.com predicted that persistent low TV ratings on NBCSN would eventually drain the IndyCar paddock of all sponsors. Miles and IndyCar now feel the same pain the team owners have been feeling for 9 years of the NBCSN contract

UPDATE Verizon has chosen not to renew its IndyCar entitlement deal that ends after next season, series CEO Mark Miles confirmed on Friday, making the telecom carrier a lame-duck partner for '18. Verizon’s deal is worth around $10M annually and started in ’14 after it replaced apparel company Izod. Miles had previously said that a renewal with Verizon was unlikely, but today marks the first time IndyCar is confirming that Verizon did not renew. The company is expected to stay in the sport via its team relationship with Team Penske, with whom its had a relationship for nearly a decade.

Miles said that IndyCar will immediately start searching for a partner, and will use the opportunity to try to package the entitlement rights as part of a larger buy with a brand who also wants to advertise heavily with its next media-rights partner. IndyCar’s media rights also expire after '18 and it is currently in talks with incumbents ESPN and NBC Sports, as well as other media companies. Miles expects to have the deal for U.S. media rights wrapped up by the end of this year.

Hanoi

UPDATE We are upgrading this rumor to 'strong' today as AR1.com inside sources tell us the deal is almost done that will see an F1 race on the streets of the Vietnam capital of Hanoi.

10/06/17  Formula 1 bosses are in talks with officials in Vietnam about holding a race in the future reports Autosport.

Earlier this year, former F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone said he could have done a deal with Vietnam but turned the chance down as he felt there were enough races in Asia.

Electric motors are far simpler than an ICE. Plus no radiator, exhaust system, oil, fuel tank, catalytic converter, etc. Over time electric cars will be far less expensive to manufacture. Robots will also cost jobs.

Following Ford's announcement that it would shift more resources to electric cars, the United Auto Workers has begun talks with the automaker about the potential impact of more electric-car production on jobs.

On Tuesday, Ford announced that it would cut spending by $14 billion, as well as move investments away from internal-combustion powertrains and sedans to focus on trucks and hybrid and all-electric powertrains. The UAW is looking into whether that shift will put jobs at risk.

"We've been doing our due diligence to find out how much it [electrification] means to us," UAW vice president Jimmy Settles, who also heads the union's Ford division, said in an interview with Automotive News. "We put them on notice early that we want to be part of the process."

Palmer eyeing 'long term' IndyCar switch for 2018 (Update)
Palmer won the 2014 GP2 (now F2) title
Palmer won the 2014 GP2 (now F2) title

UPDATE Palmer looks washed up and out of his depth in F1 right now. Which is unfair to a driver with a GP2 championship - F1’s feeder series - on his resume. Like Rossi and Chilton before him Palmer is just another on the long list of talented drivers chewed up and spat out by F1 because in F1 you must buy your ride, and if you can't, you're out.  You have to buy your ride in IndyCar too, but at about 1/20th the cost.

Which is part of the reason why a move to IndyCar could work.

Palmer is a good racer. Winning in GP2 let alone taking the championship is not the mark of a journeyman racer. Past champions include no less than Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton and Hulkenberg.

Trump to bring down Ford (Update)

The Ford Foundation, although founded by members of the Ford Family, years ago veered far away from its founding intent. No current Motor Company family members or leaders serve on the board or seem to have been involved in some time. In fact, Henry Ford II is famous for publicly resigning in protest from his own board because it had already began shifting significantly - in 1977!
