Motegi race could be cancelledUPDATE IndyCar is in limbo with the September race at the earthquake-damaged Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan for multiple reasons.
In addition to the obvious radiation concerns -- the track is about 80 miles from the compromised Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant -- there was a sizable asphalt shift between the third and fourth turns of the oval track.
Initial repairs were made, but former IndyCar driver Hideki Mutoh said it will be difficult for IndyCar to race on it.
"He said it was way too bumpy right now for a single seater," Cotman said.
IndyCar has been asked to consider racing on Motegi's road course, but that circuit is borderline too narrow, having been built for motorcycles. Plus, road course equipment is heavier and thus more expensive to ship.
Series officials are expected to make a feasibility visit after the 500. The race that is to be IndyCar's last there is Sept. 17.
Rumors circulated about using the IMS road course as a replacement, but Jeff Belskus, the track's CEO, said that's not being considered. Indy Star
03/11/11 There is a lot of speculation in the paddock as to whether the Japan Motegi race will happen given the earthquake, Tsunami and nuclear reactor leak. Randy Bernard said that will be the call of the race promoter.
