British Formula One star Lewis Hamilton may be heading to New Zealand. Hamilton, 23, the runner-up in last year's F1 championship, is one of the world's biggest sporting stars and recently moved from Britain to Switzerland, to escape the media spotlight.
Several New Zealand motor-racing sources told the Sunday Star-Times that rumors about Hamilton heading here this summer had circulated for months.
"I understand he is coming for a couple of weeks within the next month. He is apparently coming with a friend on a private visit. I was told about it before Christmas," one said.
Another source told the Star-Times Hamilton would be visiting a Kiwi friend, also involved in motorsport, but declined to say more.
"From what I hear, he is just coming for some time out.
"The Australian GP is in March, but I don't think it has anything to do with that."
The New Zealand leg of the A1GP championship is in Taupo next weekend.
New Zealand A1GP team owner Colin Giltrap said he had not heard anything about Hamilton.
"Jackie Stewart [a former F1 world champion who is now an outspoken commentator] is here soon for his book launch and he is having a cocktail party. It would be pretty hush-hush if Hamilton was coming here.
"Scott Dixon [Kiwi IndyCar racer] was here last week, but he had to go back to the United States." Sun.co.nz
