Speed limits to be axed on the Nurburgring in April

Last year during the VLN Endurance Championship Nurburgring an accident led to the death of one spectator after Jann Mardenborough’s Nissan GT-R lost control, flipped over a fence and crashed into the crowd of onlookers.

Thus the famed circuit decided to make some modifications to the course and also impose speed limits on three different sections of the Nordschleife. The company in charge of administering the circuit also came up with a safety improvement plan that resulted in the installation of new retaining fences and a number of track improvements to eliminate bumps in the road surface. The strategy also includes a new spectator-restricted zone which is expected to help prevent additional injuries or death among fans.

Now there’s a report that claims the speed limits will be lifted when the VLN Endurance Championship Nurburgring returns on April 2 as the track received two new licenses from the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the German motor sport association (DMSB). “With these safety measures and the two new licenses we have created the prerequisites for an exciting racing season that will hopefully see no accidents, and we are glad that the speed limits are finally a thing of the past," commented in a statement the leading Nurburgring event management team.
