Dale Earnhardt Jr. Wins Coke Zero 400 at Daytona

Dale Earnhardt Jr. scored a commanding victory in the rain-delayed Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway by leading 96 of 161 laps in his No. 88 Nationwide Stars and Stripes Chevrolet SS enroute to his 25th Cup career victory. It was his second win of the season, and vaulted him to second place in the point standings.

“Dale Earnhardt Jr. was dominant from practice through the last lap of the race," said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President Performance Vehicles & Motorsports. “Congratulations to Dale Jr., Greg Ives, and the No. 88 Nationwide Stars and Stripes Chevy SS team on their second win of the season."

Jimmie Johnson powered his No. 48 Lowe’s Patriotic Chevrolet SS to the runner-up spot in the 400-mile event, giving Hendrick Motorsports one-two finish on the high banks of Daytona.

The race ended at 2:41 a.m. ET and concluded with a large crash featuring Austin Dillon's No. 3 Chevrolet going airborne and smashing into the catch-fence near Turn 1 after he crossed the start-finish line. Dillon walked away from the wreck, the fourth major crash of the night. After being released from the infield care center, Dillon said he suffered a bruised tailbone and forearm.

“I had a lot of fun tonight," a somewhat subdued Earnhardt said after the race. “We have such great motors and good cars. We ran Very fast. I had to block a lot, get a lot of pushes from everybody. I had to run real hard to win this race here. We got shuffled back a few times."

Driver Paul Menard could have been speaking for everyone at the speedway when he said on his radio during the race that Earnhardt’s No. 88 was “ridiculously" fast. Earnhardt consistently outran the competition on re-start after re-start. Did he get 'the call.'

Earnhardt’s crew raced onto the track after the last-lap crash to check on Dillon’s condition. The catch fences at Daytona International Speedway were reinforced following an accident in 2013 during a NASCAR XFINITY Series race.

Team Chevy took seven of the top eight in the final finishing order: Kevin Harvick brought his No. 4 Jimmy John’s/Budweiser Chevrolet SS home in fourth place, extending his top five finishing record in 2015 to 12 in 17 starts. Harvick’s Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kurt Busch made a valiant charge to the front in the waning laps to come home in fifth position in his No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet SS.

Jeff Gordon finished sixth in his No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet SS in his final race at Daytona. Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevy SS went airborne and hit the track catchfence in a violent last lap multi-car crash. Dillon was unhurt and was scored in the seventh position.

“It was great to have seven Chevrolet SS drivers finish within the Top 8 at Daytona," added Campbell. “More importantly, I am thankful that no drivers or fans were seriously injured in the race."

Denny Hamlin (Toyota) finished third to round out the top five finishers.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule moves to Kentucky Speedway Saturday night July 11.

YOUR FIRST REACTION WASN’T ‘HEY WE WON’ YOU WERE WORRIED ABOUT AUSTIN DILLON AND EVERYONE ELSE: “Yeah that scared the hell out of me, I will be honest with you. I saw the whole thing happen. You are looking in the mirror the whole last lap. I saw Denny (Hamlin) get turned. I guess that is kind of how it started. That was terrifying to watch. You know a wreck like that has such a high potential for someone to get injured and you saw the car get high and get into the fence. You just worry about everybody else in the grandstands and all that stuff. You just don’t want to see that happen. It was touch and go there for several moments. I’m more thankful that everybody is okay than to be standing here in Victory Lane that is for sure."

THE CAR LOOKED SO DOMINATE, ESPECIALLY ON RESTARTS HOW KEY WAS THAT THIS EVENING? “Just great motors, the guys in the engine shops do such a good job so got to thank all those guys. My 88 boys, all the guys back at the shop they put together such good cars. This car is the one we won Talladega with. It’s going to get retired one of these days, hopefully we get to keep using it. Hopefully we get to keep using it, hopefully the boss man doesn’t put it in the barn yet. I want to thank Nationwide, Diet Mountain Dew, Kelley Blue Book, Chevrolet, Sprint and Microsoft, one of our new partners for everything they do. I had a lot of fun tonight. You hate to see that kind of a wreck at the end. You don’t want to see anybody be put in danger like that. I’m just so thankful that all the drivers are okay. It shook us up pretty good. We got down there at the end of pit road and Jimmie (Johnson) came up to me and the first thing he said was how wild was that and how scary was that. We weren’t even really shaking hands about the win or nothing. You just hate to see that. Just so thankful that nobody is hurt, very close call there."

THE VIBRATION ON THAT LAST RUN, HOW WORRIED WERE YOU?

“When you are really running good you start to hear all the noises and everything that the car is probably already making you just don’t really pay attention to them. We had a right-rear tire going flat on the first run of the day. I was getting tight. The air pressure coming out of the right-rear was making the car tight. I didn’t really have a vibration, but we were thinking we just needed to work on the balance of the car, but it was weird to be tight leading the race. So, to find out the right-rear tire was going down that was a bit of a blessing in disguise. We didn’t work on the balance of the car too much. We put tires on it and it started driving great. The No. 10 car (Danica Patrick) hit the wall over there. We drove through it under caution, the first car through it and I had a vibration immediately after that restart and was real tight. I thought, well, it feels just like that right-rear tire going down again. I was just ready for it. I wanted to run the wall in case it did blow out I wouldn’t have far to go before I hit anything. But all those guys were getting racy so we had to start protecting the bottom some. Apparently it was just a gremlin, but the car was a little bit tight on the balance side. Leading it just shouldn’t be that way, so that was an abnormal thing. But still very fast, I had to block a lot, but I had to pick my lanes and get pushes from the guys that were coming. I did what I had to do. I raced everybody real hard. You’ve got to run real hard and defend every single position, whether it’s a teammate or anybody, best friends out there, you’ve got to run them all real hard to win these things here."

ON THE WIN

"The guys that deserve all the credit are standing here in Victory Lane with me. The engine guys back at the shop. They do such an awesome job building the motors for these cars. We have the best engines in this sport; we have had for years. My guys in the 48/88 shop put together such a great car. This is my Talladega car. I knew it had good potential. I just wanted to be on the inside. I think a lot of Denny's (Hamlin) restrictor plate skill, so I felt like he was a good guy to be in front of. It just didn't make any sense to me to pick an outside lane with so few laps to go. It just seems like you are giving a big opportunity to that inside lane. So if I could make it work, I wanted to do it on the bottom. Denny's good at these plate tracks and he gave me a good push out there to get me in the lead there. So that worked out for me. The No. 4 (Kevin Harvick) was behind him and giving him some opportunities to get to us. We pulled in front of all the lanes that were coming to keep our car's momentum up. I kept getting the shoves from the guys that were coming and it worked out okay.

"Just hate to see what we saw there. Man, that scared the hell out of everybody including us. I saw it all in the mirrors, it was very frightening. Really glad everybody is okay. Hate to see the race end that way.

WHAT GAVE YOU THE EXTRA TO WIN OVER JIMMIE JOHNSON?

"Just the power in this car and the ability this car has to pass. We got shuffled back a few times and it is all race car when you are trying to get back up there. It you know where to put it, it will go and get to where you want to go, and I made some good choices But the car has to be able to make that happen, and if it can't, it isn't going to go anywhere. Lot of good race car power, Hendrick power and these guys standing here that put it together. It is just amazing. It is such a treat. I've been real lucky. But I've been in such good equipment at Daytona and Talladega pretty much all of my career. It's been an amazing ride."

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 BASS PRO SHOPS CHEVROLET SS – Involved in severe multi-car accident on final lap. Finished 7th:

I DON’T THINK I HAVE SEEN MORE HAPPY PEOPLE AFTER A CRASH, HOW ARE YOU?

“I am just going to be really sore. It got my tailbone pretty good and my arm. Should be fine, just go ice it up and get ready for Kentucky. But just thank the good Lord for taking care of me and for what NASCAR has done to make the sport this much safer. I just hope everybody in the stands is all right. That is the next biggest concern. Just praying for everybody and glad the good Lord looked out for me tonight."

WHAT HAPPENED?

“You know the 11 got turned by the 4 across the start/finish line and I thought the race was going to be over right there. We were almost there and I was just pushing the 24 and the next thing I knew was that I was looking at my roof for a long time. I thought it was all over when I was sliding there and the 2 came in and really got me. So it was a wicked ride but thank the good Lord above for taking care of me."

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS AS YOU LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW AND SAW YOU WERE SURROUNDED BY CREW MEMBERS TRYING TO HELP?

“I thought that was pretty awesome. As soon as I looked up and I don’t know if it was Casey Mears pit crew member or Casey right at the door, but that made me feel really good and comfortable. The only thing I was worried about was that there was oil everywhere and I wanted to get away from the car and that was why I was scrambling to get out from under it. And then just wanted to waive to the fans and let them know I was all good."

THE CATCHFENCE. IT WILL BE A TOPIC OF CONVERSATION. IT KEPT YOU IN THE BALLPARK SO TO SPEAK, BUT DID IT DO ITS JOB?

“I don’t know because I haven’t even looked at the replay yet and I don’t know when I am going to. But I just think the next thing is that we are going to have to make this racing even more safe. We are running 200 mph and pushing each other around out there and it’s just bound to happen. No matter how safe we can make the sport, when you are going that amount of speed, things happen."

JEFF GORDON SAID THIS STYLE OF RACING IS MORE LIKE A VIDEO GAME, BUT IN REAL LIFE. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU SAW THERE IN THE END?

“It definitely is a video game. With three to go you are just going to push somebody until the end of the race. It’s wreckers or checkers. It’s like Talladega Nights out there. So it takes a lot of confidence and just staying into the gas is tough. It is a tough sport and it’s what racing is about and it is why NASCAR has been here for so long."

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S PATRIOTIC CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 2ND

WHAT DID YOU SEE FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE?

“It’s a part of our sport. It was real interesting to watch the playback and see how the No. 3 (Austin Dillon) I just thought he was backwards and that is why the car took off. To see the replay there and to see there was contact with the front of the No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) car and that sent it in the air. The fact the car just climbed altitude like it did, and went in the fence I’ve never seen anything like that. Then house fast it stopped. I’m happy to know that Austin is okay and certainly hope the fans are. Just a scary moment. I saw it all take place in the mirror. It hit me hard. I thought something really bad happened."

YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FINISH HERE AT DAYTONA: "I just hope everybody is okay. Man, that was a massive, massive wreck. Happy to hear that Austin (Dillon) is okay. I've never seen a car stop that fast. It was just incredible what took place out there. And how he got airborne, too. Typically you see a car go backwards and get airborne. He just had a little contact on the left front, and got air under him and the thing took off like an airplane. I am glad Austin is okay. I'm just hoping that the fans are okay. It was a frightening moment. I saw it in the mirror and I didn't know what to think. It was just a frightening thing to see. Certainly hope everybody is okay."

[adinserter name="GOOGLE AD"]IS THAT THE TYPE OF RACING YOU EXPECTED? "Passing for the lead was tough. You could pass and get to second with ease to a certain degree if you were doing things right. But, passing for the lead was the hardest thing to get done. You put Dale, Jr. at the front of this thing with how good a driver he is and how he works the draft, you aren't going to get by. Congrats to him. Looks like we had a one-two for the shop and I know that is a proud moment. I'm sure there will be a party until mid-day tomorrow at Junior's house."

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 JIMMY JOHN’S/BUDWEISER CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 4TH

WHAT DID YOU SEE COMING TO THE FINISH? “Just a lot of pushing and shoving. Just got to thank everybody on my Jimmy John’s team first. I caught the No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) there and he had a big piece of damage on the left-rear, but at that point you couldn’t run off and I finally just snagged him and turned him as he was in the middle of the track. I hate that all happened, but just at the end of the race it becomes pretty aggressive."

HOW WAS THE RACE AS IT WENT ON? “At the end it always ratchets up into being more aggressive. I think as you get towards the end there is a lot of take and you have to push and you have to shove and you have to stay in the gas. You hate to see it all wind up like that, but that is going to happen."

KURT BUSCH, NO. 41 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 5TH

ON HIS NIGHT: “An incredible run. The way the teams put all the effort into restrictor plate racing it comes down to the crazy finishes and all-in-all we finished fifth with the Haas Automation Chevrolet. Thanks to all of our sponsors Monster Energy, Chevrolet, State Water Heaters, Mobil 1, Rush Truck Centers, everybody puts in a huge effort for these restrictor plate races. You hope to you get to the final caution and you can make a run to the green. It was a difficult finish that is all I can say."

SCARY INCIDENT AT THE END:

“Yeah, it would be cool to see what we could do unrestricted. Let’s go 230 mph. I guarantee we will all be spread out and put on a good show still."

JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 6TH

DESCRIBE WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN WATCHING HERE: “Oh my gosh chaos it’s crazy. I’m so glad Austin Dillon is okay. That is a violent wreck and I hope the fans are okay as well. That was a crazy one. You knew it was going to be crazy. Right from the start I thought it was a wild race. A lot of action and crazy stuff going on. Our Axalta Chevrolet was excellent. It was so good. A couple of moves here and there, it’s so hard to predict these races and what line to be in. One time we came up the middle I thought that was the place to be and Trevor Bayne got to the outside of me and that lane was going. That is all it takes, just that little split second decision and one move to go your way or not go your way and we kind of got shuffled back. But making pretty good ground there behind (Kevin) Harvick. We were pushing like crazy, just wide open. It is literally like a video game out there these days, except for its real life. It’s crazy. It’s really crazy. I love Daytona. This place has been amazing for me. I can’t believe this is my final race here, but after going through that experience I’m glad I only have one more restrictor plate race left."

WHAT HAPPENED FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE? "On that final lap…that is why we love our fans. They came here to see some crazy wild stuff and we are going to give it to them. I'll tell you, on that last lap, nobody is lifting…there is nobody letting out of the gas. Unfortunately, this is the result of it. I hope everybody is okay. That is a scary, scary accident. I have (Kevin) Harvick ahead of me. I had the No. 3 (Austin Dillon) behind me. I saw the No. 11 (Denny Hamlin) get turned right as we got to the start/finish line. Then I got into the back of the No. 4 (Harvick), he turned. Then somebody got in the back of me and I turned. It just created chaos. This is the best finish I've had here in a long time, so I'll take it, but I just hate to see it finish that way."

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 31 GRAINGER CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 8TH

"This is the kind of race that can make or break your season and fortunately for us, we ran the kind of race we strategized for and made it through with no drama. We needed this points day with the way the standings are and I am very happy to see everything is OK with Austin."

CASEY MEARS, NO. 13 GEICO CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 11TH

“The car was pretty fast. We had a sensor issue. Every time I touched the brakes there when I was on the gas it would kill the motor. You have to do that a lot here. You are managing the brake and the throttle a lot in the middle of the pack. It happened to us, the motor died running about fifth or sixth there. It was a little bit scary. I was hoping everybody was going to dodge me when the motor died. The guys did a good job hopping through the window and setting the sensor and getting rid of that issue. We were fortunate that a caution fell to where we didn’t go a lap down. It put us right back in the mix. We were able to get to the front pretty quickly when it was time to go. There at the end we were sitting in a really good position. I was behind the No. 41 (Kurt Busch) pushing him pretty good. We had kind of talked. I thought the No. 31 (Ryan Newman) might go with me. I went up a little high and he didn’t go, but that happens it is the way these races go. I think after all the carnage and everything that happened it would have been nice to be inside the top 10 or a little closer, but it’s a good day. A lot of guys had bad days here."

LANDON CASSILL, NO. 40 SNAP FITNESS CHEVROLET SS – FINISHED 13TH

“It was unbelievable. It’s just really tight racing. You just can’t drive over the left-rear of people. They wreck every time. That is what happens. I’m just so proud of my Hillman Racing team. My Snap Fitness Chevy, we are so fast on these superspeedways and we can run up front and we have proven it. I’m proud of our finish. These guys are just going to have to build another car and we will go to Talladega and be even faster."

BRIAN SCOTT, NO. 33 SHORE LODGE CHEVROLET SS – INVOLVED IN A MULTI-CAR ACCIDENT ON LAP 86

WHAT HAPPENED?

“Daytona happened. The field was coming up to pass a lap down car and it looked like the No. 42 (Kyle Larson) got loose going around it getting in the middle, which happens with these Sprint Cup cars. They are so aero sensitive on the side. Then from there it was Daytona. They were wrecking. My spotter was doing a great job telling me where things were and it was one of those where we needed to gas up to get by cars that were sliding up. As soon as we got past those Carl (Edwards) came up and we ran into the back of him. It looked like he got jacked up on the windshield and then we were tore up. Our car wasn’t going to run to the end. It sounded like it maybe caught fire for a second. But the bottom line is just a bad end to an already long weekend. Not the way we wanted to end with our Shore Lodge Chevy SS. I felt like we had a car that was capable of running up there in the top 10; top five early on. I felt like we could get back up there. Just trying to learn in the draft and be ready for the end, but the end came too soon."

KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 COCA-COLA CHEVROLET SS – Involved in a multi-car crash on lap 105

WHAT HAPPENED FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE? “The first time we caught the lapper and he was on the bottom and I just got to the middle at the wrong time. When we turned off into the corner I got really loose and was able to save it. I had a little bit of damage there and lost a lap. Then in the second one the No. 43 (Aric Almirola) comes across. I think I just got on the brakes and it got me sideways. I was along for the ride from there. I hate it because this was probably the best I’ve ran throughout a whole race or most of the race here at Daytona. The Share a Coke Chevy was fast. I had a lot of fun running up front and kind of being somewhat aggressive. I spun the first time and then that kind of put us in a bad spot there to get in that last wreck."

DID YOU FEEL THE SENSE OF URGENCY STARTING TO PICK UP OUT ON THE TRACK? “From what I could tell being back in the pack there racing for the Lucky Dog it seemed like they were shuffling around a little bit more up front. I think the race is about to get a little more interesting and probably see some more carnage. We have already seen quite a bit so far tonight."

WHAT HAPPENED? "On that last one, I saw a couple of cars get turned, and I was able to clear most of it. Then, the No. 43 (Aric Almirola) was sideways in front of me, and I think I got on the brakes a little bit and it got me sideways. From there I couldn't control it and I hit the inside wall and ended our day. Disappointing because that is probably the best I've felt at Daytona. I ran up in the top five to eight most of the race, then I got sideways there passing a lapper that was off the pace. I kind of got stuck in the middle lane and spun myself earlier and kind of put us in that hole. Kind of frustrated with myself because I don't know if I held a steady wheel the first time when I spun but, I don't know, disappointed."

MARTIN TRUEX, JR., NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW/DENVER MATTRESS CHEVROLET SS – Involved in multi car accident on lap 105

WHAT HAPPENED? “I’m not sure. I saw the replay there. It looked like the No. 5 (Kasey Kahne) and No. 20 (Matt Kenseth) got together somehow. Just another situation where we were kind of running outside there minding our own business and just like practice, just got caught up in somebody else’s wreck. It’s unfortunate, but that is the way this place is. I don’t know that I’ve finished a race here in July in quite a while. But we had a great car. We didn’t have quite the speed of a few of those guys, but we had a great handling racecar. On the longer runs we could really make some moves."

WHAT DID YOU SEE?

“Some guys just got together up ahead, just slowed up in front of us and we had nowhere to go. It’s just one of those deals here you know. This is the second car here this weekend for us and we were just out there, minding our own business. It’s definitely tough but that is just how plate racing goes. I was just talking to NBC there and I don’t know if I have finished at one of these July races in a long time. We have had some crummy luck here for sure."
