New Sochi F1 circuit may also host top motorbike events

Russia's first Formula One circuit in Sochi could also host MotoGP and Superbikes races.

The circuit, given heavy financial backing by Vladimir Putin's Russian government, is currently being built and is scheduled to host its first F1 race in 2014.

Sochi, a popular resort on the Black Sea, will also host the next Winter Olympics and track chief Alexander Bogdanov says his venue could also be used for bikes.

"The construction of the racing track in Sochi is going into high gear," he said.

"The 5854 m long circuit is one of the longest in the Formula 1 world championship.

"The autodrome will also host different racing series such as the FIA GT World Series, FIA WEC, WTCC, Formula 3, and Russian national championships.

"We are working through the possibility of hosting motorcycle racing at the highest level: Moto GP, World Superbike, and others."

Circuit architect Hermann Tilke, who is in charge of building the Sochi circuit, sees no problem making the necessary alterations for bikes.

"There is no doubt that the circuit will be meeting all the requirements for Formula 1 and maybe also for the Moto GP," he said. Sky Sports
