Already signed on for Max Mosley's lower-cost future, the Austrian billionaire was thought keen on bringing Volkswagen into the paddock.
The customer engine contracts with Ferrari (Red Bull) and Cosworth (Toro Rosso) run to the end of 2007.
''Cooperating with a manufacturer would be good,'' Mateschitz told Motorsport Aktuell, ''but in 2008, 2009 and 2010 it will be less important than in the past.''
He is no doubt also referring to the FIA's current plan to 'freeze' engine development.
'Didi' added: ''So it will not be so crucial (in the future) as to whether you can win that you get your engine through a partnership, rather than simply buying (one).''
He added that Volkswagen and Audi are unlikely to get involved in F1 any time soon.
