Legge to boost race attendance

New Grand Prix of Denver general manager Rob Johnson is betting Katherine Legge will be to the Champ Car World Series what Danica Patrick is to the rival Indy Racing League.

Johnson, former president of the defunct Pikes Peak International Raceway, is six months removed from the hype surrounding Patrick's first IRL race at the 1-mile oval in Fountain.

Johnson expects the same attention when Legge, who will make her Champ Car debut April 9 at the Long Beach Grand Prix, makes her first start at the Grand Prix of Denver on Aug. 13.

"It's great for the sport to have competitive female drivers, and with Danica, she gave us a ton more awareness for our event," Johnson said. "We had people who knew about our event that never knew anything about us before Danica. She was definitely good for the IRL and I think Katherine – assuming she's going to be competitive, and what I'm hearing is that she will be – she'll be great for Champ Car." More at Denver Post
