F1 peace could be declared in Malaysia

(GMMf1NET) F1 is now 'close' to declaring an end to the war that once threatened to tear the pinnacle of racing apart.

That is the revelation of FIA president Max Mosley, who attended the Bahrain opener for key talks with the carmakers' 'GPMA' group.

Although a meeting on Saturday night failed to see the now highly anticipated 'memorandum of understanding' signed, the Briton says all parties now agree that cost cutting is a must for F1's future beyond '08.

''(An agreement is) much closer than I thought (it) would be,'' Mr. Mosley told ITV.

''Now they're all talking about getting the costs down (and) now the argument (is) how, and that's much easier.''

Mosley suggested that a final agreement could be just weeks away and 'maybe earlier than that'.

Indeed, a source within the 'GPMA' camp confirmed that changes would now be made to the rejected draft memorandum of understanding ahead of a new meeting in Malaysia.
