20 race calendar possible

The possibility of an even longer formula one calendar for the 2006 season is still very real.

And, despite widespread disapproval of Bernie Ecclestone's desire to expand the record-setting '05 schedule to 20 grands prix next year, Ferrari boss Jean Todt hinted that another unprecedented calendar is feasible.

''Ideally, we would like 17, 18 grands prix,'' said the Frenchman. ''I think we are privileged to be in the F1 business, so to do 18, 19, 20 grands prix – even though it is demanding – would remain acceptable.''

Obviously, the very tired faces in the Shanghai paddock – not to mention strained relationships – are multiple reasons for not wanting a long calendar.

But there is also a financial issue — more races does not equal more money for the F1 teams.

McLaren's Ron Dennis said: ''Working hard is part of Formula One, but I think there is a point at which you say 'you're asking too much'. We're very close to that point.''
