IRL race at The Glen to move

The Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix presented by Argent Mortgage, which makes its much-anticipated debut at the Glen on Sept. 25, will move to a new date in 2006. Indy Racing League spokesman John Griffin said when the series schedule is released sometime after Labor Day, the Glen race will probably occupy a midseason date.

"You are going to see a schedule starting three or four weeks later and ending three or four weeks earlier than you have seen in the last couple of years," Griffin said Wednesday. "In all likelihood, Watkins Glen would move off the tail end of the schedule. We're looking somewhere in the heart of the schedule."

Griffin said the IRL is condensing its 2006 schedule into an April to mid-September time frame to better promote the series and to avoid overlapping with the NFL.

"It's designed to build momentum for television viewership and momentum as we move from track to track on the schedule," he said. "The NFL was certainly an issue, also."

He said the IRL plans to race on a near weekly basis next year after this year's schedule had several gaps in it between events. More at The Star Gazette
