The Tesla Model 3 has no key

There’s no traditional key for the new Tesla Model 3; instead the new electric sedan will use the owner’s smartphone to open and start over Bluetooth.

The Tesla Model 3 will detect the paired smartphone and automatically unlock itself and get ready to go.

In the very likely event of the battery on your phone running flat, you won’t be left stranded outside your car as Tesla will also provide an NFC key card which is thin enough to keep in a wallet.

Yes, it’s the same key card that was spotted on a video days before the official reveal event but unlike previous iterations, the Model 3’s key card will have a pure backup role.

Using the card to unlock the Model 3 requires pressing it against the B-pillar and placing it on a designated spot between the seats to start it. The NFC key card is also designed for valet use.
