Kanaan, da Matta eye move to A1 GP

UPDATE The new A1GP series could land its first star signing if Team Brazil is able to confirm reigning Indy Racing League champion Tony Kanaan as its driver. The Andretti Green man is set to test Brazil’s Lola-Zytek later this month at the Paul Ricard circuit in France. According to team manager Emerson Fittipaldi, the only thing stopping TK from securing the ride is whether AGR can release him.

"I'm looking for Tony to be the standard driver for the team. He wants to do it [and] is already committed, but we need a release from Michael [Andretti]," Emmo told Autosport-Atlas. Another issue is the fact A1’s season debut, at Brands Hatch on September 12, coincides with the IRL’s Chicagoland race. More at SPEEDTV.com

07/30/05 We hear from Brazil that some of the biggest names in the sport are fighting over who will be Brazil's driver in the new A1 Grand Prix series. The word is that Champ Car driver Cristiano da Matta is one of those involved, along with Indy Racing League champion Tony Kanaan and F1 test driver Antonio Pizzonia. Moving to A1 Grand Prix would mean that each of the three would have to give up their current roles. This is most interesting in the case of Kanaan who apparently has had enough of racing on ovals and wants to do more road courses. Grandprix.com
